LIVE LIKE A LOCAL IN A TRADITIONAL JAPANESE FAMILY HOME IN OSAKA

Everyone who knows me and my blog knows how I’m constantly on the hunt for experiences to recommend to families in Japan – experiences that can replicate my first year in Japan where I lived as an international exchange student and stayed with Japanese families in their Japanese homes.
Read here if you’d like to know more about my own story in Japan.

Read here if you are looking for day trip options from Osaka.

I got full tingles first entering Tokujiro no Yado. Full. Body. Super Nostalgic. Chills.
This is proper Japanese home AND it can accommodate so many people! ( up to 10 guests!!) The way the home is laid out is practically identical to the homes I have lived in as an exchange student – down to the doors and that beautiful smell of tatami. You can jump right on the Tokujiro no Yado instagram account right now for a virtual tour right now, actually. It’s so so lovely !
Please let them know that you found them through my blog when you end up booking!

It is owned by the most beautiful Japanese family – a real family business where everyone helps out! You will want to stay in touch – they are just the most warm and lovely people.

People from Osaka are known for being friendly and warm. Casual friendly in the best way, if you know what I mean. They rarely take themselves too seriously and immediately engage with others like they have been friends for the longest time. This family? Yes. The vibes are right in line with that beautiful Kansai friendly stereotype, for sure.
Also, families know what other families with kids need, right? The space, the toys, the high chairs, the plates and cups and cooking options.

I’ve been hanging to write all about my stay here. So many international families are going to LOVE this place.

Where is Tokujiro no Yado?
It is 16 mins by train from Osaka Airport (12 mins if you take a taxi.)
After my stay, I needed to rent a car and it was so easy to organise a rental car on Klook* and just go and collect it on the day of check out from Kansai International Airport. *Please note that you will need to organise an international driver’s license before leaving your home country in order to drive in Japan.
What to read before driving in Japan
The Japan Automobile Federation has a detailed guide on road safety in Japan here.
Here is the link to the National Police Agency’s Traffic Safety Guidelines in Japan.

And here is the National Police Agency’s brochure for international drivers in Japan.
And here are my personal tips for driving in Japan.

I’m told that many of the families who stay are not only using this home as their last or first stop before flying in or out of Japan but a large amount are actually basing themselves here as they have been craving a quieter neighbourhood to explore as if they are locals. It also makes for a great base for visiting the following nearby locations for sightseeing.

Tokujiro no Yado is the PERFECT Osaka accommodation for:
-larger families
-two or three families who are travelling together
-those who are want to make their travel budget last longer
-those who want a more authentic Japan experience (more than just time in a hotel)
families with special dietary needs or allergies that require access to their own kitchen and dining room
-families who fly into or out of Kansai International Airport
-families who have always wanted to see what it would be like to actuallylive in Japan
-families who want the chance for a slower paced part of their Japan trip (family walks to local playgrounds and local supermarkets, trying local restaurants together etc.)
-families who are worried about jetlag and want somewhere near the airport that is comfortable and gives everyone time to properly adjust

How long does it take to get to other nearby spots from Tokujiro no Yado:
-5 mins by cab (or 15 mins walk) to Rinku Town Shopping Mall & Premium Outlets (you can see the Ferris Wheel from the street outside the house)
-16 mins by train to Kansai International Airport (12 mins by cab)
-32 mins by acar to Inunaki Mountain & Shippouryu-ji Temple
-36 mins by express train to Namba in Osaka
-1 hour 5 mins to Shin-Osaka Station by train (Shin-Osaka is the bullet train station in Osaka)
-1 hour 20 mins to Universal Studios Japan by train (40 mins by car)
-1 hour 10 mins by train to Wakayama
-1 hour 35 mins by train to Nara
-1 hour 45 mins by train to Kyoto
-2 hours by train toKobe (1 hour by car)
-2 hours by train to Sylvanian Park

Hagurazaki Station is the closest train station – just 3 mins walk away. If you have a lot of luggage you can ask the owners to collect you (they really are the sweetest!)* Of course you will need to request this at the time of making a reservation as some days family members will not be available.
There is also a taxi rank right next to the station (has a little red roof over the waiting area and the sign says タクシー専用待機場所)

The upstairs bedrooms at Tokujiro no Yado
Upstairs has 3 large bedrooms – all separated by sliding doors so it is possible to turn this space into one massive room for a family, if that’s what you’re after.

Please remember that you MUST report the exact number of people who will be staying at your accommodation in Japan (even small babies.) This is required by law but is also for safety reasons- if there is a natural disaster or other emergency, it is important for the owners to be able to assist every person staying on their property.

I love how spacious these bedrooms are. There is another room behind those sliding doors at the back and ANOTHER ROOM again after that (so, with the sliding doors, it can all open up into one giant room, if required.)
See how you can roll back the doors to the next bedroom?
You can also see my white hand luggage roller suitcase and black softer bag that can slide on the top while I’m pulling it around. I have written about the type of luggage I recommend using for Japan here.
Second and third bedroom along at Tokujiro no Yado. So much room for a cot etc too, right? They do provide a cot – just let the staff know in the notes when you make your reservation.
In this pic you can see the corridor/hallway that runs down the side of all three bedrooms.

