SOME OF MY FAVOURITE KID-FRIENDLY RESTAURANTS WITH RESERVATIONS STILL AVAILABLE DURING GOLDEN WEEK, 2026

SOME OF MY FAVOURITE KID-FRIENDLY RESTAURANTS WITH RESERVATIONS STILL AVAILABLE DURING GOLDEN WEEK, 2026

These are some of my favourite kid-friendly restaurants with reservations still available during Golden Week in Osaka and Kyoto – this article was last revised by me April 20, 2026 (and I will update this date every time I made a change.)

Here are all of my tips to avoid long wait times for trains, restaurants and other events in general during this time.

Golden Week 2026 dates are Wed, April 29 – Wed, May 6.

Please note that it is especially important to make reservations if you have allergies or special dietary requirements as your options are more limited and it’s harder to just “wing it” in busier times. See my advice on visiting Japan with allergies here.

KYOTO
Rooftop Pizza (with gluten free options)
Mr Maurice’s Italian at Ace Hotel Kyoto has a lovely rooftop.  They also have a lovely brunch here (after 11am.). Best to book as it is popular.
Children welcome and they have space to store a stroller.  They have an English menu which also includes vegetarian options and gluten free spaghetti.   Budget for adults during the day – approx 3000 yen and more like 6000 yen at night.  Please note that this restaurant has a 10% service charge to your bill at the end.   The entire restaurant is non-smoking. You can see their full menu here.  On a Friday and Sat night this is kind of a date spot so, for me, I wouldn’t visit here with kids on those nights after 7:30pm (more pressure to not disturb others etc, but that’s just me.)   It’s really easy to make a reservation via their website in English. Make a reservation at Mr Maurice’s Italian here.

Michelin Star Omakase with a vegan course option
Also near Karasuma Oike Station (5 mins walk from Exit 3-1) is an omakase restaurant called Muromachi Waden.
I haven’t had the privilege of dining at Michelin Star awarded restaurant Muromachi Wakuden yet but I have heard amazing things – especially regarding their vegan tasting meal with sake pairing. This restaurant welcomes children and babies – they will organise a private room for families. The entire restaurant is non-smoking. Please budget 20,000 yen per adult at lunch time and 40,000 yen at dinner time. Make a reservation here using the ByFood site ( you can even explain allergies etc all in English here.
Please note :
OMAKASE SUSHI IS FINE DINING AND THE CHEF CHOOSES THE MENU. IT MEANS THE CHEF CHOOSES.
You don’t have to eat everything on your plate*. You don’t even have to try everything. You are the customer. But you don’t get to choose the menu.
*Japanese people do dislike food wastage (don’t we all?!) and so I recommend at least trying each dish OR if you are not the type to want to try lots of new and wonderful delicacies – then I don’t think omakase style is the best choice for you. Go for a restaurant where you order the dishes you want to eat (a la carte or tanpin as it’s called in Japan.)
Here are a whole lot of my personal tips on dining etiquette in Japan.

Spanish/ Italian dining in the heart of Gion
Rigoletto is a Spanish, Italian restaurant in the middle of Gion.  It’s actually a really special experience as the whole area is full of older  Japanese wooden buildings – but behind one of these doors is Rigoletto Smoke Bar & Grill, Gion.    For lunchtime here, I would budget approximately 2000 yen per adult and for dinnertime? More like 5000 yen.   Please note that this restaurant has a 10% service charge added to the bill for those dining after 5pm.   This restaurant accepts most major credit cards. The entire restaurant is non-smoking.
This restaurant welcomes families but it is a bit of a special vibe so it’s not really a “bring an iPad” kind of place.  So we always take a few sheets for colouring in.  If your kids aren’t yet able to sit in their seat for a meal then save this restaurant for another time instead.
Reservations for Rigoletto can be made on the TableCheck website here.
The staff here speak English really well.  You can see pictures and the full Rigoletto Gion menu here.
Rigoletto is 7 mins walk from Gion Shijo Station (via Exit 6.) If you take a taxi from Kyoto Station, it will take approximately 10 mins (approx 1500 yen.)

Soy Milk Pork Shabu Shabu (next to Shijo Station)
This restaurant is called Tonyu Ton Shabu Shabu Torataro and requires that all tables be reserved and ask that those dining with kids reserve a private room (which is actually great as you don’t need to worry about kids wriggling about and disturbing others.)   The broth for the shabu shabu is creamy and made with soy milk and the pork is to be cooked lightly in the pot that everyone shares. Shabu Shabu is a fabulous and interactive way to dine as a family in Japan.
The way it works is – you choose a Course and then they bring out all of the ingredients to be cooked in the pot at the table (don’t worry – they will show you what to do.)
1 min walk from Shijo Station and 3 mins walk from Karasuma Station.
Budget for lunch is around 3000 yen per adult and more like 7000 yen at dinnertime.   This restaurant accepts most major credit cards.  There is also a kids menu.  This restaurant also has high chairs. It is best to ask your hotel to make reservations for you or you can make a reservation on tabelog.

