GLUTEN-FREE FRIENDLY HOTELS IN TOKYO

GLUTEN-FREE FRIENDLY HOTELS IN TOKYO

In all of my hotel guides and recommendations I make sure I point out if the hotel has good gluten free options – but I thought I would make a list of Tokyo hotels that are especially gluten-free friendly.

I also recommend looking at apartment style hotels likeMimaru or &Here first – as you will have a kitchen and don’t have to worry about cross contamination at all.

Here are all of my tips on how to best prepare for visiting Japan with allergies or as a gluten free visitor.
See here for my list of restaurants for families that also cater to gluten free diners.

SHIBUYA
Hotel Indigo Shibuya
This hotel is in such an amazing location.  Right in the heart of Shibuya.  So many restaurants right outside the door and a short walk to the crossing. Most rooms only accommodate two people but they do have connecting rooms and some rooms have space for rollaway bed too!
They have daily housekeeping and two restaurants within the hotel.  They also have a in-house fitness centre.   The City Bakery is within the building.
This is a fabulous option for families with two teens and need connecting rooms – this hotel is like a beautiful Oasis right in the heart of the city. The service is incredible and one other cool thing? Ramen is a part of the breakfast buffet ! (there is also an option to order a la carte too.). This hotel has a wonderful selection of gluten free options at breakfast and the staff are very accommodating to the needs of gluten free guests.

Hotel Indigo Shibuya

Shibuya Tokyu Rei Hotel
This is the most modest and most affordable of my Shibuya hotel recommendations. Tokyu Rei in Shibuya is 2 mins walk from Shibuya Station. If arriving on the Metro (subway) take exit B2. The rooms here are simple, modern and clean. Rooms accommodate 1-3 people (ask for two rooms next to one another if booking for you and teenagers.)   The hotel has it’s own breakfast restaurant and children under 6 eat free.  (I recommend trying the curry bread on the breakfast buffet!)
This Shibuya hotel is particularly accommodating if you are gluten free ( best to email them in advance to let them know and bring a printed out dietary requirements card to the restaurant.)

See here for my family-friendly recommendations in Shibuya (including shopping, restaurants and playgrounds.)

GINZA & THE TOKYO STATION AREA
Conrad Tokyo
This is a higher price point  – a gorgeous 5 star hotel.
This hotel is also very good with gluten-free diners/guests.  Rooms sleep 2-3 people.  This is an excellent place to stay if you are gluten free – you can even order the most beautifully wrapped and presented completely gluten free bentos to enjoy on the bullet train – how amazing is that?!

Hyatt Centric
This hotel is gorgeous !  Every floor has a different touch that reflects the fact that Ginza was, originally, a district for textiles shopping. Also, the hotel premises used to be a newspaper printing building and every details of the lobby and front reception reflects this.  The service, facilities and room interiors are all  absolutely flawless.
The bars and restaurants (including breakfast) are out of this world. They can deal with allergies, high chairs… everything. These guys will look after you. They even host gluten free high teas at different times of the year.

My breakfast plate after picking my faves from the breakfast buffet at Hyatt Centric.

Please note that this hotel is only suitable for a couple and a baby OR a couple and and a baby and a toddler who will share bedding with parents.
This hotel has lots of eateries and the metro close by. The staff speak English well.  There is also a complimentary drink hour for guests in the evenings.
This hotel accommodates couples + a baby or a child who is young enough to bedshare.

ROPPONGI
The Pullman Tamachi (10 mins by car from Roppongi)
The Pullman Tamachi have been known to be good for gluten free guests but I’ve heard some mixed reviews on how the gluten free breakfast isn’t as delicious as many people might have hoped. Make sure to send the hotel an email if you are gluten free (before checking in) so they can make sure the breakfast buffet has lots of yummy options for you. THey have gluten free croissants and other breakfast items. The lunch and dinner menu includes some gluten free pasta options too. There is a Life Supermarket nearby which also sells gluten free pastries. *Life Supermarkets have an allergy section with options such as a gluten free version of kewpie mayonnaise. Rooms here sleep 1-2 adults (+ a child if the child is young enough to bed share.)

Grand Hyatt Tokyo, Roppongi
I don’t often recommend the big brands but the location for young families and facilities at this hotel are fantastic.  The breakfast and brunch restaurant has outdoor seating and we often just visit for meals too. This hotel is excellent if you require gluten free food -whether you’re in the regular restaurant or have club lounge access (best to let them know in advance when you make your hotel reservation.) I have stayed here a few times. The rooms are lovely but no different to any other Grand Hyatt out there. If you stay here? Stay for the beautiful facilities, assistance with baggage and restaurant reservations and tourist info etc … also the airport limousine bus stops right here. The Grand Hyatt in Roppongi pool allows children between 5-15 years of age between 9am-7pm. If you bed share with two small kids ( thats what we do but I know its not for everyone) you can manage with the gorgeous twin rooms but otherwise you will need to look at the suites. Literally across the road is the Robot playground in Roppongi mentioned in detail here.

The Robot Park is just across the road from this hotel.
More details on the Robot Park in Roppongi here.

TORANOMON HILLS
The Andaz is a high end hotel and they are fabulous at catering to guests with special dietary requirements.

SHINAGAWA
This area can be a bit sterile but it is handy to be so close to Shinagawa Station as it is a bullet train stop.

This hotel is accommodating for gluten free guests. Please email then ahead of time.

