SHINAGAWA WITH KIDS

SHINAGAWA WITH KIDS

These are our favourite places to visit when visiting Shinagawa with kids.
Please be aware that this area is quite large and suggested spaces and restaurants can be a decent walk away from one another. So I recommend setting up a list of the places that interest you and then use google to plan your Shinagawa with kids strategy.

For breakfast, I highly recommend a visit to Breadworks (opens from 8am) and a walk along the river.  If you hang around a few more hours I also highly recommend the beautiful TY Harbor Brewery for brunch or lunch (I talk about it later in this post as a dinner suggestion.)
If you really like this bakery, there is another breadworks in Omotesando too.

BREADWORKS, TENNOZ

5 mins walk from Breadworks Tennoz, you can find Art Supply Store called Pigment Tokyo.
This beautiful store is also 3 mins walk from Tennozu Isle Station on the Rinkai Line.

Coffee & Cafe Chain store Pronto
Pronto at Shinagawa Takanawa (4 mins walk from the Takanawa Exit of Shinagawa Station) opens at 7am on weekdays. They are an easy place to grab a drink and a light and affordable breakfast with kids. The breakfast menu finishes up at 10am. See the Pronto breakfast menu here (all options are under 600 yen.) They accept most major credit cards. This cafe has free wifi.

A sit-down, western style breakfast
And if you’re craving a western breakfast,  I recommend Sarabeths.
It is a lovely western breakfast/brunch.
This is right above/in Shinagawa Station.
I’m from Melbourne, Australia, and, to me, this kind of breakfast is very very old school.  It was yummy and good quality but a bit like having breakfast out in the 80s.
The menu is on their website if you’d like to check ahead. My egg white and cheese omelette was delicious.
They do have high chairs for babies.
They also allow you to bring your own baby food into their restaurant.

SARABETHS, SHINAGAWA

In the same building as Sarabeths in Shinagawa is Blue Bottle Coffee –  great coffee for even the snobbiest of coffee snobs.  It’s on the 3rd Floor. Blue Bottle Coffee in Japan carries most of the milk alternative options.

And literally next to this coffee shop in Shinagawa Station is a pharmacy and a gourmet supermarket.  Not the cheapest but fantastic if you need some lovely fresh fruit and snacks for the road.

If your kids need a wriggle before or after breakfast, I recommend the green (well..greenish.. this is pretty built-up area but … it’s green-is) strip just near the station.
It’s called Shinagawa Central Garden (once again ‘Garden’ is a BIG call. )  It is a long green strip just near the station ‘s east exit.
It’s runs for a good ten minutes walk and is perfect for kiddies who need a run around or a place to eat lunch outdoors.
There are lots of restaurants along the outside of this park.  Including Starbucks and McDonalds too.

Vegan options at Japanese Starbucks include:
(Always need to double check in case they have changed the recipe at all, of course)
-the Sugar Donut
-the Mushroom Keema Curry Hot Tortilla
-the Banana Rice Flour Muffin
-the Blueberry Bagel Sandwich

Her favourite at Japanese Starbucks – a mango frappuccino.

Did you know that instead of fries at McDonald’s Japan you can order a side of edamame and corn. My daughter LOVES it!
A reader of my blog also gave me such an amazing suggestion – you can order a McDonald’s side salad and mix it with the edamame and corn to make a slightly heartier salad for under 600 yen!

Edamame & Corn from McDonalds in Japan

*side note: McDonald’s fries are not vegetarian/vegan – they are fried in beef fat.

It would also be a great spat for kids on scooters.

Another breakfast restaurant option is at Komeda’s Coffee just 400 metres from Shinagawa Seaside Station.
Breakfast is served from 7am-11am.  It is a simple breakfast plate with bread and jam (or just butter) a hard boiled egg and a small salad and around 600 yen. See pictures of the Komeda’s Coffee breakfast menu here.