Gluten free Italian / Spanish/ Japanese fusion
This entire restaurant is gluten free. It is called Kyoto Italian Oushoku Kappa and it is a 2 min walk from Exit 5 of Shijo Station. This restaurant takes reservations (they only seat 25 so a reservation is a good idea.) Make a reservation for Kyoto Italian Oushoku Kappa here. Please budget for 3000 yen per adult for lunch here and more like 13,000 yen at dinner time (there is also a service charge of 10% at dinner time). They accept most major credit cards. The entire restaurant is non-smoking. This restaurant can also cater to vegan and vegetarian clientele.

Pizza and Pasta
Trattoria Amore Kiyamachi is a beautiful spot to have a meal as a family in the Gion area. The restaurant welcomes children. This restaurant is 5 mins walk from Hankyu Kawaramachi Station and Keihan Gion Shijo Station. I recommend budgeting 2000 yen for lunch per adult or more like 4000 yen at dinner time. They accept most major credit cards. There is a service charge of 380 yen per adult at dinner time May-mid-Oct. The entire venue is non-smoking. They also have space for strollers. See the full menu at Trattoria Amore Kiyamachi here. Ask your hotel to make a reservation on your behalf (they prefer reservations be made directly.)

Vegan cafe with some gluten free options
A well-loved Vegan Restaurant Ain Soph Journey Kyoto will definitely require a reservation. Make a reservation online for Ain Soph Journey Kyoto here. This restaurant is also 2 mins walk from Exit 9 of Hankyu Kawaramachi Station or 10 mins walk from Exit 4 of Gion Shijo Station. They accept most major credit cards. I recommend budgeting for 2000 yen per person to dine here. They also have a gluten free menu.

Gyoza, Ramen & Fried Rice
I recommend going to Tiger Gyoza Hall (or Tiger Gyoza Kaikan) for lunch or dinner.  It’s casual and yummy and also so budget friendly.  You can also ask the staff for their vegan friendly menu.
This restaurant accepts reservations – make a reservation here using google translate OR ask your hotel to make one on your behalf.  It does seat 68 people so you won’t have to wait too long if there is a line.  Tiger Gyoza Hall Shijo accepts most major credit cards.
For lunch here I would budget for 1500 yen for lunch per person and around 3000 yen for dinner.  Kids are welcome here and you don’t need to order them a full meal but it is polite to have at least one dish per person – even if that dish isn’t going to be consumed by that child-  ordered (the idea is you share all items accept for ramen anyway. If you want to share a little bit of ramen with kids, I recommend asking for a small side plate – a torizaraand you can make them their own little mini-bowl.)
This restaurant is 5 mins walk from Karasuma Station and 5 mins walk from Nishiki Market.

Kobe Beef / Teppanyaki restaurant in Gion
**Please note that this restaurant only welcomes children 10 years of age or older**

The Kobe beef restaurant Mouriya ( you’ll see it recommended in my Kobe with kids post) has a branch in Gion!  Make a reservation for Mouriya in Gion here.
Moriya Gion is high end beef so this is a special spot and so for lunch I would budget for 7000 yen per adult and 15,000 yen for dinner.  This restaurant accepts most major credit cards and the whole venue is non-smoking. The Mouriya brand have been buying and cooking Kobe for more than 140 years. This restaurant is beautiful and is great for a very special occasion type of dinner.
Dress code is smart casual.  This restaurant also can help those who are gluten free.

CASUAL “MOM & POP” STYLE TEPPANYAKI WITH KIDS IN GION
Casual “Mom & Pop” style teppanyaki in Gion
Teppan Tavern Tenamonya is run by a husband and wife team.
The interior is retro but cosy.  For dinner here I would budget around 7000 yen per adult.    Reservations are required here (best to book at least 1 week in advance) as the restaurant is small but also popular.
Make sure you try the A5 Wagyu Beef.
This restaurant is fine with kids but they like to know how many children will be there when you make a reservation.  They do not have space for strollers and they don’t have high chairs but they do have plastic cutlery and plates.
Little warning: This restaurant is rated highly on TripAdvisor which means that it is often full of international guests more than Japanese people. If this doesn’t appeal, please try one of my other suggested restaurants.
They accept most major credit cards.  They have an English menu and a vegetarian menu. Reservations must be made via the Teppan Tavern Tenamonya website.
Teppan Tavern Tenamonya is 10 mins walk from Keihan Gion Shijo Station and Hankyu Kawaramachi Station.
4 mins walk from Maruyama Park.