The downstairs living room and tatami rooms at Tokujiro no Yado
This is the section that makes me the most nostalgic! This is almost identical so to many of the family homes I lived in as a homestay exchange student as a teenager! The leather couch and the table all next to the tatami room! This just makes me so so happy!

The ground floor living room and tatami room at Tokujiro no Yado. The tatami room can also become an extra bedroom.
The living room at Tokujiro no Yado in the morning light.
I love how a tatami room can be used in so many ways – the perfect place to lie and read, study or drawing, a little nap, a family board game night.

This is why families know best what other families need !

The kitchen and dining table at Tokujiro no Yado
It’s so wonderful how the kitchen is already stocked up with plates and cutlery and saucepans etc. See the high chair in the corner too? And the hot plates, toaster oven, microwave, rice cooker, kettle and there is also a fridge just around the corner.
See here for my meal suggestions that you can make quickly for kids and babies using convenience store foods.

The laundry at Tokujiro no Yado

The laundry room at Tokujiro no Yado. I love how many hangers there are (many accommodation options in Japan forget that, if they are going to sleep lots of bodies they also need to have facilities that also cater to that volume of people.)The laundry at Tokujiro no Yado.

The bathroom at Tokujiro no Yado

The changing space just outside the bathroom at Tokujiro no Yado. The idea is – like at an onsen, you remove your clothing here and then put your clothes in the basket for while you’re in the shower and bath. Look at those bath toys for kids too!

Check out this spacious bathroom (and the terrace out the back!) This is one of those baths where you push a button to fill the bath (make sure the plug is in, of course) and then it sings a little song when the bath is ready. AND!!! It will keep the bath water the same temperature for as long as you would like! You can soak for ages in a bath that literally NEVER GETS COLD!
Don’t worry, there is a manual in the house to help you work the bath, shower, aircon remotes and washing machine etc.

The bathroom at Tokujiro no Yado. If you know me you KNOW I love a lovely deep Japanese bath (and so do my kids.) If you’d like to have a bath the traditional Japanese way – you have a shower first and use your soaps and conditioner and shampoos etc and then, once your body is rinsed and clean you soak in the tub. That area at the back of this picture? That’s a cute little outdoor terrace. You could sit out there and read or dry washing OR if you’re really clever, you could have kids play out there while you soak in the tub!

This is a personal recommendation but I love sitting in a deep Japanese bath and eating Pino. Pino are these little chocolate covered vanilla ice-creams (sold at the convenience stores for a little over 100 yen) and in the packet is a little toothpick for stabbing them and eating them. It sounds like a weird combo the cold food while in a warm bath feels so so lush! Recommend! (you need to eat quick though before the steam turns them into ice-cream soup!

This is required by law but is also for safety reasons- if there is a natural disaster or other emergency, it is important for the owners to be able to assist every person staying on their property.

This beautiful home doesn’t have ANY curfews so you can come and go as you please. The owners do ask that you, of course, move quietly after 9pm for the sake of the neighbours in the area.

Nothing says cute Japanese quaint neighbourhood more than this, really.

Supermarkets near Tokujiro no Yado
5 mins walk from Tokujiro no Yado is a giant 24 hour supermarket, Max Valu. This is such a massive supermarket by Japan standards. Lots of fresh produce, cooking ingredients and toiletries and beauty products. They also sell lots of freshly baked bread, ready made bentos and deli items. See my general tips on shopping at supermarkets in Japan here. They accept most major credit cards here.

The bread in the grocery section. As I speak about in my convenience store post – bread loaves in Japan can look different to what you may be used to as they are sold more often as a half loaf and then the number of slices in the pack determines the thickness.
See how this one says 6 ? so it’s 6 thick slices of bread. You can also find 8 slices or 10 slices (this is more commonly found in the supermarket, not just the convenience stores though.)

Yakiniku restaurant Jonetsu Horumon (6 mins walk from Tokujiro no Yado)
I recommend budgeting for 4000 yen per adult to dine here. Every table has their own bbq to cook the meat and then you choose your own marinades. This is a casual restaurant where many local families dine. They accept most major credit cards. On weekends it’s a good idea to make a reservation ahead of time – especially if there are more than 2 of you. You can see their menu here (this is a chain so this link is for another restaurant of the same brand but I’m still sharing the link as the menu is in English. You can always take screenshots to help you order too) If a waiter asks you about nomihoudai that means “all you can drink” and if they say tabehoudai that means all you can eat – all you can eat for a certain amount of time is a common menu option at this type of restaurant.

You can also ask for a triple patty with sauce, no bun, bacon, avocado and cheese.    Just a warning incase you are very gluten sensitive – fries might not be a good idea as they reuse the oil between products.
