TEAM LAB PLANETS: WHAT’S CLOSE BY FOR KIDS?

TEAM LAB PLANETS: WHAT’S CLOSE BY FOR KIDS?

Team Lab Planets is a fabulous activity for those with or without kids HOWEVER many people are surprised to see that it is a couple of train changes out of the centre of Tokyo.
So I’m often asked what to do before or after their booked Team Lab Planets session.

Please note that Team Lab Planets opened a new section Jan 22, 2025.
The new areas are “Catching and Collecting Forest” and “Athletics Forest.” Both are stunning and both are so interactive and great for kids.
See footage of the new Team Lab Planets sections here.

Please also note that, if you are running late for our timeslot for Team Lab Planets, you can still enter later on that same day (however, you cannot enter earlier than your time on your ticket.)

A few Aussie readers have told me that they have had issues booking Team Lab Planets directly from the official website with their credit cards. If you have no other credit cards to use, I can also recommend booking Team Lab Planets via Klook here.   Please note that this is an affiliate link (this means that I make a small commission if you make a purchase -at no additional cost to you.)

Vegan Ramen within Team Lab Planets:
I must admit that I didn’t love this ramen here (but many first timers to Japan really do – especially as you get to eat the ramen while the team lab images swirl around you. ) but I will always encourage more vegan options around Japan.  Please note that you need to reserve this restaurant in advance. It is no longer accessible to the general public. If you would like to eat here you will need to go and get a timed ticket.  Current information on the UZU Vegan Ramen at Team Lab Planets here.

Closest options for food and shopping near Team Lab Planets (less than 5 mins walk):
LalaPort Shopping Mall  (less than 5 mins walk from Team Lab Planets)
This mall has multiple floors with multiple sections including two full top floors of restaurants, a cinema, a game arcade and Japanese brands and international brands like GAP and Zara.
There are also two Starbucks options within Lalaport.
Vegan options at Japanese Starbucks include:
(Always need to double check in case they have changed the recipe at all, of course)
-the Sugar Donut
-the Mushroom Keema Curry Hot Tortilla
-the Banana Rice Flour Muffin
-the Blueberry Bagel Sandwich

Her favourite at Japanese Starbucks – a mango frappuccino at the Starbucks at Lalaport Toyosu.

Within the complex, my kids love Aloha Table the most.  This is a fabulous family-friendly option for lunch or dinner. My two love the kids’ menu – mostly the pancakes with the chocolate pen for decorating.  All kids’ meals come with a small toy and, if it’s your birthday, the staff will come out and sing. Aloha Table is in an annex section (on the ground floor of the LaLaport Toyosu 3 building) of the department store.  To get there easily from the main section of the shopping mall, walk to  Zara on the 2nd floor of the main building, use the undercover walkway and then walk through the bookshop to the downward escalators to the ground floor.
This restaurant accepts most major credit cards, is entirely non-smoking and also has outdoor seating. They also have space for strollers. It is possible to make a reservation but we have always just walked in.
The full Aloha Table menu is here.

Within the same shopping complex, you will also find a Bubba Gump Shrimp  (less than 5 mins walk from Team Lab Planets)
This is a great option for those who are looking for gluten free food near Team Lab Planets
For lunch here I would budget for 2000-3000 yen per adult and almost double that at dinner time.  Kids meals (10 year olds and younger)  are a little under 1000 yen and include options such as cheeseburgers, popcorn shrimp and fries, fish & chips, chicken strips, pepperoni pizza.
They do accept most major credit cards.   Please note that there is a service charge of 10% put on the bill at the end.

The entire restaurant is non-smoking.  This restaurant has space to store strollers while you dine and also allows guests with infants to bring in and serve their own baby food from home.
They do have an English menu.   You can also see the entire Bubba Gump Shrimp Japan menu online here.
This is a really big restaurant so I would not worry about booking unless you are eating here on weekends or national holidays.   Walk-ins are usually fine for smaller groups.

Komeda’s Coffee
(less than 5 mins walk from Team Lab Planets) is inside Lalaport too. In the South Port section on the second floor.
Breakfast is served from 7am-11am.  It is a simple breakfast plate with bread and jam (or just butter) a hard boiled egg and a small salad and around 600 yen. See pictures of the Komeda’s Coffee breakfast menu here.

They are also a fabulous kid-friendly option for lunch and dinner.
They accept most major credit cards.  They are a walk-in only spot.
See pictures of the Komeda’s Coffee kids plate here.  All meals (adults and kids) are under 1000 yen.
My kids also love the desserts here.

My son’s soft serve ice-cream came out like this and we couldn’t stop laughing

The food menu here is mostly fried chicken, pasta, frankfurter sausages, burgers and pasta.

