Sumida Park ( Whale Playground)
Another park worth wandering too if you’re in Asakusa with kids is the playground in Sumida Park – just by the river.
A lovely friend told me about this one and it is a true gem – and only 7 minutes walk from Sensoji Temple.
This playground is also just one train station from Tokyo Skytree ( you call also go there by foot as it’s approx 14 mins walk or 8 mins, approx 800 yen in a cab)
There is a Tully’s and a little cafe just next to the playground too.
SUMIDA PARK PLAYGROUND
台東区花川戸2-1
2-1 HANAKAWADO, TAITO-KU
2 mins walk away – A small suburban park that allows kids to play ball games like catch or soccer
If you’ve been in Japan for a hot second you’ll know that the ability to play ball games in public parks is quite limited. This small suburban playground, however, does allow kids to kick a ball or play catch etc. It’s not a particularly beautiful park but it is 5 mins walk from Asakusa Station, 3 mins walk from the store Tokyo Kimono Shoes.
There are public restrooms here as well as a climbing structure for kids – built around a tree.
HANAKAWADO PARK (NORTH SIDE)
台東区花川戸2-4-15
2-4-15 HANAKAWADO, TAITO-KU
Just 2 mins walk from the Sumida Park Playground is a store called Tokyo Kimono Shoes. They make sneakers from upcycled kimono and you can choose which fabric etc too. Open Tues-Fri 10:30am-6pm & Sat – Mon 11am-6pm.
If you like retro playgrounds like this I think you’ll love my full Tokyo list here.