EBISU & MEGURO
The Westin Tokyo is located in Ebisu ( 4 min in a cab from Ebisu Station) and they are excellent for providing gluten free breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

SHINJUKU
Shinjuku is my least favourite place to stay in Tokyo with children – I explain more here – but if you do want to be in this area AND you are gluten free … here are some good options.

Hilton Shinjuku
If you have points to spend at a Hilton (American readers of mine are often obsessed with points but remember that many of these brands aren’t always in the spots with the best child-friendly options) , I have stayed at the Hilton in Shinjuku.  I do find it quite hard to get around with small children from this hotel ( 6 mins on the subway from Shinjuku Station, 16 mins walk, 6 mins – approx 1000 yen- in a cab) but their buffet breakfast and customer service is, of course, fantastic.
The Hilton Shinjuku also are very good at catering to guests who are Gluten Free – great gluten free bread, and they can make fried rice upon request at breakfast time. They also have gluten free rolls on the breakfast buffet. The room service menu can almost all be made gluten free upon request and fries and hamburgers can be prepared and cooked separately to other dishes.

The Knot, Shinjuku
While it is a bit of a walk from the JR Station, I’ve stayed at The Knot, Shinjuku and enjoyed it. The rooms are tiny but the lobby, restaurant and bakery are all very good and conjuctive to meeting other travellers. I’ve written in more detail and included pictures of The Knot Shinjuku here.  If you have small children, the park and playground across the road is also very good.  The Knot, Shinjuku also has a Terrace Suite room which sleeps 2-6 people. The ground floor of The Knot is also the home to More Than – a bakery with lots of vegan and some gluten free options.

The lobby at The Knot, Shinjuku

Hotel Gracery is proabably one of the most famous hotels in Japan for families as it is the Godzilla hotel. The area is a bit shady with kids but it’s also touristy enough to get by.  If you book here, try and get a Godzilla themed room or an option with a Godzilla statue view! There is a breakfast restaurant called “Sakura” within the hotel and there is a 7-Eleven right near the ground floor entrance.  The triple rooms here are a little small with not much room to do more than sleep soI don’t recommend it for active little children.  It is in the red-light district of Shinjuku called Kabuki-cho and, while that isn’t dangerous for you, the bright lights outside of your hotel room window will make you want to shut your curtains tight.
The breakfast buffet here has a small number of gluten free options.

ASAKUSA
Asakusa View Hotel Annex Roku have allergens clearly marked on their breakfast menu (options include fruit and eggs.)
There are a good number of gluten free dining options in the immediate area – see my full list here.

OUT NEAR TOKYO DISNEYLAND & TOKYO DISNEYSEA
Hilton Tokyo Bay
If you’re looking for gluten free options at Hilton Tokyo Bay, their Accendo restaurant has a gluten free pasta with a tomato based sauce or a cream based sauce and is served with gluten free bread. The breakfast buffet at Hilton Tokyo Bay also has all of their gluten free items (and other allergens) clearly labelled. The staff here are lovely when it comes to dietary restrictions.
Indoor and Outdoor Pools ( please note that pool fees are not necessarily covered in your room package. This is, unfortunately, quite common in Japan – see here for more information.)   Complimentary Shuttle to the Tokyo Disney Resort Line.  Guaranteed park admission for hotel guests.  There is also a shuttle to the airport (additional charge.)
Before you book a hotel with a pool (including the disney hotels) please read this as Japan has some really strange rules and timelines for swimming pools.
There is a Lawson convenience store within the hotel and they sell nappies and baby food.
Sometimes the sales/ low season prices can be as low as 100 US dollars a night for a twin room.  Their suites can accommodate up to 6 adults.
BEFORE YOU BOOK HERE!  They have strict reals about kids under 10 NOT using the top bunk beds (they will ask for ages at check in and there are signs all over the bunk beds saying so too.) If you have kids under 10 – best to NOT choose a room with bunks.
The whole hotel is quite dated but is comfortable and has everything you need.
The Hilton Tokyo Bay has cots for children who are less than 24 months.  See an image on their website here for the cribs at the Hilton Tokyo Bay.

ANOTHER SUGGESTION FOR ENSURING ACCESS TO LOTS OF GLUTEN FREE FOOD WHILE STAYING IN JAPAN
If you choose an apartment style hotel with a kitchenette and a manned front desk  – did you know that can have different types of milk and gluten free and vegan options delivered anywhere in Japan via the  National Azabu website?  This international supermarket is located in Hiroo, Tokyo (you can also, of course, visit in person).  You can also order online and have them deliver groceries to you if you are staying in Minato-ku, Tokyo  (aka the Minato ward, Tokyo) OR you canhave these items delivered anywhere in Japan using the Yamato delivery service (price is from 1200 yen per box of food delivered.)  This is one of many reasons to stay at a hotel and not an airbnb in Japan – so that a hotel can accept parcels on your behalf -if you’re super clever, you can order ahead and have a box of low-allergen foods for you arrive the day you check in to your hotel (if you email the hotel ahead – they will put cold items in the fridge for you.)    National Azabu in Tokyo stocks almond milk, oat milk, walnut milk, soy milk as well as pistachio milk.  Here is my general advice on buying different types of milk in Japan.

Almond milk, walnut milk, pistachio milk, soy milk in Japan. Sold at National Azabu, Tokyo

Gluten free cereal in Japan: National Azabu have gluten free cereals – they can deliver quickly within Minato-ku and they can also ship using the Yamato courier service (the same one that courier’s luggage) all over Japan.
