I love this area so much too – so central but you feel like you’re in the suburbs!

Centurion Classic Akasaka
They offer traditional Japanese style rooms. Private bathrooms and a bath with a shower.
Alternatively, if you book a “Luxury Corner Twin” you can get a room with two queen beds that you can push together to make one giant bed for the family, there is a balcony all the way around and a washing machine inside your own room !!!! The rooms here are really big.
The beds here are BIG! The room is MASSIVE! The area is amazing!
I also recommend their very big family rooms. So much space and lots of Tatami (in some of the room options) and even a massage chair in others! Some rooms even have their own little balconies! (don’t worry there are nice double locks so no need to worry about little ones walking onto the balcony when you’re not watching – the railings are also nice and high.)
The hotel has a 24 hour manned front desk with english speaking staff (this is great for sightseeing, logistical support – but also good if someone in your group fell ill – then the staff here can assist with medical attention.)

*Please note that there is another hotel called the Centurion Hotel Residential Akasaka that I don’t personally recommend for families. Please don’t let the two similar names confuse you.

SUPERMARKETS NEAR Centurion Classic Akasaka
My Basket is just 1 min walk away (when putting into google maps, copy and paste まいばすけっと赤坂３丁目店). Open 8am-11pm.
Maruetsu Petit is 5 mins walk away (this is the bigger supermarket.) It’s in the same building as the Harry Potter Cafe (I have a link to the reservation website for the Harry Potter Cafe here)- in the basement though. Open 7am-10pm. This supermarket has lots of ready-made meals and salads and bentos.

Just next door to Maruetsu Petit is a Crisp Salad Works branch. If you are there after 10am you could also get a salad to go from there. Crisp Salad Works have vegetarian, vegan, halan and gluten free options.
Seijo Ishii is also 5 mins away and is in the same building as Maruetsu Petit – even on the same floor. Open 8am-11pm (from 10am on weekends.) This supermarket has lots of ready-made meals and salads and bentos. *This supermarket stocks a rice flour bread made by a company called “Happy Bakery.”

PLACES TO SEE/VISIT IN AKASAKA WITH KIDS NEAR Centurion Classic Akasaka
Hie Shrine (3 mins walk)
Hie Shrine is in Akasaka and although it is small – it’s a great little stop-off if you’re in the area.
The Torii gates make for great photos too.
It’s 6 minutes in a cab from Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi ( or 20 minutes walk on foot – which is what we did. )
There are a lot of steep stairs ( although its not a hike or anything – still an inner city shrine) so, if you’re travelling with kids and a stroller , it could be a bit tricky.
There are restrooms in the main building.
If you wanted to be up to date on the shrine etiquette, their English page on the hie shrine website is pretty good.

Souvenirs & American Candy Shopping (3 mins walk from Centurion Classic Akasaka )
We like the brand “Plaza” for makeup, candy and some souvenir shopping. Lots of fun little novelty items. This one is called Plaza Newsstand. It is open 11am-8pm.
Bic Camera (5 mins walk from Centurion Classic Akasaka )
For shopping in Akasaka with kids, I recommend heading straight for Bic Camera above Akasaka-Mitsuke Station. The 8th floor is all toys and nintendo and bath bombs etc. Lots of lego and arcade games too.
Take the elevator or escalator – this building is less busy on weekends compared to weekdays.
Open 10am-10pm.
Also, while in Bic Camera, you may like to look for Nintendo Amiibo.
I must admit that I know NOTHING about Amiibo. However, my son always tells me that the Amibo selection in Japan is way better than other countries. If you are amiibo “shopping” then I recommend first going to your closest Yodobashi Camera or Bic Camera. Toys R Us Japan also has a good selection of Amiibo.
Also did you know that you can pop into the lobby of the hotel manned by robots? (5 mins walk from Centurion Classic Akasaka )
The lobby is on the second floor of the hotel so you’ll need to take the elevator. You can go check it out for a second even if you aren’t staying here. It’s a bit cheeky but , why not?!
There isn’t a lot to do than just say hi to the robots but … still …. it’s worth just taking a look.
If you think this is cool, you’ll also like the same brand of hotel out by Disneyland. The hotel is manned by dinosaurs.
These hotels are actually very very reasonably priced. Nothing fancy happens in the rooms but they are clean and new.
The only downside is that there are no humans to direct questions but if you’re happy to do your thing? This is a very economical option.