A standard breakfast at Komeda’s Coffee. This particular breakfast is the morning set (approx 600 yen) + a side salad (280 yen) Photo taken by instagram.com/flying_foodlover

They are also a fabulous kid-friendly option for lunch and dinner.
They accept most major credit cards.  They are a walk-in only spot.
See pictures of the Komeda’s Coffee kids plate here.  All meals (adults and kids) are under 1000 yen.
My kids also love the desserts here.

My son’s soft serve ice-cream came out like this and we couldn’t stop laughing

The food menu here is mostly fried chicken, pasta, frankfurter sausages, burgers and pasta.

Takanawa Gateway is a new shopping and dining complex in Shinagawa

Takanawa Gateway Shopping Complex.

It has it’s own station and everything.
It’s a FABULOUS rainy day option in Shinagawa with kids. There is an indoor “garden” section and a rooftop area with free foot baths.
Throughout the shopping centre are lots of play areas for small children.
I recommend the baby centre on the 5th floor – so new and clean. Also on the 5th floor, a store called Nakagawa Masashichi – one of my FAVOURITE places to buy souvenirs in Japan.

Tiny pink daruma from Nakagawa Masashichi . Aren’t they adorable? These are from Nakagawa Masashichi .

In case you don’t know about Daruma – you draw the pupil on the Daruma’s left eye when you set a goal (that’s the right eye if you’re looking at it) and then add the other pupil once the goal has been achieved. These makes for fabulous presents for adults and children.
These bowls from Nakagawa Masashichi are just too beautiful!
A cat themed Kokeshi doll from Nakagawa Masashichi.
This wooden onigiri (rice ball) shaped baby teether is the perfect souvenir to gift a friend who has just had a baby. Iconic, simple and beautiful. This is from Nakagawa Masashichi.

I love how each floor has a little play area like this for babies and toddlers.

The play spaces for toddlers and babies within the Takanawa Gateway Shopping Complex in Shinagawa.

It’s also worth visiting just to try out a “standing taxi!! (a people mover robot!) I have a video of one here.

I love the Book Cafe Park bookstore/cafe within this complex too. So relaxing and the children’s section is so beautiful and many of the options make for lovely keepsakes.

These Japanese board books are so cute. Book Cafe Park, Shinagawa.

My recommended kid-friendly restaurants inside the Link Pillar 1 / Newoman section of the Takanawa Gateway complex in Shinagawa, Tokyo:

800 Degrees Pizza

Budget 3000 yen per adult for lunch and 6000 yen at dinner time. Please note that there is a 330 yen charge per person when dining here at dinner time. You can sit indoors or out on the terrace. Kids and babies welcome. The entire restaurant is non-smoking. Make a reservation online for 800 Degrees Pizza here. Adults can also try sake here.

800 degrees pizza

Tooth Tooth Bistro & Cafe
I LOVE this restaurant – it’s a branch of a Kobe restaurant. The food is fresh and so good and they are well known for their desserts and crepes. Make a reservation. They have space for strollers. See the full Tooth Tooth lunch menu here. See the full Tooth Tooth dinner menu here. They have one vegan dish. They accept most major credit cards. Budget 3000 yen per adult at lunch time and more like 6000 yen for dinner.

Wolfgang’s Steakhouse
This is a fancy spot for food but they welcome children and babies and also have space for strollers. See pictures of the Wolfgang’s Steakhouse menu here. Dress code: no sandals and no men with sleeveless shirts (my advice : it’s just best to have everyone dressed nicely with closed toe shoes to be safe.) Budget 3000 yen per adult at lunch time and more like 25,000 yen at dinner. There is a service charge of 10% added to the bill at the end of the meal. This restaurant is on the 29th floor so the view is also beautiful. If dining here with children you must make a reservation ahead of time. Make a reservation for Wolfgang’s Steakhouse Takanawa here.

On the ground floor of this same complex is a Seijo Ishii supermarket. Open 10am-9pm.
Seijo Ishii is my favourite brand of supermarket in Tokyo. I like them because they have lots of international options and a pretty decent selection of cheese (for Japan.)  I also like their deli section as it is filled mini pizzas and pre-cooked chicken and some salads.  These are all great options for making a quick and easy meal if you’re staying at an apartment hotel with a kitchenette.  They sell pesto in the pasta section too so I often buy pasta, raw chicken, pesto and cream and make a simple chicken pesto pasta. Seijo Ishii supermarkets also stock gluten free bread.  *This supermarket stocks a rice flour bread made by a company called “Happy Bakery.”