Casual Kaiseki style Izakaya meal with kids
Just 5 mins walk from Keihan Sanjo Station or 5 mins walk from Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae Station (or 7 mins walk from Hankyu Kawarachi Station) is family-friendly Kaiseki style Izakaya restaurant  Kotowari.   If you have older kids, ask to sit at the counter so that you can watch eat dish be cooked and prepared.  If you have infants or toddlers, you will be seated in the tatami room (this is better as it is easier for kids to have a wriggle during the meal and less pressure to be quiet.) Kotowari can also prepare a special kids menu if they are given advance notice.  They also have children’s plates and cutlery. Here, they accept most major credit cards.   Reservations are required to dine here – ask your hotel to make a reservation for you in Japanese.  If it’s someone in your group’s birthday, they can organize a birthday dessert plate – with a minimum 3 day notice.
Budget for lunch : 2000 yen per person.  Budget for dinner : 4500 yen per person.

Pizza in Arashiyama
It seems random but I recommend a very very traditional-looking Japanese restaurant that actually serves amazing pizza! It is important to make a reservation here. The restaurant name is Mama. They also do takeaway – see the Mama takeout menu here. See the in-house dining menu for lunch and dinner here. I recommend budgeting 3000 yen at lunch time here and more like 5000 yen at dinner time. They accept most major credit cards. OSAKA
A gluten free AND vegan restaurant that does Okonomiyaki & Takoyaki (near JR Osaka & Umeda Station)
Less than 5 mins from Osaka Station. I have copy and pasted the directions from the Vegan & Gluten Free Osaka website.
From JR Osaka station(Central entrance)
Go through the central exit on your right and 7-Eleven on your left. Daimaru Department Store will be on your left, walk further and exit. There is a large crosswalk, so cross it. If you go straight for about 200 meters through the passage on the right side of Hanshin Department Store, you will see the Osaka Ekimae Building 4 on your left. There is an elevator when you enter from the side of Kotaro Pharmacy(yellow sign). Go down to the 1st basement floor and our store is next to the escalator.

You may want to search for this place using the address as the name is so random and descriptive that google, naturally, gets confused.
Order the okonomiyaki! See here for the full Vegan & Gluten Free Osaka menu. They also serve gluten free beer. Please note that this restaurant is a walk-in restaurant only so you may have to wait and it can be hard with a big group.

This okonomiyaki is gluten free AND vegan at Vegan & Gluten Free Osaka.

All day breakfast & Pancakes (near Umeda Station)
Eggs’n’Things is a Hawaiian restaurant built around the concept of “All Day Breakfast” (a relatively new idea for Japan.)  It is light and bright and there are several of these restaurants around Japan but this is branch my favourite – mainly because of the space and shorter lines.   This restaurant is well-known for the mountain of whipped cream on their sweet pancakes. YUM!   They also have savoury options and a kids menu (egg and hamburger steak plate or fruit and cream pancakes with a chocolate pen to decorate).  They have high chairs and the staff are very welcoming when it comes to families.
The Umeda Eggs N Things is actually a very very beautiful restaurant – it’s light and open and modern.
This restaurant accepts most major credit cards and the entire restaurant is non-smoking.
Free colouring for kids too.
Some gluten free friends of mine have had luck eating here eating meat dishes but ordering rice instead of bread (and also showing a bilingual card explaining that they are gluten free.) However, please note that there is no official gluten free menu.

Gluten Free & Vegan Ramen options at Osaka Engine (near Honmachi Station)
Osaka Engine is a lovely family friendly option (opened after Kyoto Engine had wonderful reception!) Osaka Engine has gluten free AND vegan options. Many of my gluten free readers say that this was their favourite meal in Japan. The black miso ramen here is excellent.
Gluten free diners are given a special bowl that indicates they are gluten free and a special coaster for their drink too. It is 3 mins walk from Sakaisuji Honmachi Station. I recommend ordering the gluten free and vegan gyoza dumpliings and the vegan ice-cream. Make a reservation online here. They accept most major credit cards. 8 mins walk from Honmachi Station.

