OTHER COUNTRIES: A ONE DAY ITINERARY IN MELBOURNE WITH KIDS

A few friends have asked for a one day suggested itinerary for seeing the centre of Melbourne with kids – particularly for first timers. One day is limited but …. here goes!
This itinerary only includes things accessed easy for the centre of Melbourne within a one day time frame so I recommend also looking into visiting options such as the Yarra Valley, Mornington Pensinsula, Great Ocean Road, Healesville Sanctuary etc when you have more time to explore slowly (preferably with a car.)

See here if you’d like to look at a full list of restaurants in the Melbourne CBD (central business district) and surrounding areas that we love and keep going back (I add to this list often.)

Preparing for an epic day out in the centre of Melbourne with kids:
-Weather check
-If you are visiting in summer with kids, I strongly recommend setting up your day around a trip to the Moonlight Cinema in the Botanical Gardens. See here for the details/schedule.

-Check What’s On Melbourne   orTimeout Melbourne. to see what is on (especially in the free kids section of) the National Gallery of Victoria, as well as seeing which musicals are in town (this includes shows at the Princess Theatre, The Regency Theatre, The Comedy Theatre, Her Majesty’s Theatre, The Athenaeum as well as the National Theatre in St Kilda and at Chapel Off Chapel) as well as major sporting events at the MCG, Marvel Stadium, Rod Laver Arena, John Cain Area etc. Then, arrange your day around that event.
It’s also worth looking at Australian Open tickets for January or Big Bash tickets for December. Summer is also a good time to check out what is happening as a part of the Midsumma Festival.

See Rent as a part of the Midsumma Festival 2026.

Eg. Here are places to visit (and eat at) before visiting the National Theatre for a show with kids.
-Choose restaurants from my suggested list below and make reservations accordingly so you don’t miss out on the good spots.
