HYATT HOUSE SHIBUYA WITH KIDS

HYATT HOUSE SHIBUYA WITH KIDS
Enjoying a steak at Outback Steakhouse, Japan.

If money was no object or I only had a short time in Tokyo with children I would DEFINITELY choose to stay at Hyatt House in Shibuya.
Please note that Shibuya can be hard with a stroller or with a child who needs a playground so, for that reason, I recommend this hotel for those with a baby in a carrier or children who are 5 and older.

Hyatt House Shibuya
STAYING AT HYATT HOUSE SHIBUYA
It’s hard to find an apartment hotel in Shibuya and this place is the answer. This is a BEAUTIFUL hotel. The staff all speak English and the high end facilities will blow your mind. Every room is your own chic little home with an in-room kitchenette, a small dining table, in-room washing machine and a Japanese bath.
The largest rooms can sleep 4 adults (more people if children are small enough to bedshare.) When reserved in advance, this hotel can also provide a cot.
The only downside of staying at Hyatt House Shibuya is the lack of black out curtains in the rooms – the room does fill with light quite early. Hopefully, this is something that is remedied soon.
This hotel provides pyjamas for guests to use and you can also purchase your own pairs to take home from the shop opposite the main reception desk.

Our room type at Hyatt House, Shibuya. The sofa bed was as solid and as comfortable as a real bed.

HYATT HOUSE SHIBUYA IS PET-FRIENDLY
This is one of the few inner city hotels in Japan that also allows small pets to travel with you. I know some of my readers travel from Europe with their small pets – so this is a central Tokyo option, if this is the case.

HYATT HOUSE SHIBUYA IS IN A FABULOUS LOCATION
The hotel is also only 750 metres from Shibuya Crossing! Each room has a kitchenette and dining table too! High-end dining but also casual family-friendly food options just literally outside the hotel – oh, and a 7-Eleven, of course.
See below for more information on family-friendly restaurants and how far away they are from Hyatt House Shibuya.

THE POOL AT HYATT HOUSE SHIBUYA
They have an indoor pool – kids welcome and there is no extra cost for using the pool! Please note that the pool is open 8am-8pm and, while kids can swim here, they ask for no horse-play and no diving.
Next to the pool is a small jacuzzi too! As you may have already read here, finding a hotel with a pool in central Tokyo is no easy feat, and finding an option that is kid-friendly, open year round and doesn’t charge extra for guests to use really is rare. Making Hyatt House extra special (especially when it’s so close to Shibuya Crossing too!)
Children 15 years old and younger must be supervised at the pool at all times.
The pool is on the 16th floor!

THE BREAKFAST BUFFET AT HYATT HOUSE SHIBUYA
This hotel has a beautiful buffet breakfast too. I love how the breakfast restaurant is on the 16th floor, offering an incredible view of Shibuya while you dine!
Unfortunately the breakfast hours are short (only 7am-9:30am!) so if you are a late riser you might want to skip on the breakfast included option.

THE 24 HOUR HOTEL SHOP
This shop cleverly sells frozen meals made by the french company Picard. This makes it so easy to be able to give children a quick, well-made meal at anytime. Each of the meals are around just 700 yen and can be warmed up or cooked again in your own room’s kitchenette.
My kids love the cheese pizza and the spaghetti.

Hyatt House cleverly sell frozen Picard meals in the hotel shop in the lobby. My kids loved the pizza and the spaghetti – it was great to just grab these options whenever we needed them – and so nice that we had the kitchenette in our room in order to do so.
This Cannelloni is sold in the shop in the lobby of Hyatt House Shibuya and it’s really really yummy.

There is a small fountain just outside of Hyatt House and, during the very hot months, some small children take off their shoes and have a little splash.

Shinpachi Shokudo Shibuya – Japanese Breakfast (8 mins in a cab from Hyatt House Shibuya)
(If you are looking for a traditional Japanese breakfast in Shibuya, I recommend Shinpachi Shokudo Shibuya. They welcome children and the set menu includes grilled fish of the day, rice and miso and some other pickles or other garnishes. Breakfast is under 700 yen here which is truly incredible. This restaurant is cash only. The entire venue is non-smoking. Children are welcome here but it wouldn’t be very polite to have them attend without ordering breakfast for them so make sure they are up for a traditional Japanese brekkie. This restaurant is 4 mins walk from Shibuya Station.

HOW TO CHECK OUT SHIBUYA CROSSING WITH KIDS NEAR HYATT HOUSE SHIBUYA?
SHIBUYA CROSSING WITH KIDS
This is a slice out of my Shibuya with kids article.
In my mind, Shibuya Crossing is the ultimate touristy thing to do in Tokyo.  But not in a bad way! In a “must, must, must – do” way.  It’s a Shibuya with kids must!!! If it’s your first time to Japan – this is something to do on day 1 or day 2 of your holiday, for sure.

Even after living in Japan for more than 10 years I still get the tummy butterflies and that selfie-twitch (yep – I said it) when crossing that massive intersection.

My hubby and I believe that Shibuya Crossing needs to be seen by day and by night.

I recommend crossing it yourself in a few directions and then taking in the crossing from up high – from a few different vantage points.
You may see the Mario-carts race-by or the latest Tokyo trend : international tourists taking kissing wedding photos in the middle of the intersection before the lights change.

Starbucks is the most touristy and popular spots to take in Shibuya Crossing. That does mean that it is VERY crowded though.
This Starbucks is open until 11pm so there is plenty of time to catch the view at night if the opportunity presents itself within your family itinerary.

Vegan options at Japanese Starbucks include:
(Always need to double check in case they have changed the recipe at all, of course)
-the Sugar Donut
-the Mushroom Keema Curry Hot Tortilla
-the Banana Rice Flour Muffin
-the Blueberry Bagel Sandwich

Her favourite at Japanese Starbucks – a mango frappuccino.

SHIBUYA CROSSING
JUST NEAR THE HACHIKO EXIT OF SHIBUYA STATION

There is a Lego replica of Shibuya Crossing at Legoland Discovery Centre (on Odaiba not in Shibuya), Tokyo!
When travelling with kids, make sure you visit here before taking a trip to Legoland in Odaiba as they have the cutest little replica made entirely of Lego (and it’d be way cuter for kiddies if they have seen the “real deal” first.) The detail is incredible.