Team Lab Borderless (11 mins in a taxi or 20 mins by public transport)
Did you know that the new Team Lab Borderless is in the area? It is in the brand new Azabudai Hills Complex.
While you are there, you may want to also check out a bakery as it is the world’s first bakery for children. It is called Comme’N Kids. (There is a bakery for grownups next door but the kids one is extra cute as it has its own little “kids’ size” entrance.)

Also in the same building as Team Lab Borderless is a restaurant called Alchemy – a fabulous option if you love salads, fresh produce and/or you are gluten free or vegan. As stated on the Alchemy website – “All our food and products are free from meat, fish, egg, dairy, gluten, white sugar and chemicals.” This restaurant is originally from Bali. I recommend the tempeh protein bowl. Please be warned that this restaurant is very busy during high season (March-May) and on weekends. If you must visit on these dates, I recommend being here as the restaurant opens. They do accept reservations for 5pm onwards. If it is really busy, you can always get takeaway. The entire restaurant is non-smoking.
Here, you order a main dish (like raw pasta primavera or endomame zoodles) and or build you own salad – using options such as potato salad or kimchi. They also make their own fresh juice. See the full Alchemy menu here. They also have gluten free wine (some times of day have all you can drink packages.)
I recommend budgeting for approx 3000 yen per adult at lunch and 4000 yen at dinner. They accept most major credit cards. They welcome children here and are also happy for your to enter the restaurant with your stroller. This restaurant has free wifi.

I mean, champagne might not appeal to kiddies but it will to the Mummies and Daddies, right? And gyoza? That is for every body!!!! The seating is stools so would be hard with toddlers but find for kids that can sit alone.
This place is lovely and casual. Who would have thought that bubbles and dumplings could be such a yummy match?
There is just one guy behind the counter with a gigantic bucket of different champagne bottles and he cooks gyoza on the spot. I don’t know how he keeps up!
There are vegetarian gyoza options (but I don’t recommend if you’re a strict vegie as they are all cooked on the same hot plates.)

Umegaoka Sushi No Midori is in the Akasaka Biz Tower – connected to Akasaka Station. They have a kids’ menu (and an English menu too.) Budget 1500 yen per adult for lunch here and more like 4000 yen for dinner. They have high chairs. They also have space for strollers. You can also get takeout. They accept most major credit cards. The entire restaurant is non-smoking. Make a reservation if you plan on eating right at traditional lunch or dinner times. The kids’ plate is 1000 yen and has Salmon Sashimi, Boiled Shrimp, Salmon Roe, Rolled Japanese Omelette, Salmon & Cucumber Sushi Roll (no alternations can be made to the plate – it’s a set plate.) See pictures of some of the main menu here. The sashimi here is all directly from Toyosu Market.

Casual Italian (3 mins walk)
And 5 mins walk from Stand Shan Shoku Champagne & Gyoza Bar is casual Italian restaurant, Palermo. Palermo is also 2 mins walk from Subway Station Akasaka-Mitsuke. This restaurant welcomes children and has an English menu. This restaurant looks so casual but the food here is really good. This restaurant is non-smoking and they have free wifi. For kids, like mine, who love Pizza… there are four types here: Napoletana, Seafood, Four Cheese & Margherita.

