OTHER COUNTRIES: MELBOURNE: WHERE TO TAKE KIDS BEFORE VISITING HER MAJESTY’S THEATRE

Where to eat and visit before a show at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne with kids?
Spaghetti Tree (details and pics below) – you’ll need to make a reservation as this place is a bit of an institution. 3 mins walk from the Theatre.
Spaghetti Tree is a Melbourne institution.  Definitely need a booking to dine here – gosh its so iconic.   They have a kids menu but my kids also love eating adult portions here.

Vapiano Bourke Street Mall for pizza and pasta. 9 mins walk from the theatre. This is a lovely kid-friendly restaurant that has enough space to not feel the pressure to speak quietly all the time but also doesn’t feel too much like a “family restaurant” either. It is just on the Bourke St Mall opposite Myer and above Sportsgirl and Priceline. It’s so spacious in there and they do fab pizza making workshops for kids on school holidays.

Vapiano. The kids’ pizza.
There is another Vapiano on Flinders Lane too – it has a lovely terrace section.

Guzman Y Gomez (7 mins walk from Her Majesty’s Theatre)
If you just want fast food / take out – Guzman Y Gomez in Collins Place is just 7 mins walk from Her Majesty’s Theatre. See the full Guzman & Gomez menu here.
The kids menu includes: Little G Burrito, Kids Nachos ,Kids Quesadillas, Kids Fries and Carrot discs

Chin Chin (9 mins walk from Her Majesty’s Theatre.)
You will definitely need a reservation here and it is the perfect spot for a special night or day as a family – especially if you are foodies. Make a reservation for Chin Chin online here. It is probably my top recommendation nearby if you are a family of foodies. This is not the best choice if your kids aren’t old enough to stay seated or quietly wait for dinner.

Movida Bar de Tapas (13 mins walk from Her Majesty’s Theatre.)
This tapas bar is really welcoming for families. It’s well known for good food so you will need to budget more than you would for a pub meal. They have vegan and gluten free options. It’s on the famous Hosier Lane – the one with all the graffiti – which is cool by the way but shorter than what you think so just worth a quick walk and a photo. You can then walk to Piccolina Gelateria for dessert.

Before the show you can visit Melbourne Central (13 mins walk from Her Majesty’s Theatre.)
*Melbourne Central is open for late night shopping until 9pm on Thursday and Friday nights*
As well as shopping you can also see a film, go bowling or visit the lego store. Food options include (skip the food courts they are so overcrowded) the Pancake Parlour, Melbourne Central Lion Hotel and many many others. My kids also like seeing the big clock (under the shot tower) as it has the Aussie animals appear on the hour every hour (take the escalator up afterwards to see the koalas on the back.)

The “Alice in Wonderland” pancake at the Pancake Parlour is always iconic (even as an adult.)

The Pancake Parlour has a kids menu as well as a full vegan menu and a gluten free menu.

The cheese and potato pancake is my favourite here at The Pancake Parlour. This is one of the options on the special summer menu – the menu that is half price when the temperature is higher than 25 degrees.
The Lego Store at Melbourne Central. This lego store looks over into the shot tower/clock area of Melbourne Central.

I like how they have a Lego Melbourne Tram.

Afterwards of beforehand you can also go across the road to the State Library. It’s so beautiful and they also have storytimes etc for kids.

See here for similar sorts of recommendations for when seeing a show at the National Theatre in Melbourne.

Little side note: Her Majesty’s Theatre is right next to Melbourne’s China Town. There is a food court right near the Her Majesty’s Theatre end of China Town and the food court is fine but DEFINITELY don’t take kids to the toilets at the food court here – they aren’t well maintained and are just smelly and dirty.

Where to park when visiting Her Majesty’s Theatre?
I usually park at the 24 Hour Paramount Centre Carpark (just next to the Elephant & Wheelbarrow Pub). It is 2 mins walk from Her Majesty’s Theatre.