See here for more ideas for time spent in Odaiba with kids.

Take in Shibuya Crossing from up high at Mag’s Park!
For an amazing view of Shibuya Crossing (that is doable with kids) is Mag’s Park. An amazing rooftop view of Shibuya Crossing – this spot is great with kids (during the day or at night time.) They change the deal here often but at the moment the entrance at night is 1800 yen at that includes one drink (alcoholic or soft drink) and the view is AMAZING over the crossing. Highly recommend!!!!

Go to the Tokyu Theatre Orb floor of the Shibuya Hikarie Building
Floor to ceiling windows here. It does look more spectacular in the evenings. You’re up so high! This photo was taken from the 11th floor.

From the Shibuya Station concourse
One more place to see Shibuya Crossing (that doesn’t cost any money) is from the Shibuya Station concourse ( just between the Keio Inokashira Line and Shibuya Mark City – can’t find it? Start at the Hachiko statue and walk into the station – thats probably the easiest way to get you facing the correct direction…) This can be a little hard to find so if you want to do the crossing view with kids do Mag’s Park (listed above)

Some blogs and content creators are recommending “Share Lounge” for Shibuya Crossing views. I DON’T recommend Share Lounge with kids (actually it’s not even good without kids, actually.) It’s a coworking space – do you really want to hang with kids in a co-working space? You pay by the hour and some food and drink is included but you might as well just have a meal at a nice restaurant instead as the spots near the window with the view are limited. It’s not worth the money and you most likely won’t see the view at all anyway. With kids? Skip it for sure.

SHIBUYA SKY open air observation deck (8 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
And if you’re keen on checking out one of the highest open air views of Tokyo, I recommended trying out “Shibuya Sky observation rooftop at the top of the relatively new Shibuya Scramble Square complex.   Warning, it is BUSSSSSSSSSSSY !!!  I wouldn’t recommend visiting without booking online first.  Book your tickets to Shibuya Sky here.  *If you’re going to Shibuya Sky with children under 12 years old,  you will need to only buy the adult tickets and then you buy the child tickets on the day.  I took my two kids on my own and it was really easy to buy their child tickets on the day (and I pre-purchased my own.)
Please note that ticket prices and sessions will change from April 1, 2025.   As of April 1st, tickets are 2,700 yen per adult for visits before 3pm.  After 3pm visits are 3,400 yen.  Tickets are sold from midnight two weeks before the day you wish to visit Shibuya Sky.

So many people are OBSESSED with going to Shibuya Sky at sunset. I think it doesn’t matter – a clear sky day means you can see out as far as to Mt Fuji and sunset time comes with sooo many people. I say go with the middle of the day or morning instead (also, it’s a gamble at any time as no-one knows how the weather will behave.)
If you have luggage, you will need to store it in one of the coin lockers in an area called “Paradise Lounge.”
It costs 2000 yen for adults, 1600 yen for students and 600 yen for 3-5 year olds and is open from 9AM-11PM.
Shibuya Scramble Square (Shopping and Dining Complex) can be accessed directly from Shibuya Station.

After Shibuya Crossing, check out …
Next, keep a look out on the opposite side of the road to the station for a little fruit store –
Nishimura Fruits Parlor”  you may want to take a look at this very, very high-end produce that is sold as gifts. I’m talking US$200 cantaloupe melons and $100 strawberries.  ( In other words, keep those little hands back, ok? Eeeeek.)   But seriously, the very front of the store has some reasonably priced fresh fruits of the season (not as affordable as going to a supermarket, of course, though)  and fruit juice smoothies too – that won’t make you completely poor.

Nishimura Fruits Parlor luxury strawberries and melons.

A drugstore with baby food near Shibuya Crossing
If you need to buy packaged baby food, OS Drugstore at the bottom of Dogenzaka (very close to Shibuya Crossing) stocks jars of baby food and crackers.  This drugstore is open from 8am most days and closes around 9:30pm.  Put OS Drugstore Shibuya into google maps if you can’t find it. Like most drugstore in the city, they do not stock nappies (except for some giant incontinence pads.)  If you are looking for diapers/nappies in Tokyo, see my blog post here.
I’ve written more about buying baby food in Japan here but I highly recommend using google translate to check all ingredients if baby has any allergies.

Baby Food (bottom shelf in this picture.)
The baby food is on the bottom shelf in this picture. Left to right: “Chicken & Fish Western Style Bento” Baby Food for 9 months+ – in the blue packaging.
“Japanese style Lunch Set” baby food for 12 months+. Animal Crackers (Called Animal Biscuits, here tho) for 9 months+. In the blue box. Small fish flavoured rice crackers for 7 months plus – in the red box.
Filtered water (for making formula on the go) . Premixed formula called Raku Raku Milk (this can be put in a bottle and given to baby at room temperature.) It is called Raku Raku Milk and it is in the yellow can here.

Next, really explore Shibuya with kids properly. Allow yourselves to get a bit “lost!!”
Getting ‘lost’ (as lost as the control freak in me is ever game enough to get when armed with google maps) in Shibuya is a lovely way to get a feel for the area.  You’ll find cool hidden alleyways, street art, ramen shops, cheap accessory stores etc.  You can explore for a long time without ever getting far from the station.  My kiddies love to go and use the headphones to listen to music in Tower Records.  There is a rooftop cafe in the Summer too.

WHERE TO EAT LUNCH OR DINNER WITH KIDS NEAR HYATT HOUSE SHIBUYA?

Nikujyu Gyoza no Dandadan, Shibuya Sakura Stage ( 2 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
This is a very casual izakaya that sells gyoza. The gyozas are fried but have a soft juicy meat filling.  They also serve Suigyoza which is a boiled gyoza. They welcome kids and babies here but only between 11:30am-3pm. Just a heads up – the sashimi here is actually horse sashimi. They have free wifi. They accept most major credit cards. Budget 2000 yen per adult here (there is also a 200 yen service charge per person here – and like most izakaya in Japan, you will be served an otoshi appetizer – you don’t have to eat it if you don’t want to- just leave it on the table.)
This restaurant is non-smoking.
Open everyday 11:30am- midnight (Kids can only be in the restaurant between 11:30am-3pm)
It’s possible to make a reservation here but the restaurant seats 54 so you can also try for a walk in.
They accept most major credit cards.
I recommend budgeting 2000 yen per adult to dine here at lunch and more like 3000 yen for dinner.
See pictures of the Nikujyu Gyoza no Dandadan menu here.