Tsukiji Sushiko welcomes families. They have a kids menu here too (only sushi though so if your kids don’t eat sushi it’s best to go elsewhere. The kids plate has a few nigiri sushi, a few rolls with salmon or tuna inside, rice with cod roe on top and a few pieces of cooked egg.) This sushi restaurant accepts most major credit cards and is non-smoking. Lunch is approximately 2000 yen per person and I’d budget for 4000 yen per adult at dinner time. Here is the Tsukiji Sushiko individual sushi menu in English and Japanese. Here is the sushi set / sushi small platter menu for Tsukiji Sushiko. This is the Tsukiji Sushiko seafood rice bowl and sushi roll menu. This link leads to the side menu for Tsukiji Sushiko – includes salads and cooked fish. This izakaya specializes in beer, gyoza and “Shibuya style” yakisoba (Yakisoba served under potato salad, corn, onions and seaweed.) The beer is crazy cheer here – under 200 yen! They welcome kids. The restaurant seats 72 – so you can try for a walk-in but they also take reservations (with more than 2 children – or with particularly wriggly kids – I strongly recommend a reservation so you can have a table kind of to the side though.) I recommend budgeting for 3000 yen per adult if you’re having a meal here. The entire restaurant in non-smoking. You will like this place if you want a casual rowdy pub with the locals. Please note that some of the sashimi is horse sashimi and others are beef tongue or liver (just a heads up as I know that is not for everyone.) For kids, I recommend ordering edamame, dashimaki (Japanese omelette made with fish stock), fries, karaage (fried chicken), vanilla ice-cream with chocolate sauce. This is not the type of restaurant that will adjust to custom orders – I don’t recommend this place if you have specific dietary requirements.

For ramen or tsukemen for lunch or dinner with kids, I recommend Mendokoro Tomo Premium. This ramen/tsukemen restaurant is also 7 mins walk from Akasaka-Mitsuke Station.
In case you’ve never had tsukemen before, the noodles arrive to the table outside the broth/soup and you then dip them in the soup before eating. They also sell meat gyoza here. This casual restaurant has a place to store strollers while you dine. For lunch or dinner I would budget for approximately 2000 yen per person. They do accept credit cards here. They also have an English menu. Children and babies are welcome. They do take reservations but I would just go and, if busy, wait. If you are going to just share one person’s portion with a child – the polite thing to do is to ask if that’s ok to do so as you are entering the restaurant. They do have kid sized plates and cutlery.

And how about some Tonkatsu (Japanese crumbed and fried pork cutlets) for lunch?
Tonkatsu Sueyoshi welcomes families. This restaurant is also 3 mins walk from Akasaka Station (via Exit 1) or 6 mins walk from Akasaka-Mitsuke (Exit 11). Tonkatsu Sueyoshi first opened in 1977, The entire restaurant in non-smoking. Please note that this restaurant is cash only. Menu options include beautiful crunchy Tonkatsu with a cabbage salad, Tonkatsu sandwiches, Tonkatsu Oyakodon (Tonkatsu with cooked egg and green onions on rice), hamburger patty lunch plates, fried shrimp and fried oysters. All meals are between 1000-2000 yen here. It is polite to order at least 1 item for each number of people you are bringing into the restaurant (even if your child eats nothing and you just get two things for yourself.) You can make reservations here or just walk-in and wait your turn if it is busy. if you would like to make a reservation, it is best to ask your hotel to make a phone call on your behalf as this restaurant does not have a website.
Please have google translate on your phone for the menu (this makes it sound way more complicated than it is though as there really are only the menu items I have listed above.)
This restaurant has space for you to put a baby in a stroller next to you at the table (by removing a chair.)

Unagi-Don (Grilled and marinated Eel on Rice) – 2 mins walk
Or if you are keen to try Unagi-Don (Grilled and marinated Eel on Rice – it’s actually really good! Tastes kind of fatty but in a succulent way – am I making it sound awful?!) then I recommend going to Akasaka Fukinuki for lunch. This restaurant is also 3 mins from Akasaka Station and 4 mins walk from Akasaka-Mitsuke Station. For lunch here I would budget for 3000 yen per adult and more like 6000 yen at dinner time. They accept most major credit cards. The restaurant is non-smoking but there is a designated smoking section outside. Children and babies are welcome. There is space to store a stroller while you dine. Just a heads up, this is a hard place to come if one of you doesn’t want to eat Unagi. There isn’t too much else to choose from. They can do takeout bentos if that’s easier.

