Shibuya Sumo Club opened Aug 1, 2026! Brand new!

I was invited to attend the pre-opening event and was delighted to see that it was so family-friendly. Children of any age can attend.

There are some other Sumo Show/Sumo Stable options in Tokyo but I like how accessible this is – and I like how the chanko nabe hot pot meal isn’t included. Chanko Nabe is the hot pot that sumo wrestlers eat everyday – it’s fun to try if you would like to -but it’s better to try it at a restaurant seperately and, by not having it as a part of the show here, it’s less pressure for families as I haven’t met too many international kids who actually like chanko nabe. Also, chanko nabe isn’t the kind of dish that can be easily customized to be vegetarian, vegan or gluten free etc – especially when made in bulk for something like a group show.

Why is Shibuya Sumo Club the best option for families?
-Much easier to get tickets than when seeing the real sumo
-Much more affordable than going to a real sumo tournament
-Kids can see the Sumo wrestlers close up, wrestle with them (if they volunteer to do so) and get photos too!
-There is no food included so kids aren’t pressured to eat a hot pot of chanko nabe (which usually means that parents have to buy a second meal for kids later anyway)
-It’s across the road from Yoyogi Station (on the Yamanote city loop line) and also a short taxi ride from Shinjuku.
Is Shibuya Sumo Club English-friendly?
Yes. Very. There is an MC (who kind of makes the entire show, actually) who explains the sumo rules in English and Japanese and even translates questions and answers so make sure your kids have their sumo related questions ready!
Can the kids easily see at Shibuya Sumo Club?
They really can. It is auditorium style seating but only a few rows each side and some seats at the very front on the floor too (for these you will need to remove your shoes so make sure you have easily slip on and off shoes on.

Yes. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
How long does the show at Shibuya Sumo Club go for?
1.5-2 hours.
Is Shibuya Sumo Club seasonal like the actual Sumo Tournaments?
No, This show is year-round- designed with tourists in mind.

Shibuya Sumo Club is just across the road from Yoyogi Station.
It is also walking distance (7 mins) from Takashimaya Times Square and a short taxi ride if you are staying in/visiting Shinjuku with kids.

Oreryu Shio Ramen (4 mins walk)
This is a karaage (fried chicken rice bowl), miso ramen and Tokotsu ramen. This ramen spot is better for older kids and they will love that they get to add their own spices and condiments.