Nikujiru Dandadan Shibuya Sakura Stage. Kids allowed here 11:30am-3pm.

Sushi Hicho, Shibuya (2 mins walk from Hyatt House)
Sushi Hicho is just so so beautiful. They do allow children but the restaurant is small (only seats 24) so, for me, I would only feel comfortable bringing a sleeping baby in a stroller or carrier or a child old enough to sit quietly and eat and enjoy the sushi and sashimi. Please budget 8000 yen per person at lunch time and more like 15,000 yen for dinner. They accept most major credit cards. See the full menu at Sushi Hicho here. This is a non-smoking restaurant. As with all high end sushi restaurants, customers are asked to not wear any perfume or cologne. Make a reservation online for Sushi Hicho here. This restaurant is a 1 min walk from Shin-Minami Exit of Shibuya Station.

Wagyu Ramen in Shibuya (11 mins walk from Hyatt House)
Wagyu Ramen Goku is 5 mins walk from Shibuya Station and 11 min walk from Hyatt House Shibuya. They use beef and beef broth (quite unusual as most ramen places use pork.) They welcome children – however, as they don’t accept reservations, I do recommend going outside of traditional lunch or dinner hours to avoid a queue. As I say with all of my ramen recommendations, please please please be careful when dining with big bowls of hot liquid around babies and toddlers (maybe have a think about if this is really the right age or not to take them somewhere like this as the counters aren’t that big and the ramen is hot.) Budget 2000 yen per person to dine here. They accept most major credit cards. They have an English menu.

Or perhaps you would like to eat some Teppanyaki Wagyu for lunch (or dinner)?
*Please note that this restaurant only accepts children who are 6 years old and older and children will need to also order an adult sized course*
This restaurant is called Ginza no Steak Shibuya Branch (it comes up Ginza Steak Shibuya on google maps.)
This is an all you can eat steak restaurant.  They can accommodate gluten free customers but please ask which appetizers are gluten free as you order (and they are happy to change the dessert to fruit, if you need.)  Steaks arrive without sauce so you can add your own sauces and seasonings (or avoid sauces completely if you have allergies.)
Just a little warning that teppanyaki may be different to teppanyaki you are used to at home so you might want to read this before making a reservation.
Budget for lunch is approximately 9000 yen per adult.
Budget for dinner is approximately 15,000 yen per adult.
Please note that there is a service charge of 10% added to the bill and also a seating charge of 300 yen per person.
The entire restaurant is non-smoking.   There is an English menu.

Vegetable Skewers Creative Oden Nurukan Sato (10 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
If it’s mealtime while you’re at Shibuya Hikarie, I recommend eating at Japanese Izakaya “Vegetable Skewers Creative Oden Nurukan Sato” on the 7th floor. Oden is hot pot dish cooked mostly in winter. I’d describe it as winter vegetables (mostly root veg and some konyakku) bubbling away in an almost clear fish based broth.  Other options as well as oden are : agedashi tofu with anzu beans,  sashimi plates of 3 or 5 different types of sashimi, fried oysters, mozzarella and wild duck caprese, karaage (japanese fried chicken), potato salad, …. skewer options include eringi mushrooms wrapped in pork, zucchini with camembert, asparagus wrapped in pork、shiitake mushrooms and mentaiko…  You can see pictures of this izakaya and some of the menu options on their instagram here.
Like almost all izakaya in Japan, the dishes are small and are meant to be shared. You order a few for the table and then keep ordering more of what you like or other dishes you would like to try. (The exception is at lunchtime at this restaurant as they have a teishoku menu – a menu where every person orders one dish and it comes with some set side dishes.)  This restaurant does accept reservations or you can walk-in.
They welcome families and have space to store a stroller while you dine.  They also have some high chairs.
For lunch here I recommend budgeting around 1500 yen per adult. At dinner time more like 4500 yen.  This restaurant has an english menu and they accept most major credit cards.

*I don’t usually write to say “don’t do this” (because I just leave out the places that I don’t love – but I do feel that it’s important to share that I DON’T recommend the Disney Harvest Cafe inside the Shibuya Hikarie building. From the outside it looks like a dream but the food is expensive and tastes so so so bad.*. The gift store here is cute though.

Washoku En Toki no Toki Izakaya (10 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
Washoku En Toki no Toki Izakaya is an izakaya with a view that also welcomes children.  This is inside the Shibuya Hikarie building too – on the 6th floor.  Like most izakaya in Japan, the idea is that you order lots of little dishes and try lots of little things and then order more as you go, if you wanted to.   This is a wonderful place for adults to try Japanese sake (hot and cold) or lemon sours etc while still dining as a family.   I recommend budgeting for 2000 yen per adult here at lunch time and more like 5000 yen at dinner time.
The entire restaurant is non-smoking and they do accept most major credit cards.
You can ask you hotel to make a reservation for you or you could try for a walk-in (I only recommend attempting this before 7pm.)
The view here at night is really special (oh-so very Tokyo.)
Shibuya Station is connected to the Shibuya Hikarie building so, if coming by train, follow the signs within the station.

Shabu Shabu Tsukada (9 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
If you are keen on a good quality Kobe Beef and Matsuzaka beef lunch, I recommend making a reservation for Shabu Shabu Tsukada in Shibuya Scramble (the same building as Shibuya Sky.)   It’s a bit of a fancy restaurant but they do welcome kids.  Tsukada serve shabu shabu and sukiyaki, made in a hot pot at your own table.  I recommend budgeting for 3000 yen for lunch or 8000 yen per person for dinner.  This restaurant is entirely non-smoking and accepts most major credit cards.  They have an English menu and also offer a vegetarian menu.   This restaurant has space for strollers.  No kids menu (school aged children are expected to order a meal/ lunch set )  There is no dress code but diners are asked to not wear strongly scented perfume.

