RYOGOKU AREA WITH KIDS

RYOGOKU AREA WITH KIDS

Ryogoku in Tokyo is mostly well-known for the Sumo Stadium.
It is about 20 mins on public transport to Nihonbashi, Akihabara and Asakusa Station.

For me, this is way too much of a no-man’s land to stay here with children (certainly not a pretty part of the city either.A bit grey and built up and not the most convenient. But I guess if you find the right hotel you can make it work. Still not my favourite place for families – still safe and still Tokyo – so that’s good! And if you haven’t been to Japan before you’ll still think it’s nice – convenience stores everywhere etc.) People who only have that to compare to and haven’t been to Tokyo before have been happy here. But if you are in the area for the Sumo, here are my family-friendly suggestions.  (Please bear with me as this blog post is currently a work in progress.)
I’ve had a handful of messages from families recently who enjoyed staying that Fav Ryogoku – but I haven’t stayed there yet and so can’t speak about it from personal experience.

WHERE TO EAT WITH KIDS IN THE RYOGOKU AREA?
Ryogoku Terrace is a beautiful Italian restaurant. They welcome kids and babies and also have room for strollers. You can take baby food here from outside the restaurant but it needs to be unopened. I recommend budgeting for 2000 yen per adult at lunch time and more like 4000 yen for dinner. They accept most major credit cards here. Ryogoku Terrace is 5 mins walk from Ryogoku Station (take the West Exit.) The entire restaurant is non-smoking.
See the full Ryogoku Terrace menu here.

Anchor Ryogoku Riverside looks over the Sumida River. They welcome children and babies. It’s kind of a fancy restaurant vibe. This restaurant has a breakfast, lunch AND dinner menu. Breakfast options include Eggs Benedict & French Toast. This restaurant is 3 mins walk from Ryogoku Station (take the West Exit.) They accept most major credit cards. This restaurant is a part of The Gate Hotel by Hulic in Ryogoku. I recommend budgeting (for an adult meal) 2000 yen for lunch time and 6000 yen at dinner time.

Nikujyu no Gyoza Dandadan Asakusabashi is a great place for gyoza. It is 600 metres from Ryogoku Station. They welcome children. I recommend budgeting for 1500 yen for a meal here. They accept most major credit cards here. They have an english menu and they also do takeout. The gyoza here are known for being really fat and juicy. See pictures of the menu at Nikujyu no Gyoza Dandadan here.

For a casual cafe for Omurice or Japanese Curry Rice, I recommend Little Yummy. I recommend ordering the “Daily Veg Omurice Japanese Curry”- it’s covered with colourful veggies.
They accept reservations or you could try for a walk-in (the cafe seats 20). Meals here are around 2000 yen per person. They accept most major credit cards. They have space for strollers here – no highchairs. See pictures of the Little Yummy menu here.

Gentamaru is a casual sushi restaurant just 1 min walk from the East Exit of Ryogoku Station.    This restaurant welcomes children at lunchtime (it gets a bit like an old man’s pub at dinner time so I wouldn’t recommend anyway.)    I recommend budgeting approximately 2000 yen per adult at lunchtime.   You can see pictures of the sushi omakase lunch sets on the Gentamaru website here.   There is not an English menu here so it’s best to point to the pictures on the menu.
If your child would rather eat cooked items you can ask for 唐揚げ (karaage) = fried chicken or ポテサラだ(potesarada) a Japanese potato salad.
This restaurant accepts credit cards at dinner time but lunch is cash only.
If you are visiting without kids in the evening, please be aware that there is a one drink minimum.
These guys are also on uber eats.
