Maxwell Aqua Park Shinagawa is, without a doubt,  the most well-known kiddie spot in the Shinagawa area.   Not all, but some bigger aquariums are in Japan are displayed so beautifully – a real “art meets sea creatures and light” kind of feel.  This is one of them. In fact, throughout the year they dedicate different periods of time to different light up displays so it’s worth checking their website frequently.

It is 2 mins walk from the Takanawa Exit of Shinagawa Station.
It’s a very decent size and we can easily spend 3-4 hours here.   My kiddies love the “Under the Sea” themed carousel near the entrance (500 yen per ride), all of the touchy-feely screen exhibits and the dolphin show.
They also love buying vending machine ice-cream cones just near the dolphin arena too.  My favourite? The jellyfish room -it’s like an psychedelic art installation!

I’m not really a fan of the outdoor shows – little penguins and seals on leads made to perform makes me feel a bit icky but .. it’s your call…

Upon entering, the staff ask to take your picture and you can choose whether or not to buy it.  (I’m always a sucker for a picture that I didn’t take.) Even if you don’t pay for a big copy – they still hand over a small version as a freebie.

*Note: the Aquarium allows pass outs so you can leave, go for lunch and come back.   Close by options include TGI Fridays – it has a kids’ menu.

If you live in Japan it may be worth considering an aquarium yearly pass as, last time I checked, you need to visit more than twice to make it worth your money.