Kura Sushi Shibuya – Sushi Train (11 mins walk from Hyatt House)
If you’re looking for a sushi train lunch there is also Kura Sushi sushi train restaurant (it’s a chain so they are in most of major spots in Japan) just 1 minute walk from Shibuya 109.  This place is completely automated . No Japanese language skills required whatsoever. It is a non-smoking restaurant and accepts most major credit cards.  This is the  Kurasushi Shibuya menu.  I’d expect to pay approx 1500 yen per adult for a decent meal.  They are open 11am-11pm daily.  Kurasushi have a list of all of their food with common allergens here.
(Kurasushi is great when dining with kids and there are lots of cooked non-raw sushi options but if you really love sushi you may be a little disappointed with the raw-fish quality / some have found that the fish meat is a bit frozen in the middle.  See here for my tips on what to do in Japan if your kids like to eat westernized versions of sushi or california rolls etc.)
For sushi train options in Japan – Kura Sushi definitely has the most gluten free options (you can even put a filter on the ipad menu to see what is an option for you.)
If you are looking for vegan Kura Sushi options, go or the mango, pineapple or cucumber maki options.

Kotegaeshi – Okonomiyaki (12 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
If you’re looking to try some okonomiyaki for dinner ( also open for lunch too, actually)  then I recommend wandering into the very casual but always bustling pub/restaurant Kotegaeshi.    It is only a few minutes walk from Shibuya Crossing.  It is on the fifth floor but there is a small elevator.
Okonomiyaki is like a Japanese omelette and you choose the fillings such as meats or seafood or vegetables.
An adult lunch will be approximately 1000-2000 yen and dinner more like 2000 yen.
Other popular options to eat include yakisoba, which is noodles cooked on the hot plate in front of you.
Foods cooked in front of you are really good for fussy eaters or those with an allergy as you can say no to an ingredient before it is added.   It’s very visual and it’s fun for kids to get involved. Read here for how to order a vegetarian version of okonomiyaki
This restaurant is very casual. You will be sitting with students who are chilling after university or business teams heading out for a meal after work.
These kinds of meals are meant to be shared but you can order your own if you prefer.
This restaurant does accept credit cards.
They do have an English menu.

Please note that this restaurant is not a non-smoking restaurant so you will need to choose your table carefully – another way to avoid a smokey restaurant is to dine early with kids – for example a 5pm dinner.

Gonpachi Shibuya – Japanese Izakaya (13 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
Another child-friendly, smoke-free option is Gonpachi in Shibuya, up the hill from the famous crossing ( walk up Dogenzaka Road, past Hooters, past KFC).  This Gonpachi isn’t as famous as the Nishi-Azabu branch ( often referred to as the Kill Bill Restaurant and I talk about it here) but it is just as English friendly and offers a beautiful view of the city as it is on the 14th floor.
It is also possible to reserve a private room with horigotatsu style seating ( that means it looks like you’re kneeling at the table but the seat is actually dug out at floor level.) A private room is great if baby or toddler is likely to want to move around and play for the meal.  Food options include sushi, soba noodles, yakitori, tempura etc. Their entire menu is here.
They don’t mind if you bring your own baby food.
They do have high chairs.  The entire restaurant is non-smoking. Also open for lunch,

Milan Nataraj – Indian restaurant (6 mins in a cab from Hyatt House Shibuya or 13 mins walk)
Vegetarian Indian Restaurant with an All-You-Can-Eat Lunch buffet
2 mins walk from Shibuya Station (take the Hachikoen Exit) is Milan Nataraj – an all vegetarian indian restaurant and they are known for the all-you-can-eat lunch buffet for under 2000 yen. This restaurant is also popular with those looking for Halal dining options. The food is really good here.   Some seats at this restaurant have a power point you can use to charge your devices while you dine.   This restaurant has free wifi. The naan here is vegan. Almost always – 3 of 4 of their curries are vegan here. Items with dairy are clearly labelled.  All allergens such as flour, milk, nuts, eggs and soy are all labelled clearly, actually.  This restaurant accepts most major credit cards for purchases of 1000 yen and higher.  I would budget for 1000 yen per person for lunch and more like 3000 yen at dinner.  This restaurant does accept reservations- click here to make a reservation at Milan Nataraj now. The entire restaurant is non-smoking.  There is a kids menu (which includes kids plates and cutlery)  and there is also place to store a stroller while you dine. (There is quite a nice view from the restaurant at night.)  Kids 2 and under can eat at the lunch buffet for free when dining with an adult and kids 3-9 years old are half the adult price.

I’ve written in detail here about how it is actually slightly harder to be vegetarian than vegan in Japan.

We Are The Farm – Farm to Table Restaurant (6 mins in a cab from Hyatt House Shibuya)
For a delicious farm-to-table restaurant, I recommend We are the Farm in Shibuya. It is 10 minutes walk from Shibuya Crossing.  .  Lunch is especially good value but the dinner is also amazing.
The lunch course  at this Farm-to-Table restaurant includes soup & a kale side salad and you can choose your own main :  a vegetable gratin, a “choose your own ingredients salad” or a grilled vegetable platter (see pictures below)  for 1500 yen.
The entire restaurant is non-smoking. They also are happy for diners to bring strollers inside.

They also have beer made with Kale if you’re feeling game…. let me know if it’s any good?

I especially love their lunch salad buffet (although they might not like me visiting as I just keep eating and eating.)
If you get the chance, they sell the amazing cheese and tomato dish at all times of the day.

My husband and I go here for date nights often and, I know it sounds weird to say but, this simple marinated onion served with rock salt was to die for!

We both love their ‘Chunky Veg’ gratin and the plate of all the amazing Japanese varieties of mushrooms was one of my favourites.
The only negative thing I have to say about this place is that I haven’t found any yummy alcoholic drinks there yet – but I rarely have success with organic wine. Perhaps its those chemicals that make wine taste so yummy???!!!

