RAINY DAYS IN KAWAGUCHIKO WITH KIDS

It’s such a pain if you’re in the Mt Fuji area for the Mt Fuji views but the weather has other ideas.

Here are my suggestions for things to do when stuck in the Kawaguchiko area on a wet weather day with kids:

1. Get back to that ryokan!
The universe is telling you to take in Japanese authentic lush country life today!
Read a book on the tatami. Have the slowest, longest kaiseki lunch you can! Get in the onsen and soak.
Here are my favourite places to stay with kids in the Lake Kawaguchi (aka Kawaguchiko) area.

2. Visit the Fujisan World Heritage Centre
You can even order the Fuji-san curry rice plate here!

3. Go to the Fujisan Shokupan Bakery to buy the Mt Fuji Bread!
It’s very blue and quite sweet but we still liked it ! Most photogenic sandwich ever!

4. Go to Syabu-Yo for all you can eat Shabu-Shabu and Sukiyaki
This chain of sukiyaki restaurants is one of our favourites. The restaurant is directly opposite Fuji-Q Highland. All you can eat veg and meat, dessert, rice, curry.

6. The Music Box “Music Forest” Museum
We’ve been here once and it’s charming and a bit kitsch. The kids seemed to like it too.

7, The Yamanashi Gem Museum
Okay.. so I haven’t been here yet but one of my readers says her son LOVED it here. Kids can dig for gems and rocks for 30 mins for 1100 yen (need cash.)

8. Okariba, Private Dining at an all day onsen
Okariba is a restaurant inside an all day onsen. No swimsuits allowed here but you could skip the bath part if you want to and just get changed into yukata and dine here as a family instead or you could just go for a meal. You will need to make a reservation for the family dining room. A little train brings you your food. Here is the full Okariba menu. Budget 3000 yen per adult.

9. Kipo Kipo
I haven’t been yet but so many of my readers have raved about the kids’ facility “Fuji’s Warm Forest Kipo Kipo”- this space is part treehouse/ community centre/ toy museum. It looks beautiful. Open 10am-3pm. 500 yen per adult to enter ( cash only.)