Or if you’re in the mood for something a bit more fancy, I recommend Teppanyaki Sato. It is also 5 mins walk from Akasaka Station (Exit 1) or 8 mins walk from Akasaka-Mitsuke Station.
I have written about how teppanyaki is probably different to what you are expecting here so please have a read before you make a reservation. For this restaurant you will need to budget around 12,000 yen per person. You wil definitely need to make a reservation here. It is cozy and cute and so yummy. It’s a really special place to eat at as a family.
They do accept credit cards here. Please note that there is a service charge of 500 yen for each person – and, just like in many Japanese restaurants, as a thank you for that service charge you will receive a small tapas size seasonal dish to try ( you don’t have to eat it if you don’t want to.) The entire restaurant is non-smoking. Children and babies are welcome (please let them know ages when you make the reservation.)
It’s a little bit hidden so leave time to go on a bit of a hunt for this place (with google maps in hand.)
It’s best to get your hotel to book this spot on your behalf.

Tsurumaru is casual but always popular for a reason. It is SOOOO good.
Read about Tsurumaru Akasaka on TripAdvisor here. The entire restaurant is non-smoking. Please note that this restaurant only accepts cash. The way to eat here – pick up a tray and use the tongs to choose any tempura you may like. Then order your main dish while paying at the register. This is a walk-in restaurant only. Warning: it is most popular with the office crowd between midday – 1:30pm.
The chairs here are mostly stool-type chairs so please be careful with toddlers perched on the top.
All meals here are under 1000 yen.

Big Echo (Akasaka-Mitsuke) is only 5 mins walk from The Centurion Classic Akasaka . Here are all of my tips on making Karaoke with kids the best best time ever!
Japanese Teishoku for lunch (7 mins in a taxi or 14 mins using public transport)
Or if you’re in Tokyo Midtown (department store) in Roppongi for lunch (or dinner) and want to eat beautiful Japanese food, I recommend Suju Dining Rokkaku.
Even if there is a queue, I recommend waiting around as, although it is popular, they are quick at lunch time to make sure they can seat everyone without having to wait too long.
The food is so reasonably priced and there is so much food in one lunch set. This restaurant cooks all its dishes in the style of and using mostly ingredients from Karuizawa ( a popular holiday spot just a few hours out of Tokyo.)
All lunch sets are less than 1800 yen. At dinner time I would budget for more like 8000 yen per adult.
They do have stroller parking and high chairs.

Another option in Midtown is Napule Italian Restaurant. Warning: this restaurant is very popular in cherry blossom and winter illumination season as they have terrace seating out the back which offers wonderful views during these times. So please make a reservation as soon as possible – click here for the reservation link. Please note that this restaurant only accept children of elementary school age or older.
It is more of a higher end restaurant so I would budget around 6500 yen per adult for lunch here and more like 10,000 yen at dinner time. It is worth it though as the food here is beautiful.

Another fabulous restaurant in the same complex (and if you sit on the terrace during the christmas season or cherry blossom season you can take in the amazing views of the park and lights) is Nirvana New York. This is an Indian Fusion restaurant. Babies and kids allowed and there is also space for strollers. This is the partner restaurant to the that of the same name in Central Park New York which opened in the 1970s. This is also a great space to dine with a large group or organise a private function. This restaurant offers some vegan dishes and some vegan courses (the vegan shishkebab is delicious!)
Lunch time is an all you can eat indian buffet for 3000 yen per adult! (a little cheaper on a weekday) and kids under 6 eat free!
Nirvana New York accept most major credit cards. This restaurant feels fancy but the prices are reasonable and the view is so lovely. They do take reservations.
At lunchtime I recommend budgeting for 3000-3500 yen per adult and at dinner more like 5000 yen.