Syabu-yo – Sukiyaki & Shabu-Shabu (9 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
This hot-pot style of eating is so much fun for families and just interactive with kids.  This restaurant Syabu-yo is a chain restaurant.
Syabu-Yo Shibuya Eki Mae Branch is in a building right on Shibuya Crossing.
Diners choose the amount of time they would like to have unlimited meat brought to their table (usually 60 or 90 mins) and that price also includes access to a salad and vegetable buffet and ice-cream.  The instructions on how to make your meal at the table are here on the Syabu-Yo website but the staff will also help you.   My kids prefer sukiyaki to shabu-shabu as it is so sweet and more-ish.
This style of restaurant is tricky if everyone has different dietary requirements (for example if one family member is vegetarian etc) as all the food is cooked in one pot. I guess you could get around this by getting two tables with two separate pots. Sometimes they have pots like the one pictured below that has two sections. This is mostly so you can cook two different flavours but it could also work for a meat side and a veg side too, I guess
To eat here I would budget for around 3000 yen per adult.   The entire restaurant is non-smoking. Syabu-Yo accept most major credit cards.
If you like this restaurant – I’m pretty sure you will! Then you are in luck as you can always google your closest Syabu-Yo branch as they are all over Japan.
They have free wifi.
There is a change table in the bathroom at this restaurant.   They also have the little robots that bring the meat to your table. My kids love this!
To get here, take the Hachiko Exit of Shibuya Station.    It’s on the 9th floor of a building on Shibuya Crossing the same building as the Loccitane Store and Cafe Gust. There is an elevator.   This restaurant is open every single day of the year.   Best to have your hotel make a reservation on your behalf (unless you plan on trying your luck by walking in – warning that weekends and holidays this can be a popular spot for teens and tourists) or you can try via the Hot Pepper website here but you need to use google translate.

Uogashi Standing Sushi Bar (9 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
If you don’t have a stroller  (no room) and have kids old enough to stand still and be reasonably quiet while they eat, you might want to pop into Uogashi Standing Sushi Bar in Shibuya. This is a walk-ins only restaurant.  It is non-smoking. And, as the name suggests, you stand while you eat.  Uogashi accept most major credit cards.  It is just one minute walk from Shibuya Crossing.  It’s not a Michelin star restaurant by any means, but it is a great place to try some new kinds of sushi and sashimi without breaking the bank.  I would budget for about 1000 yen per person for a meal here or half that if you just want to try a few things.

Standing Sushi Bar Shibuya. Photo by instagram.com/micko_adams

It’s a great spot for bigger kids to try their Japanese skills actually as the chef is right in front of them .  They can try “Ebi kudasai” (Prawn, please.) “Aburi Toro Salmon kudasai” (flame-seared salmon sushi please)
Parents can also try out some sake!
This place is small so it would be hard to dine here with more than 3-4 people and still remain all together.

Uobei Sushi (10 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
Just halfway up the hill from Shibuya Crossing is Uobei Sushi Restaurant.   Turn right down an alley after Mos Burger and it’s on your right.  This place is such a fun place to take children as all orders are made on an ipad with pictures and then the orders come zooming down a conveyor-belt and stop right in front of your seat.   This is a fantastic place to try different kinds of sushi for the first time but it’s also great for fussy eaters as it’s also possible to order fries, noodles, ice-cream and fried chicken. You could even try a weird and wonderful sushi hybrid “cheeseburger sushi roll.”  All dishes are around 100-200 yen each so it’s actually really difficult to spend too much money.
It’s not posh and the food isn’t going to be awarded a Michelin star anytime soon – but it’s such a fun way to dine.
*For adults only* Why not try a Japanese mixed drink called a Lemon Sour or a Lemon Chu-Hai ?  Kanpaii ! (Cheers!)
On the ipad to order, you can click on a button to request gluten free soy sauce.

It’s not possible to reserve a table so just tell the staff how many people and wait for your spot to open up.  Customer turnover is really high so the wait has never been longer than 10 minutes for us before.

Shimbu Sakiya Ramen – gluten free ramen and fried chicken (12 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
Another option just minutes from Shibuya for lunch or dinner is Shimbu Sakiya Ramen – especially if someone in your family needs gluten free food. This is a casual hole in the wall ramen place – so don’t expect fancy , ok?  They do not have vegan or vegetarian options but they do have gluten-free ramen made of brown rice noodles.
This place is also well-known for having incredibly yummy karage (Japanese fried chicken.)
Sorry to be a broken record on this blog but I honestly don’t recommend taking babies and toddlers to ramen shops. There isn’t space to keep them safe in terms of keeping little hands out of boiling soup broth.    But for school aged kids – it can be fun (& yummy).  If your kids don’t like ramen then there are also fried chicken rice bowls. The chicken is also gluten free and it’s 2 pieces for approx 300 yen.
The gluten free meals are marked clearly on the ordering vending machine outside.
This ramen shop is cash or Suica card only.  Completely non-smoking.   This Shibuya ramen shop is 4-5 mins walk from Shibuya Crossing.

Gabulious – Casual Italian (12 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
Another restaurant that is just near Shimbu Sakiya Ramen is an Italian fusion izakaya/wine bar called Gabulicious. They welcome children and babies.  The cheesecake here and the risotto is gluten free !  It is 5 mins walk from the Hachiko Exit of Shibuya Station.  They have a “10 vegetable salad with achovy dressing”, fries, plates or cheese or cheese fondue and also margherita pizza.   I recommend budgeting for 4000 yen per meal per adult to dine here (that amount includes drinks.) They accept most major credit cards.   Please note that there is a 400 yen per head service charge (to say thank you, you will receive an otoshi appetizer when you sit down – if you don’t want to eat it – that’s fine- just leave it sitting on the table. ). This is a non-smoking restaurant with the exception of smoking allowed on the second floor terrace.  This restaurant has free wifi.

Ore Ryu Shio Ramen (8 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
I don’t recommend this spot for small kids but if you are travelling with kids who are 10+ or are teens, I recommend visiting a ramen restaurant called Ore Ryu Shio Ramen.  Shio Ramen means “salt ramen” – as the ramen stock/soup is quiet simple and mild.  The tables are filled with different condiments – you can make your ramen spicy or garlic-y or sweeter etc. First thing to do is try the broth and then add as you go.   A bowl of ramen here will cost a little under 2000 yen.   They sell ramen and tsukemen here. There is also fried chicken and gyoza on the menu here.  This is a walk-in restaurant only (no reservations.)  Cash only.
They have an English and Japanese menu. See here for instructions on how they recommend you add the condiments and flavours to your ramen.
The restaurant is 8 mins walk from Shibuya Station (it’s a bit of a walk up the hill but it will take 8 mins.)  This is a non-smoking restaurant.