Organic Cafe (near Umeda Station)

This cafe Natural Kitchen Medaka Ni-goten has amazing lunch sets and there is also a kids menu.  The menu changes daily but always has a protein with a side of 2-3 vegetable dishes.
This restaurant does accept reservations.   There is also a small vegetarian menu in English.  Popular menu items include the vegetable curry and the salad bowls.
Please do note that, although this restaurant’s menu is filled with lots of beautiful, organic vegetables – it is not a vegetarian restaurant so please check and ask for a meat-free meal if you are vegetarian.
There are often 1 or 2 vegan options here AND gluten free meals- best to have your hotel call and confirm ahead of time.
Natural Kitchen Medaka Ni-goten is 11 minutes walk from Umeda Station.   Please note that this restaurant is cash only. The entire restaurant is non-smoking and has free wifi.

If you are interested in trying a kid-friendly Omakase sushi experience in Osaka, I recommend Misuji.
Children must be 6 years old or older.  This is a high end experience so I recommend only visiting with kids who enjoy sushi and sashimi (and not just the egg and vegetable kind) AND are big enough to stay seated for the whole experience.    They do sell a small number of tempura ingredients on their a la carte menu.   If you have kids who are too small to take along – I recommend buying their takeout chirashi sushi bento for 5000 yen. It’s incredible.    They accept most major credit cards. Customers are asked to not wear any perfume or cologne.   They have an English menu – see the full Misuji menu here.  The view from this restaurant at night is also lovely.   This restaurant is 10 mins by cab from Osaka Station but it’s probably easiest to take the train from Nishi-Umeda to Higobashi Station instead as it’s just one stop.  You could also walk from Osaka Station – takes approx 14 mins.  See pictures of the restaurant and the dishes on the Misuji instagram account here.   Make a reservation for Misuji here.   At lunch, I recommend budgeting for 8000 yen per person.  At dinner time?  15,000.
Please note : OMAKASE IS NOT FOR FUSSY / PICKY EATERS.
OMAKASE SUSHI IS FINE DINING AND THE CHEF CHOOSES THE MENU. THAT MEANS YOU WILL LIKELY GET SUSHI ITEMS LIKE FISH EGGS, SQUID, FISH SPERM, SEA URCHIN ETC. YOU CANNOT CHOOSE WHAT YOU DO AND DON’T LIKE. THAT IS OMAKASE.
High End Tempura (near Naniwa Station)
If you would like to try a high end tempura experience with kids, I recommend Numata So. It is 4 mins walk from Naniwa Station. You will need to make a reservation as the restaurant is small and with small children you will need to book a private room (which will add an additional 10% to your bill at the end.)
For lunch or dinner, please budget for between 20,000 -30,000 yen per adult (they do also have a kid’s menu.) They are also happy for you to bring a stroller.
They accept most major credit cards. The entire restaurant is non-smoking. You can make an online reservation in English for Numata So here.

They welcome children and little babies.  They accept most major credit cards.  Please note that there is a service charge of 330 yen per person to dine here ( you are given an otoshi as a thank you and you don’t have to eat it if you don’t want to- just keep it on the table.)
They have an English menu here. There is space to store your stroller while you dine.
I recommend budgeting for 4000 yen per adult here – but this amount includes all you can eat meat so it is definitely a great price.  A great place to try Wagyu Beef too (*little tip : it’s pronounced WA-GYUUU not WA-GOO.)

Sushi Nakago Bettei, Shinsaibashi (near Shinsaibashi Station)
This is a great casual restaurant to have a casual lunch with an omakase sushi course.
Omakase courses at lunchtime are 2,800 yen, 5,800 yen or 9,800 yen.
This restaurant allows babies as well as children. They have space to store a stroller while you dine.
If you are not having an omakase course and ordering a set course or off the menu..
I recommend budgeting around 3000 yen for lunch and 10.000 yen per adult for dinner.
Sushi Nakago Bettei is 3 mins walk from Shinsaibashi Station or 7 mins walk from Namba Station.
This restaurant accepts most major credit cards.   There is a table charge of 330 yen per person (and to say thank you you will be gifted a small appetizer of the season called an “otoshi”)
Sushi Nakago Bettei is completely non-smoking.
The interior of this restaurant is very beautiful (as you can see from Sushi Nakago Betters instagram account here)
Book using this ByFood link now if you have allergies or want to choose your exact course ahead of time. You can tell them exactly what you can and can’t eat and order your exact course online. The restaurant asks that you refrain from wearing perfumes or scented hair products.

OPEN 11:30AM-10:30PM (CLOSES AT 9:30PM ON SUNDAYS)

ANOTHER SUGGESTION:
This Osaka Street Food Tour allows people of all ages (even families with strollers) but I personally recommend this tour for parents with a young baby in a carrier OR with teens who are up for trying lots of different foods. THEY CURRENTLY STILL HAVE AVAILABILITIES FOR GOLDEN WEEK.
