Worldschooling parents are reaching out to me more and more for advice on how to make their time in Japan the most enriching and valuable experience for their families.
I do recommend leaning into a slower and more authentic approach to travel and general life in Japan. I also think it is important to choose a convenient base that allows your family to get around easily while also having access to supermarkets, major train stations and outdoor play options at local parks and playgrounds. The last point is also important as it can also present children with the opportunity to make friends with other children who are living in Japan.
I think it’s also important to embrace lots of different types of Japan. Many people think of built up cities with sky scrappers and busy intersections but, even in Tokyo, the city is spread out with parks and local quieter suburbs.

Where are my recommended playgrounds for kids in Tokyo?
I love these retro playgrounds scattered all around Tokyo. They are different, interesting to look at and are just perfect for allowing little brains to get imaginative and creative.
Where to stay with kids while worldschooling in Tokyo?
I recommend these longer term apartments called Sumii. This company own more than 17 properties around Tokyo. Unlike renting long term in Japan normally, they don’t require any key money (although it is a one month minimum and a one year max to stay here.) I love how all cooking utensils and appliances, linen etc are included too. I have written in detail about the Sumii Yoyogi-Uehara property here if you’d like to have a read.

Sumii now have 3 brand new apartments in the following areas (in addition to Yoyogi-Uehara) :
Ebisu
Hongo
Ueno
Can Sumii Apartments assist with extra items for families?
Yes! In fact, Sumii are open to additional requests such as cots for small children and high chairs etc. When making an inquiry let them know which options you will require as a family.
Rental options for families include the following:
-Baby gates
-Baby mattresses
-Cots
-Strollers
-Baby carriers
-Baby baths
-Baby monitors
-Milk warmers
Where do I recommend staying when outside of Tokyo with kids who are worldschooling?
I adore this homestay like guest house in the countryside outside of Tokyo. Charming and a fabulous way to meet locals in the countryside and eat local produce etc.
Are there any experiences in Tokyo that allow for worldschooling families to spend time in a Japanese home?
I cannot recommend the Nagomi experience highly enough. It is fantastic. Through this program, families can dine with a Japanese family in their home. It is such a special experience.
How to incorporate traditional Japan into a stay in Tokyo?
I have a list that I constantly add to of my favourite more cultural and traditional spots in Tokyo that we enjoy visiting as a family. Read my list here.
Where to stay with worldschoolers outside of Tokyo?
Personally, I would choose a long and slow experience with kids in Takayama.

I would also spend time in Kurashiki.