Another shopping suggestion within Lalaport (less than 5 mins walk from Team Lab Planets)
On the ground floor, near the ground floor food court, you will find international grocery store Kaldi.*Kaldi stores are fab for if your kids are craving more familiar food options.  Here  you can find international items such as Halal options,  oat crackers, oatmeal, twinings earl grey, tomato juice, cous cous, maple syrup, skippy peanut butter, nutella, vegemite etc.

English books in Lalaport
There is a bookstore within the Lalaport Shopping Complex called Yurindo and they have a small English books section. Of course you will be paying imported book prices but it might help if you have a little one who has just finished a novel from home and are ready to start a new one.

1 min walk from Toyosu Station is family-friendly restaurant Asian Dining Darima Toyosu.
The food here is Thai fusion (there are also some indian fusion dishes.)   This restaurant takes reservations (although the restaurant does seat 100 people so you could also try for a walk-in.)  At lunch time, I recommend budgeting for 2000 yen per adult.  More like 3000 yen at dinner time. They accept most major credit cards.   They have space for strollers and wheelchairs.  Asian Dining Darima Toyosu has a vegetarian menu.   If you are travelling with a large group you can also ask about their all you can eat and all you can drink courses when making a reservation. See pictures of the full menu at Asian Dining Darima Toyosu.    They also have high chairs and kids menu ( a one plate meal that includes a  sweet butter chicken or shrimp curry, salad, rice and a soft drink.)

Toyosu Park Playground – Seesaw

Summer BBQ restaurant option (June – Sept only)
Kiranah Garden Toyosu is a BBQ restaurant.   They have a kids menu for 800 yen.
Warning: busy on weekends and during Japanese school holidays so it’s a good idea to make reservations.
There are also by-the-pool cabanas to rent (starting at 8000 yen per person for 4 hour time slots.)  There is a shallow kids pool but not an option for children who are not yet toilet trained – no swimming nappies allowed.

Closest free indoor options?
Tokyo Gas Science Museum (FREE)
(6 mins walk from Team Lab Planets)
This museum is excellent for kids 0-5. It’s very interactive for little ones.  Entry is free and there is no need for a reservation.  Open 9:30am-5pm (last entry at 4:30pm)

Tokyo Water Science Museum (FREE)
(20 mins walk or 11 mins – approx 1500 yen – by taxi from Team Lab Planets)

Legoland Discovery Centre, Odaiba (9 mins in a cab from Team Lab Planets, you can take public transport and it will take more like 20 mins)
Please note that this is like a big indoor Lego themed playcentre. It is perfect for small babies up until around 8 years old. I have a full write up on the Legoland Discover Centre Odaiba here.

The 4D Cinema at Legoland Odaiba. These movies don’t use any words so they are perfect for children who speak any language at all.
Legoland in Odaiba has a Shibuya Crossing made entirely of Lego. Children can press a button to make it day or night.

Visit Miraikan (10 mins in a cab from Team Lab Planets or 15 mins on public transport)
This is a FABULOUS museum for kids – very interactive and very technology / future focused.
I have a big write up on Miraikan: The Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation here.

Joypolis Indoor Amusement Park (10 mins in a cab or 25 mins on public transport)
This place is 4 floors of indoor rides and games. It’s fun but not a “must-see” in my opinion and is most fun if your kids are all over 110cms tall (see my tips here on things like why it’s best to know the height and weight of your kids in metric before you travel to Japan you know answers like this quickly.)
I’ve written more about Joypolis here.

After Joypolis, check out all of these fun things to do with kids in the Odaiba area.

A playground near Tsukiji Outer Market and near Team Lab Planets?
Chuo Kuritsu Akasaki Park is 10 mins walk from the Tsukiji Outer Markets or 4 mins walk from Tsukiji Station.  It is also 9 mins (approx 1,600 yen) in a cab from Team Lab Planets.
This park is very much an inner city park but has space to play, swings (including those bucket swings that also work for babies) a tyre playground and a flying fox.   There are public toilets here and there is also a fountain.

A miniature museum
A miniature museum called Small Worlds Tokyo is just 11 minutes away by public transport (or 5 minutes in a cab.) My kids love this place.  I’ve written in detail about Small Worlds Tokyo here.

Kidzania (less than 5 mins walk!)
This is the indoor theme park with all of the jobs for kids to try.
I’ve written in detail about Kidzania Japan here.