This restaurant welcomes kids and has the cutest kid’s plate. It is 3 mins walk from Shibuya Station. Budget 1100 yen per adult for a meal here. See the full menu for Yamamoto no Hamburg Steak here. They accept most major credit cards. This is a walk-in only hamburger steak spot (no reservations.) The restaurants seats 23 people ( a mixture of table and counter seating.) The entire venue is non-smoking. They have different types of hamburg steaks and then you choose your own toppings such as fried egg, bacon, melted cheese etc. Side dishes include fried chicken, sausages, a few small salads etc. They have lots of soft drinks and alcoholic drinks and they also do their own blended vegetable juice.

Momo Paradise
(8 mins in a cab or 14 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
An all you can eat Sukiyaki and Shabu Shabu option in Shibuya with kids
Momo Paradise
used to be one of the Nabezo restaurants in Shibuya and has since switched hands. This is fantastic place to come and eat A5  Rank Wagyu (or not if you’d like to eat the non-branded kind of meat and save some money) and also a fabulous option if you all need some more veggies in your life! ( I speak about this a lot here but lots of families worry about getting enough fresh western style salads and veggies while in Japan and this is literally all you can eat veggies and salads! It’s amazing!)
When you enter the restaurant, the staff will guide you through the menu (they speak english here!). You choose your menu package – wagyu meat or local meat, pork or beef or pork AND beef ( I don’t eat meat but I still need to pay for it to dine here so I can access all of those yummy all you can eat veggies and tofu – side note: tofu in sukiyaki is heaven!)  and then you can go up to the veggie buffet to choose your veggies for the table.  They give everyone little paper aprons and little paper covers for bags etc too.

The price for your meal also includes all you can drink soft drinks and juice, ice-cream, dumplings (to cook in the hot pot at your table) and unlimited steamed rice.

We went on a weekday lunch time and were able to walk right in without a booking.   It was approx 2200 yen for me and 1700 yen for my kids (less if your kids are younger than 7.) *Please note that Wagyu is, of course, extra.
My kids love sukiyaki more than shabu shabu because it’s sweeter.  They also love doing the “cooking.”

When you start cooking, they give you a cover for your bags and little aprons for everyone at the table.

The Aftermath for us wasn’t pretty but we were in an amazing happy food coma and I loved that they pulled out their scratch art from the Daiso (100 yen store) at Mark City in Shibuya and I could just “be” for a second.

Sushi Kourin – Omakase Sushi (9 mins by cab from Hyatt House Shibuya)
10 mins walk from Shibuya is Sushi Kourin. This is fine-dining omakase sushi. Please remember to not wear perfume and cologne.   They welcome children and babies. I don’t recommend bringing children who can’t stay seated for the full meal. They also have space for strollers (you need to let them know that you will have a stroller with you when you make the reservation.)     I recommend budgeting for 15,000 yen per adult. There is a service charge of 530 yen per person (they will provide you with an ootoshi appetizer when you sit down – if. you don’t want to eat it – just leave it on your counter/table.)   They accept most major credit cards.  This restaurant only seats 11 people.
Book using this ByFood link now if you have allergies or want to choose your exact course ahead of time. You can tell them exactly what you can and can’t eat and order your exact course online. This is also a great option if you’re worried about any language problems while in the restaurant – it can all be done in English ahead of time.
Please note : OMAKASE IS NOT FOR FUSSY / PICKY EATERS.
OMAKASE SUSHI IS FINE DINING AND THE CHEF CHOOSES THE MENU. THAT MEANS YOU WILL LIKELY GET SUSHI ITEMS LIKE FISH EGGS, SQUID, FISH SPERM, SEA URCHIN ETC. YOU CANNOT CHOOSE WHAT YOU DO AND DON’T LIKE. THAT IS OMAKASE. IT MEANS THE CHEF CHOOSES.
You don’t have to eat everything on your plate*. You don’t even have to try everything. You are the customer. But you don’t get to choose the menu.
*Japanese people do dislike food wastage (don’t we all?!) and so I recommend at least trying each dish OR if you are not the type to want to try lots of new and wonderful delicacies – then I don’t think omakase style is the best choice for you. Go for a restaurant where you order the dishes you want to eat (a la carte or tanpin as it’s called in Japan.)
Here are a whole lot of my personal tips on dining etiquette in Japan.

“Australian” Steak and Seafood
Hate to break the hearts of Americans that love the Outback Steakhouse – but it isn’t even a little bit “Australian” to me.  I am partial to a “bloomin’ onion” from here though. I really like it here – especially when dining with kids.  The portions are generous and it’s very kid friendly.  It is 5 mins walk from Shibuya Station.   They welcome children- they have a kids menu and space to store strollers while you dine.  Please note that a 10% service charge is added to your bill when you dine here.  They do accept most major credit cards. I recommend budgeting 2000 yen for an adult lunch meal and more like 4000 yen at dinner time. This restaurant is completely non-smoking. Rigoletto – Italian Restaurant (5 mins by cab or 14 mins on foot from Hyatt House Shibuya)
If you’re looking for a bit more a fancy sit down lunch in Shibuya, I recommend making a reservation at The Rigoletto in Shibuya. The cuisine is Spanish-Italian.  They do welcome children but don’t (of course!) welcome outside food.  Also, they have limited seating areas for families with kids under 6 years old so it is best to make a reservation to avoid missing out.   This restaurant is a bit of a “special celebration” kind of vibe so, if your kids aren’t great at staying in their seats for meal times it might be worth skipping until they are a bit bigger.
You can see the entire The Rigoletto menu online here.  Something handy for families – they are happy to do “half & half” pizzas at all times except for during weekday lunchtime hours. The Rigoletto also have several vegan dishes and a gluten free fettuccini option.
Please note that this restaurant charges a service charge of 440 yen per person for those who dine after 5pm everyday  (and 220 yen per person from opening until 5pm on weekends.)