An example of veggies sold at Seijo Ishii Supermarket
Examples of cheese sold at Seijo Ishii
Seijo Ishii bentos, sandwiches and sushi.

You can use google translate while you’re there but to give you an idea of what is on offer:

Top shelf:
Tuna & Spring Onion Sushi Handrolls, Ham & Egg Sandwiches, Cooked Shrimp & Brocolli Sandwiches, Mixed Veg Sandwiches, Colourful Veg Sandwiches ± a range of salads (sorry I can’t read the labels in the pic)

*Dressings for salads are sold seperately – get the sesame dressing . Trust me!
Second shelf; Corn & Locally Sourced Colourful Veg Salad, Locally Sourced Green Veg Salad (sold out in this pic), Vermicelli Salad made with Okinawaーgrown Mozuku Seaweed, Burdock Root, Carrot, Sesame Mayo Salad, Crab & Quinoa Coleslaw Salad, (Can’t read this one in the pic- sorry!), Seafood Pasta Salad, (Can’t read the rest of the salad labels here -sorry!)

Second from bottom shelf:
Green & Yellow Veg Duck Salad, Quinoa & Walnut Ingredient Grain Salad, Chicken & Quinoa Salad with Olive Oil Dressing, (can’t see the other salad labels here – sorry!)

Bottom shelf:
Taco Meat Tortilla Wraps, Mixed Tortilla Wrap Pack with Ham & Egg and Cheese & Chicken, Yakiniku Beef & Root Veg Tortilla Wraps, Shrimp Fresh Spring Rolls with Coriander, Steamed Chicken & Egg Salad Spring Rolls, Salmon & Cheese Spring Rolls with Coriander, Shrimp & Steamed Chicken Spring Rolls, Smoked Salmon &Avocado Spring Rolls, Potato Salad.
As you can see here, lots of the potato chip brands will be quite familiar to many and this can be handy if you have fussy eaters.

See all of my tips on shopping at Japanese supermarkets here.

If you are looking for decent coffee in Shinagawa , Verve Coffee Roasters (open from 7am) and Blue Bottle Coffee (open from 11am) are in the same building.

Moving away from the Shopping Complex….
The large Maxwell Park Shinagawa Aquarium is 5 mins walk from Shinagawa Station. It is called Maxwell Aqua Park and I have written about it in detail here.

The Maxwell Park aquarium in Shinagawa.

Is it wrong to eat sushi right after the aquarium?
Just 10 minutes walk from the Konan Exit of Shinagawa Station via the “Skyway” (overhead walkway) is the Kura Sushi sushi train restaurant.  It’s open 11am-11pm.  I’d budget for approx 1500 yen per adult for lunch or dinner.  Kurasushi accepts most major credit cards, offers takeaway and is a smoke-free restaurant.  Kurasushi have a list of all of their food with common allergens here. (Kurasushi is great when dining with kids and there are lots of cooked non-raw sushi options but if you really love sushi you may be a little disappointed with the raw-fish quality / some have found that the fish meat is a bit frozen in the middle.  See here for my tips on what to do in Japan if your kids like to eat westernized versions of sushi or california rolls etc.) For sushi train options in Japan – Kura Sushi definitely has the most gluten free options (you can even put a filter on the ipad menu to see what is an option for you.)
If you are looking for vegan Kura Sushi options, go or the mango, pineapple or cucumber maki options.

Kura Sushi. Sushi, Fried Corn, Strawberry Chuhai Cocktail, Sushi Wrap

Not far from the aquarium is the Wing Takanawa West Shopping Complex ( right across the road from Shinagawa Station.)
If looking for somewhere to eat with children within this complex, I recommend the Italian /Mozzarella Bar restaurant Obica  (several of these restaurants can be found all over Japan.)  It is located on the ground floor.   Please note that there is a 500 yen table service charge ( not charged at lunch time.)  The entire restaurant is non-smoking.  There is an English menu and a kids menu.

