OTHER COUNTRIES: MELBOURNE: BEFORE & AFTER VISITING THE REGENT THEATRE WITH KIDS

I have other articles on where to eat and visit with kids before going to Her Majesty’s Theatre, before seeing a show at the Princess Theatre and before visiting the National Theatre in St Kilda. This is my article on where to go with kids before seeing a show at The Regent Theatre.

Where do I park when seeing a show at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne with my kids?
If I take public transport, I find that getting off at the Collins Street Exit of Town Hall Station is easiest. When I park, I use either the Wilson’s Parking at Fed Square (put ACMI into google maps to get there easily – 8 mins walk to the Regent Theatre) OR the carpark at Wilson’s Flinders Gate (2 mins walk from the Regent Theatre.)

Where to go for a play with kids before seeing a show at the Regent Theatre?
Birrarung Marr Playground is just 10 mins walk from the theatre. This adventure playground is a good one too.

ACMI (Australia’s National Museum of Screen and Culture) located in Fed Square is 8 mins walk from the Regent Theatre.*Please note that it closes at 5pm so you’ll need to grab dinner in between ACMI closing and your show’s start time
This museum has a cinema and museum and many of the kid-friendly options are actually free!
My kids both love it here. You can walk here from Flinders Street Station in 2 mins or park at Fed Square or the Wilson’s Parking across the road. The gift shop here is also really good (lots of pop culture/tv related merch etc.)

Where to eat with kids before seeing at show at the Regent Theatre?
Kokoro, Take-Out Sushi (2 mins walk from the Regent Theatre)
If you just want to grab something quick to eat before a show I like this brand of takeaway sushi. It is on Swanston St- there is also a subway just a few doors down.

The Duke of Wellington (less than 5 mins walk from the Regent Theatre)
An aussie pub with good food and often sports on the big screen. They have vegetarian and gluten free meal options. See the full menu at The Duke of Wellington here. Book a table online here. All of the options on the kids’ menu are $17 and options include burgers, fish’n’chips, crumbed chicken, gnocchi, grilled chicken with mash.

Movida Next Door (5 mins walk from the Regent Theatre)

Vapiano Flinders Lane (8 mins walk from the Regent Theatre)
This is a lovely kid-friendly restaurant that has enough space to not feel the pressure to speak quietly all the time but also doesn’t feel too much like a “family restaurant” either.  The restaurant is big and there is even an outdoor terrace section that overlooks Flinders Lane. We call Vapiano (in Flinders Lane and Bourket St) our “Aussie version of Pizza Express” as the vibes are similar to Pizza Express in the UK.)

This one likes the Hawaiian pizza here too.

I also really like the brand new Vapiano on Bourke St (just on the Bourke St Mall opposite Myer and above Sportsgirl and Priceline. It’s so spacious in there and they do fab pizza making workshops for kids on school holidays. This one is 5 mins walk from the Regent Theatre.

Afloat (9 mins walk from the Regent Theatre)
Open September to June each year. I would avoid this place with kids on a Fri or Sat night after 6pm as it becomes a bit of a date/ meet up kind of vibe at those times – but it is also totally fine all other times with kids. You are sitting on the Yarra River and it’s the perfect place to watch the world go by. See the full Afloat menu here. Make a reservation online for Afloat here.

Go Boat Rental (Dock is 14 mins walk from the Regent Theatre)
I recommend packing a picnic and renting a putt-putt Goboat to drive along the Yarra as a family. This would be a cute thing to do as a family before a show at the Regent Theatre. The dock is 14 mins walk from The Regent Theatre.
You pick up your GoBoat from Banana Alley (along the river behind the far end of Flinders Street Station and not too far from Afloat.) It’s possible to rent a boat for 1 or 2 hours.

So excited to take a GoBoat as a family.
About to “set sail” on our GoBoat on the Yarra. All children 10 and younger need to wear life jackets.

We love renting a GoBoat as a family – we take drinks and dips and bread etc (there is a table in the middle of the boat.) You can also rent a speaker and an esky.

Spaghetti Tree (10 mins walk from The Regent Theatre)
A Melbourne institution.  Definitely need a booking to dine here – gosh its so iconic.   They have a kids menu but my kids also love eating adult portions here.