Wan Shibuya Spainzaka (7 mins in a cab or 14 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
Just 3 mins walk from the Disney Store here (or 5 mins walk from Shibuya Station via the Hachiko Exit)  is a Japanese izakaya chain branch called Wan, Shibuya Spainzaka branch.  This is a fabulous place to experience a Japanese izakaya as a family without breaking the bank.   It is cheap and cheerful and won’t be the most fancy food you have in Japan but its easy and yummy (and the vibes are oh so Japanese izakaya!)  Families are welcome here with kiddies.  Best to get your hotel to make a reservation.  They accept most major credit cards.  Please note that there is a service charge of 500 yen to dine here.  When dining here I would budget for approx 2500 yen per adult.   They have an English menu here.  The entire venue is non-smoking. See here for some pictures of menu options at Wan here.  My family like menu options like gyoza, garlic shrimp, fried chicken, Japanese style caesar side salad, chicken tsukune meatballs with cheese inside, edamame, sashimi…. there are also two kid’s menu plates (under 600 yen) : one is a pasta and one is a plate with some fries, fried rice, a small sausage and a chicken nugget.    Like most izakayas in Japan, the idea is that you order lots of little dishes for the table and order more of the same or new items as you go.
For the grownups, they also have a happy hour between 5-7pm and most alcoholic drinks are less than 300 yen.
This is a shoes-off restaurant so make sure you have matching socks on and easy shoes to take on and off (I recommend considering these things when packing for Japan.) If you have shoes without socks, best to have some little socks or sockettes in your bag.

Goo Italiano (8 mins in cab or 13 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
There is a family-friendly Italian restaurant called Goo Italiano. This restaurant is 5 mins walk from Shibuya Station. They accept most major credit cards. I recommend budgeting for approx 2000 yen per adult at lunch time and more like 4500 yen for dinner. The entire restaurant is non-smoking. This restaurant isn’t great at making menu alterations so it’s easier to just order as is written on the menu.

Zauo (7 mins in a cab or 16 mins no foot from Hyatt House Shibuya)
For an interesting lunch or dinner? How about using some of your Shibuya with kids time to going fishing in a restaurant?
This place is not far from the Disney Store. It is best to make a reservation but you could always try a walk in. Melissa Bertling wrote a great post here on this place: Zauo : the restaurant chain where you can fish for your meal.
UNFORTUNATELY – SINCE THE TOURIST BOOM – THE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT THIS RESTAURANT IS NO LONGER OF A JAPANESE STANDARD. SO DISAPPOINTING.

Rice Hack Bakery (12 mins in a cab from Hyatt House Shibuya)
Or for more gluten free options in Shibuya (11 mins walk from Shibuya Station or 6 mins walk from Meiji-Jingumae “Harajuku” Station) I recommend Rice Hack Bakery.  They sell breads but also pizza (every thing is gluten free).  They also sell sweet treats like chocolate muffins. There is a little bench out front to sit and eat (if you’re not taking away.)

Kinka Sushi (7 mins in a cab or 17 mins on foot from Hyatt House Shibuya)
**Note : the following restaurant isn’t exactly made for families but I would recommend it with a small baby or an older child who can sit still and quietly.  There are no high chairs and there are a few steps up to the elevator. I don’t recommend taking kids here for dinner**
I love this little lunch spot called Kinka in Shibuya.  It’s about 5 minutes walk from the crossing and is very close to the Disney Koen Dori Shibuya store.

Kinka is  small and modern and friendly.  They have an English menu and this plate of sushi below cost me 990 yen!!
If completely raw sushi creeps you out, they also have a blow-torched broiled version which is also really yummy.
Reservations are possible.
The entire restaurant is non-smoking.
Sushi omakase lunch sets start at 1200 yen.
At dinner time, there are four different omakase sushi courses to choose from that range in price from 2200 yen to 4900 yen.

You can see the full Kinka Sushi menu here.
I have more pictures and information about Kinka Sushi in a blog post here.

Kaikaya By The Sea – Japanese seafood izakaya (5 mins by cab or 15 mins on foot from Hyatt House Shibuya)
If you’d like to eat an early dinner with kids near Shibuya Crossing and like the kids of cozy restaurant where you’ll be dining with the locals…
I recommend Kaikaiya by the Sea.   The food is Japanese fusion and mostly based around seafood.  Here is the Kaikaiya by the Sea menu.
Please note that kids are welcome to dine here but ONLY until 6pm. The entire restaurant is non-smoking.  This restaurant accepts most major credit cards.  I highly recommend making a reservation. This place is tooooo good to miss out on.  With advance warning, Kaikaiya by the Sea can also accommodate gluten free diners- they can even do the 9 dish tasting menu gluten free (and that includes wagyu beef and prawns and they also have gluten free soy sauce.)

Kushikatsu Arata – Kushi Katsu Skewers (8 mins by cab from Hyatt House Shibuya)
For something casual and vibey, Kushikatsu Arata is a fantastic option.  This is a chain of Japanese style lightly battered, fried and skewered meat and vegetables.   There are also lots of seafood options.  It is located in the Parco Department Store, not far from Shibuya Crossing.
I love the vibe in here. The decor is fun and retro with Japanese decor and posters.
I find this kind of way to eat to be easy when you have vegetarian diners with you as all ingredients can be ordered, on skewers, on their own.
It is possible to reserve a table here but, personally, if its just seats for two? I’d just try my luck. Unfortunately, it is not a non-smoking restaurant – I’ve never found it to be too bad but I also want to let you know, incase this is a deal breaker for you.)
They do accept most major credit cards.

Also in the Shibuya PARCO complex is a vegan izakaya (Japanese style casual pub) called Masaka.

They do accept credit cards.   The restaurant is non-smoking.

And one more vegan friendly option within Shibuya Parco basement is Jikasei Mensho,  ramen spot.    This is not a vegan restaurant but they do serve 4 types of vegan ramen – one of them is spicy ramen. On the flip side of vegan options, they also serve Wagyu Ramen. Sometimes you need to wait to dine here but it most definitely worth it if you are vegan.
The spicy miso ramen is incredible and the Tan Tan Men is also so good.
Please note that this restaurant only accepts cash.  Jikasei Mensho do not accept reservations.  They do take most major credit cards.  They do not accept cash. Budget for an adult dining here? Approx 2000 yen. Please be careful taking small children to ramen spots as the broth is very hot and space is limited.

And in the same building is the Pokemon Center Shibuya. (I’m using the American spelling of “centre” here because that is what is written at the actual store.) If you are looking for pokemon cards, they sell the booster packs here. There is also Card Kingdom in Shibuya (that I mention earlier in this article). See here for my full list of places to buy Pokemon cards in Japan.
If you are coming just for the Pokemon Center, I recommend putting Shibuya Parco into google maps instead of the Pokemon Center (I find the directions to be super unclear otherwise.)  Of course, it’s usually super busy and it is full of more adults than kids.  For me, that place is sensory overload but it sure makes my little boy happy.
I’m, personally, not into Pokemon merch but I did consider these pokemon make up sponges here.