Seria is my favourite 100 yen store. Can you believe these cups and plates are only 100 yen each?

My little boy bought this stash of goodies at my favourite brand of 100 yen store “Seria” recently. Bath Bombs, Disney socks, Kirby stickers and ice pack for his lunchbox, a pepsi cup.

Izakaya
Another great family friendly option in the same complex is an izakaya called Washoku En Shinagawa Takanawa Wing.    Like most izakaya in Japan, the idea is that you order lots of little dishes and try lots of little things and then order more as you go, if you wanted to.   This is a wonderful place for adults to try Japanese sake (hot and cold) or lemon sours etc while still dining as a family.   I recommend budgeting for 2000 yen per adult here at lunch time and more like 5000 yen at dinner time.
The entire restaurant is non-smoking and they do accept most major credit cards.
You can ask you hotel to make a reservation for you or you could try for a walk-in (I only recommend attempting this before 7pm.)

Tacos
Also in the Wing Takanawa Complex is a tacos restaurant called Wired Tacos Club. This restaurant has a number of vegan options too (Soy Meat Eggplant Bolognese, Pickles, Crazy Potatoes (curly fries), Tortilla Chips with Salad.). It’s very casual and family friendly. The restaurant seats 100 so I think it is worth risking a walk-in. The accept most major credit cards. They have Japanese craft beer as well as Corona. The entire restaurant is non-smoking. I recommend budgeting 2000 yen per adult to dine here for lunch and more like 4000 yen for dinner. See the Wired Tacos Club menu here. This is a great way to get lots of veggies into kids – as theyre are menu options like an Avocado and Kidney Bean Mexican Salad, Vegan Meat Taco Rice Bowl, Salmon and Avocado Poke Bowl. They also have lots of desserts. It is 3 mins walk from Shinagawa Station. The restaurant is non-smoking.

Izakaya & Yakitori
Kagoshima-ken Kirishima-shi Tsukada Nojo
is an izakaya with meat dishes and yakitori. They welcome kids. It is 3 mins walk from the Takanawa Exit of Shinagawa Station. The mood in here is casual and vibey – lots of locals having drinks after work. They accept most major credit cards. Budget approx 4000 yen per adult for a meal here. There is a 495 yen charge per person when dining here ( you will receive an otoshi appetiser of the day when you sit down too – if you don’t want to eat it, that’s so fine, just don’t hand it back – just keep it on the table.) This restaurant is non-smoking. This is a great place for adults in the group to try hot and cold sake.
Like most izakaya in Japan, the idea is you order a few dishes for the table to share and then, order again if you like them or keep ordering something different (no need to order everything you want to eat at the start of the meal.) Ask your hotel to make a reservation on your behalf and you can book to sit at the counter, table, horigotatsu or a private room (if you have small kids they may ask you to book a private room.) See pictures of the menu for Tsukada Nojo here (use google translate for the descriptions).
I recommend ordering the Fried Enoki Mushroom and Bacon Caesar Salad, Sadowara Eggplant Grilled with Butter Soy Sauce, the Homemade Tartare Teritama (teriyaki and egg) Snack Pizza, Garlic Chives and Egg Okonomiyaki and the soft boiled egg Tsukadama Potato Salad. For the fussier eaters, they have fries, sweet potato fries and fried rice.

Sashimi and Seafood Izakaya
Yonpachi Gyojo
is such a good izakaya to try with kids (if everyone likes seafood – but they do have fried chicken), of course. They welcome kids. It is 3 mins walk from the Takanawa Exit from Shinagawa Station. Budget approximately 5000 yen per adult to dine here. They accept most major credit cards. This restaurant is non-smoking. Ask your hotel to make a reservation on your behalf and request a tatami room, horigotatsu seating or counter seating. This is a great place for the adults in the group to try hot or cold sake. I recommend ordering the sashimi tatami platter, dashi-maki tamago (rolled omelette), the seasonal green vegetable salad. For the pickier eaters, there is also fried chicken and yakisoba – ask for the yakisoba without the raw egg on top if that doesn’t appeal. They have fries but they are sprinkled with bonito and seaweed flakes. They also have scoops of Hokkaido milk ice-cream for dessert.