Don’t know how much I want to eat this – but gosh it’s so cute to watch them make it. Kidzania

Australian Restaurant Bills Japan for brekkie, lunch or dinner (8 mins in a cab or 20 mins on public transport from Team Lab Planets)
It’s an Australian restaurant so it’s a nice open space (even accommodates strollers) with an international menu.  Here is the link to the Bills Odaiba menu and here is the Bills Odaiba kids menu.  There are a few other of the Bills Restaurants in Tokyo but this is the least crowded – especially compared to the others on the weekend.   The service isn’t the fastest so order for kids as soon as you sit down.  Bills Odaiba is 3 mins walk from Odaiba Kaihin Koen Station (if you can’t find it early in the morning, best to go around to the deck facing the water and the rainbow bridge – it is on the corner of the deck near Legoland.)
This restaurant is fine for you just wheel your stroller up beside the table while you dine, if you like.
This is also a great option for lunch. This restaurant also serves brown rice on the side – which I know some families really like.

Go to Eggs’N’Things for American Style Pancakes stacked high with whipped cream (8 mins in a cab from Team Lab Planets or 20 mins on public transport)
n’Things is a Hawaiian restaurant built around the concept of “All Day Breakfast” ( a relatively new idea for Japan.)  It is light and bright and there are several of these restaurants around Japan but this is branch my favourite – mainly because of the space and shorter lines.   This restaurant is well-known for the mountain of whipped cream on their sweet pancakes. YUM!   They also have savoury options and a kids menu (egg and hamburger steak plate or fruit and cream pancakes with a chocolate pen to decorate).  They have high chairs and the staff are very welcoming when it comes to families.
Some gluten free friends of mine have had luck eating here eating meat dishes but ordering rice instead of bread (and also showing a bilingual card explaining that they are gluten free.) However, please note that there is no official gluten free menu.

Go for Pizza at Logic (8 mins in a cab from Team Lab Planets or 20 mins on public transport)
This is a Pizza /Pasta restaurant right next door called Trattoria Pizzeria Logic. My kids love their Margherita Pizza and I’m always daydreaming about their Caprese salad.
It’s not a fancy restaurant but I like how they have outdoor seating on the deck (so I feel much more comfortable with my kids spilling everywhere.)
They have high chairs.
If you are there for lunch, they offer a bottomless juice bar which includes iced tea, grapefruit juice and orange juice.

All you can eat American Food Chain “Sizzler”
Did you know that Japan has all you can eat restaurant Sizzler?
There is one on the basement floor of the Tokyo International Forum. *This restaurant is 1 min walk from Tokyo Station or 2 mins walk from Yurakucho Station. From Team Lab Planets, this restaurant is 16 mins by taxi / approx 2500 yen.
It is an easy option for families who want to eat lots of salads and American style meals.  It is also an easy option for gluten free visitors -they have a detailed allergen menu for their steak sauces and also for salad options etc.
Budget for adults for lunch – 3000 yen and approx 6000 yen at dinnertime.
Sizzler accepts most major credit cards. The entire restaurant is non-smoking.

Another idea : Take the Yurikamome (monorail-style) train to Odaiba or Shinbashi from Shin-Toyosu Station (this station is right outside Team Lab Planets.) .

“Driving” the train on the yurikamome line.

Position yourself on the platform and line up to be in the front carriage.
Why??! Because the train is unmanned so my kids like to feel like they are “driving.” It’s so cute.
These trains come often so, if you miss one, another will be along shortly – no need to panic or run for a train here.
When buying tickets for the Yurikamome, even if you have a suica card or whatever, I really recommend getting kids to buy their own in cash. It’s a really cool way for them to purchase something in yen (and it’s only a few hundred yen to do so.)   Tickets are purchased at the vending machine  – you look at your “end” station and look at the number above it – the bigger amount is the adult price and the smaller amount is the kids price.* If your kids are old enough – get them to find the station, tell you how much it is and enter the money. They can even check the change!
(Just sharing a family rule we have when we buy our own paper tickets – kids can use them to put through the turnstiles on their own but they then have to give the tickets back to the grown ups before going up to the platform. They get them back for the turnstiles / ticket gates at the other end – trust me, saves many tears over lost tickets. )
Kids under 6 are free. Kids prices are for 6-12 year olds. The only exception? Kids under 6 are free as long as there are only 1-2 kids per adult – ie. if I was travelling on my own with 3 kids, I’d need to purchase 1 x child ticket for that third child. Make sense?
This special “driving the train” journey is my kids favourite part of travelling to this part of Tokyo.  So much so that I get grumpy if an actual adult sits up front – leave it for the kiddies!

When at TEAM LAB PLANETS – did you know that you’re also not far from Tsukiji ? (8 mins if you jump in a cab!)
See here for things to do at Tsukiji Outer Fish Markets with kids.

When at TEAM LAB PLANETS – did you know that you’re also not far from Ginza? (8 mins if you jump in a cab!)
