YOU DON’T “GO” TO MT FUJI, YOU “GO SOMEWHERE TO TAKE IN MT FUJI”

YOU DON’T “GO” TO MT FUJI, YOU “GO SOMEWHERE TO TAKE IN MT FUJI”

I’m writing this blog post on visiting Mt Fuji as I get so so messages from people saying that they want to go to Mt Fuji or stay at Mt Fuji.
However, what everyone is forgetting is that it is all about those magical Mt Fuji views – so, unless you are physically climbing Fuji, you want to visit one of the most popular spots to take in Mt Fuji in all her glory.  So one doesn’t simply “go to Fuji” or “stay at Fuji” (unless your hotel is literally perched on the volcano itself….)

The most popular spots for Mt Fuji views are Kawaguchiko (also called Lake Kawaguchi), Fujiyoshida and Hakone.   So these places are a great place to start looking for directions to (or tour options) AND a great place to start looking for accommodation.

I believe that, time and budget allowing, it is worth staying 2-3 nights in one of these areas to really make the most of your travels.  Also, if you are unlucky enough to be visiting on a cloudy day – your chance of Mt Fuji views goes up and up !

Here are some other great ways to take in Mt Fuji while travelling in Japan.

The Komagatake Ropeway, Hakone
I’ve written about this boat trip across Lake Ashi and the ropeway trip here (It’s a great trip for young families too.) Not that this picture was not taken in Winter. It’s cold and snowy up there for a lot of the year.

Please note that Grinpa closed down for the year in October 2023 and will reopen for Spring in 2024

See here for a full list of places to visit with kids that also have a fantastic view of Mt Fuji.
If you will be climbing Mt Fuji, have a  read of this blog post by Lena Voth who has climbed Fuji more than 4 times.