“Australian” Steak and Seafood
Hate to break the hearts of Americans that love the Outback Steakhouse – but it isn’t even a little bit “Australian” to me.  I am partial to a “bloomin’ onion” from here though. The portions are generous and it’s very kid friendly.  This is also in the Keikyu Shopping Plaza – on the B1 floor.   They welcome children- they have a kids menu and space to store strollers while you dine.  Please note that a 10% service charge is added to your bill when you dine here.  They do accept most major credit cards. I recommend budgeting 2000 yen for an adult lunch meal and more like 4000 yen at dinner time. This restaurant is completely non-smoking. See the full Outback Steakhouse menu here.

 400C Pizza Shinagawa
Many people agree with me that this restaurant has some of the best pizza they have ever eaten (even the New Yorkers agree!) This restaurant is called 400C Pizza Shinagawa. They take reservations. Budget 4500 yen per person. The entire restaurant is non-smoking. This restaurant welcomes children who are 6 years and older. This restaurant is 6 mins walk from the Shinagawa Station Takanawa Exit. They only accept card payments here (no cash.)

Modern Mexican

And a beautiful luncthime option for families right next to the station is El Caliente.  The cuisine is “Modern Mexican.”
Please note that this restaurant only allows kids under 6 years of age at lunchtime on weekdays.  You can make reservations in English via their website.
At lunchtime I would budget around 2000 yen per adult and 5000 yen for dinner.    You can see the El Caliente entire lunch menu here.
This restaurant has an English menu and accepts most major credit cards. The entire venue is non-smoking.
This place feels quite “special occasion” so, if your kids aren’t great at staying in their seats for a meal – then maybe give it a miss until they are a bit older.
Please note that this restaurant charges 220 yen per person as a service charge on weekends and national holidays between 11:30am-5pm.  There is also a daily service charge for all diners who visit after 5pm of 440 yen.  There is also a 10% additional charge on top of your bill if you dine after 10pm.

*Random recommendation for while you’re in this Atre Shinagawa complex, on the 2nd floor is a shoe store called “Oriental Traffic.” If you have big feet like me (I have size EU40-41 feet) this might help if you need some women’s footwear as this is one of the few shops that stock the LL sizes.

Oriental Traffic is one of the few shoe stores in Japan that I can buy LL sized shoes.
This sign in the picture was for during a sale where you could buy two pairs of shoes for 11,000 yen. This is the Oriental Traffic Ueno Store pictured here.

Please see my article here on how to go about making a reservation for a restaurant in Japan when the website doesn’t have an English website option.

Ty Harbor Brewery is a beautiful waterfront restaurant in the Shinagawa area.  There is lots of outdoor seating and a very family friendly menu.  It is also extremely English-friendly.  It’s also a lovely spot for a date night or an outdoor brunch.

Then there is the Dinosaur Park (Kodomo no Mori) which is 8 mins (approx 800 yen) in a cab from Shinagawa Station OR you can take a 3 min train ride to Shimbamba Station and then walk for 7 mins. It’s quite small but my kids absolutely love coming here and then it’s always hard to get them to leave (!!) I’ve written about and included lots of pictures in my blog post on the Dinosaur Park in Shinagawa here.

Happoen Japanese Garden
Also a little bit outside of this area – this beautiful garden, Happoen is just 8 minutes from Shinagawa Station by taxi ( approx 1600 yen) or 23 minutes on foot.
Happo-en is our favourite ‘hidden’ Japanese garden.  It’s a famous wedding and shichigosan (children’s coming of age ceremony) venue and is open early in the morning. Entrance to the garden is free and there is a bakery/cafe (with the unfortunate name of “Thrush” ) for breakfast, tea time and lunch.  This restaurant is also recommended on the Halal in Japan website.
I’ve written about visiting Happoen with kids in detail here.