Tempura Yamanoue is also inside Tokyo Midtown. This restaurant welcomes children and babies and also has space for strollers. Please note: that for safety reasons, children can only sit at table seating options – not at the counter. For this reason (among others) I recommend making a reservation.
I like to go here for lunch if it’s a special occassion- it is soooo good. The restaurant also has a nice view over the gardens next to Mid-town. This restaurant is entirely non-smoking. Tempura Yamanoue have an English menu. You can make a reservation online in English for Tempura Yamanoue here.
Budget for lunch is around 9,000 yen per adult and more like 25,000 yen at dinnertime.

And while you’re inside Midtown, if you’re looking for Japanese gifts and souvenirs, there is a beautiful gift shop on the 3rd floor. It is called Hashicho.
There are some bigger more expensive pieces but also smaller items like chopsticks etc. (There are also two more shops that stock Japanese gifts just a few shops down.)

And if you are at Tokyo Midtown between 11am-9pm, go to Green Dog & Cat on the second floor (its in the back section near all the restaurants and out facing the park out the back – near where they have the pop-up ice-skating rink at Christmas time) and check out the very very rich dogs and cats getting pampered at the salon!
Burgers (7 mins in a taxi or 14 mins using public transport)
Also in Midtown Roppongi is hamburger restaurant The Counter. My understanding is that it is the Tokyo branch of The Counter in LA – of the same name.
They have a vegan burger patty but the bread for the burger is make with eggs and milk – so I would call it a vegetarian burger instead. They accept reservations. When dining here I recommend budgeting 2000 yen for lunch and 3000 yen for dinner. They accept most major credit cards. This restaurant is non-smoking. See the full menu for The Counter Roppongi.

Wolfgang Puck in Akasaka is a lovely higher end pizza and pasta restaurant.
They have a kids menu & also highchairs.
Warning, there is a table charge of 350 yen per adult.
We also find this restaurant to be overpriced.

Steak & Seafood Restaurant -feels a bit fancy. (6 mins by taxi or 16 mins by public transport)
In the same complex, is Ruby Jack’s Seafood & Steak Restaurant.
The prices and vibes are very “special occasion” but they welcome children and babies. At dinner time, kids must be 6 or older (with the exception of Sundays and Public Holidays where they are welcome anytime.). There is a kids menu (a kids’ size hamburgers steak or burger with a dessert for 2200 yen) and space for strollers. Please note that every bill will have an additional 10% added as a service charge. At lunch time I recommend budgeting for 3000 yen per adult whereas more like 14,000 yen per person at dinner time. They accept most major credit cards. Best to make reservations here. And in the same complex, is a restaurant called Bubbys. Bubbys is an American restaurant and pie shop that originated in New York.
Bubbys is open for Brunch, Lunch and Dinner. To dine here I would budget around 2000 yen per adult. Bubbys accept most major credit cards and they do take reservations. The entire restaurant is non-smoking. They welcome children. This restaurant is less than 4 mins walk from Roppongi Itchome Station or 13 mins walk (or 6 mins/ approx 900 yen in a cab) from Akasaka Station.

*If you are strictly gluten free – before or after Robot Park – go to one of the restaurants at the nearby Grand Hyatt Tokyo, Roppongi, for a meal. They are great at assisting those who need a strictly gluten free meal.
Hinokichio Park (17 mins walk or 7 mins in a taxi)
Hinokicho Park is located right behind Tokyo Midtown department store is a large open park (Hinokicho Park) with a few pieces of playground equipment. There is also a pond and area to have a sit-down picnic. There are often art installations and special events held in certain sections of the park grounds. In the hot months, take a pair of swimmers and towel too – there is a little splash pad too (Down near the slide.)
This park is gorgeous about cherry blossom time.

SOME ADDITIONAL LOGISTICAL SUPPORT IN AKASAKA
Extra tip: If you arrive into Akasaka via subway station “Akasaka-Mitsuke” and you need an elevator for a stroller or suitcases, use the elevators inside Bic Camera electronics department store to help you get to the ground level.