Another option (that also isn’t exactly “just around the corner” but could be a hop, step and jump or a nice walk while a child sleeps in a stroller) for a follow-on activity is Futo Park.
This Futo neighborhood playground is :
– 4 mins walk from Shibaura-Futo Station
– 9 mins ( approx 1000 yen) in a cab from Shinagawa Station or 30 mins on foot
– 5 mins ( approx 600 yen) in a cab from JR Tamachi Station or 14 mins on foot
– 8 mins (approx 800 yen) in a cab from Mita Station or 15 mins on foot
I have written about Futo Park & Playground in detail here.

Also 15 minutes in a cab (approx 1800 yen) from Shinagawa Station is Shinmei Children’s Playground …also known as the Octopus Park.
I’ve written in detail about Shinmei Children’s Playground here.

The across the road from the Octopus Park is Shinagawa Chuo Park (Extension section)  The majority of the park is taken up by a helipad which makes for an excellent spot for scooter and bike-riding practice . On the edge of the park is a little bakery as well called Petit Reve.  And down the other end? A big adventure playground.   This playground also doesn’t have any shade so you might want to avoid it in Summer.   Restrooms are next to the helipad.

And then another 5 minutes away (on foot) is another little playground called Soyokaze Park.  Its small ..but if you’re looking for an extra play spot – this suburban playground has swings, slides, a little sandpit, a moomin bouncer and public restrooms.

SOYOKAZE PARK
品川区西品川2-17-8
2-17-8 NISHISHINAGAWA, SHINAGAWA-KU

Then there is Honshiba Park.  It is 8 minutes from Shinagawa Station by car (approx 1200 yen) or 33 minutes on foot. You could also take the subway for a 5 minute trip to Mita Station from Shinagawa, although you will need to transfer once (and at this time I’m unable to confirm if there are elevators for strollers etc.)
I’ve written about Hoshiba Park with kids here.
It’s a little, thin, long park with a play area, a great view of the train tracks and a water splash area in Summer.

For dinner ( or lunch) there is a Wolfgang Puck restaurant. Near the Konan Exit.
They have a kids menu & also highchairs.
There is a 350 yen table charge per adult.  Warning: we do find this restaurant to be overpriced.

A family-friendly izakaya where every single table has it’s own private booth/room
Jibundoki Shinagawa Konan Guchi is a great izakaya to eat at in Japan with kids ( or with girlfriends for a catch up, actually.)  YOU MUST MAKE A RESERVATION AHEAD OF TIME IF DINING HERE WITH CHILDREN.
This izakaya specialises in general izakaya foods but also does tempura beautifully.  Every single table has a private room/booth – which really takes off the pressure for kids to sit still the whole time and it also means they could quietly colour or do a puzzle or play nintendo with the sound turned down.  The doors are slider doors that are opened frequently to serve food, so I recommend sitting kids on the far side and put adults next to the door.
Like most izakaya in Japan, the idea is that you order lots of little dishes and keep on ordering as you go (more of the same or to try something else.)
They accept most major credit cards.  I recommend budgeting approximately 4000 yen per adult to dine here.
This is also a wonderful restaurant for adults to try hot or cold sake or different flavours of sours (sake with soft drink mixers) while still dining with the family.
There are some booths/rooms that do allow smoking so please ask your hotel to ask for one far away when you get them to make a reservation on your behalf.
This izakaya is 3 mins walk from Shinagawa Station.

I love eating tempura with flavoured salt instead of marinade. It doesn’t make the tempura go soggy.
Jibundoki .
I ordered the potato fries, assorted tempura plate of the day, assorted sashimi plate of the day.
This is a shoes-off restaurant. At the entrance, remove your shoes just before this little step and step straight from your shoes onto the raised carpet section. Then lift up your shoes and place them in one of the shoe lockers.
Each table has it’s own “koshitsu” (private room/booth). This makes it perfect for families too.
If you have a larger group you’ll be given a larger booth – of course though, the bigger the group the more important it is to make a reservation.
Jibundoki.  You order by pressing a buzzer on the table.
Each “booth/room” has it’s own hangers where you can hang your jackets.
This is at Jibundoki.