Just a few mins down the hill and on the left from Shibuya Parco is TGI Fridays Shibuya. I would budget 2000 yen per adult for lunch and 3000 yen for dinner.   They accept most major credit cards.  Please note that there is a service charge of 330 yen per person when you dine here.   This restaurant seats more than 140 people so you can make a reservation but you can also try to walk in (they don’t accept reservations for lunchtime on weekdays.)

If you want a bit of a fun dinner in this area. I recommend visiting Shibuya Zetton – this is a western style pub that prides itself on being a pub that meets an Japanese izakaya.  The food is all Japanese fusion but the interior is a bit like an American Sports Bar.  I recommend ordering the Thai curry spring rolls, secret recipe fried chicken wings, garlic shrimp, shrimp tempura, wagyu sukiyaki bowl.    See the full Shibuya Zetton menu here. Children are welcome here.  Shibuya Zetton accept most major credit cards (they don’t accept cash at all.)   Please note that there is a 500 yen service charge per person when you dine or drink here (and to say thank you – you will be given an ootoshi -a small appetizer –  I explain about that here in my Japan dining etiquette tips) .  The entire venue is non-smoking.  You can make a reservation here for Shibuya Zetton via  Tablecheck..

OTHER PLACES TO VISIT WITH KIDS NEAR HYATT HOUSE
Card Kingdom (8 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
If you are looking for Pokemon cards, go to Card Kingdom (just 3 mins walk from Shibuya Station – take exit C1 or C3 Exit to get nice and close). Please note that these speciality card shops can put a premium on top but if you are looking for hard core rare cards or a certain card etc, it could be a good option. It’s open 10am-10pm on weekends but from 5pm on weekdays. See here for other places to buy Pokemon cards in Japan.

The well-known Disney Store (7 mins in a cab or 14 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
This is the Disney Store with the famous exterior. I have a write up on this store here. Please note that there are LOTS of stairs in here.

If kids need a stretch and a play while in Shibuya, also not too far from the Disney store is Miyashita Park. Go to the rooftop for rock climbing and lots of open space to play!   The complex is also a shopping centre and their food court has opens such as Panda Express and Taco Bell too (and McDonalds.)

Taco Bell within Miyashita Park, Shibuya.
McDonalds Miyashita Park
Panda Express in Miyashita Park.

Did you know that instead of fries at McDonald’s you can order a side of edamame and corn. My daughter LOVES it!
A reader of my blog also gave me such an amazing suggestion – you can order a McDonald’s side salad and mix it with the edamame and corn to make a slightly heartier salad for under 600 yen!

Edamame & Corn from McDonalds in Japan

*side note: McDonald’s fries are not vegetarian/vegan – they are fried in beef fat.

There are often pop-up character cafes here – for example we visited when they had a Sponge Bob Pop-Up Cafe (like most character cafes in Japan the food tastes like playdoh but the novelty part is fun.)
The bathrooms here are lovely and new so go to the toilets here and change nappies here! The toilets here also have those really handy baby seats for while parents are sitting on the toilet- they really should be everywhere.

An example of the baby seat in the toilets.

Please see my article here on how to go about making a reservation for a restaurant in Japan when the website doesn’t have an English website option.

Tower Records Shibuya (6 mins in a cab or 14 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
If time permits, take a wander through Tower Records in Shibuya. My daughter loves to listen to all the music.
During the summer months there is a rooftop cafe too.

Rainbow Karaoke (6 mins in a cab or 14 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
While taking your time in Shibuya with kids, I highly highly recommend renting a karaoke box (booth) for just your family.
SEE HERE FOR STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS ON TAKING KIDS OUT TO KARAOKE IN JAPAN.
Just across the road from Tower Records is the BEST karaoke box set up I’ve ever seen!!   I’ve written in detail about this place – Rainbow Karaoke Shibuya here.
You could even do this for a mealtime as they bring the food to your room and you can even order a bottomless drink option.

Mega Donki (12 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
You may like to visit a touristy shopping haven – Mega Donki (aka a giant 24 hour Don Quijote store)  for shopping!  My guess is that this is the Don Quijote that Bruno Mars filmed that famous Donki advertisement. Open everyday of the year.

Mega Donki in Shibuya
Don Quijote is a great place to get all the different flavours of kit kats all in one place
I also love to buy Japanese bath balls here. They are bath bombs that change the colour and scent of the bath water but also have a small toy inside.

And almost directly across the road from Mega Donki is The City Bakery Shibuya Dogenzaka store.  You can see pictures of their hot & cold drinks as well as bakery treats they sell here on The City Bakery instagram.  Walk-ins only. They accept most major credit cards. There is some counter seating with spots you can charge your phone. I recommend trying a “brookie” -half brownie / half cookie.

100 yen store Daiso (8 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
Inside Mark City is a really big Daiso, 100 yen store.  Just for context, this is just 1 min walk from the Hachiko Statue or the Hachiko exit of Shibuya Station.

Kids playing with their scratch art from the Daiso (100 yen store) at Mark City in Shibuya and I could just “be” for a second after we ate lunch at sukiyaki /shabu shabu restaurant Momo Paradise, Shibuya.
Using the self-check out at Daiso, Mark City, Shibuya

Visit a Gourmet Food Hall (7 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
For something different, go to Hikarie department store in Shibuya.  The basement B2 floor inside the Hikarie Department Store contains a  Gourmet Food Hall which is so incredible and colourful for take home lunches and dinners.  One floor below that, B3, has a Gourmet Supermarket level too ( this is still less than 3 minutes walk from the Hachiko Exit of Shibuya Station).  There are some truly magnificent take out Japanese home cooking options.

Extra tip: While you are near Hikarie department store, if you need to charge your phone, go to the Bic Camera Shibuya Higashiguchi Store ( Higashiguchi = the east entrance store), the address is 1-24-12 Shibuya. On the Ground floor of the Annex ( 別館)is a charging station.   30 mins of express charging is 100 yen.  Instructions are in English and Chinese.

Also, while in Bic Camera, you may like to look for Nintendo Amiibo.
I must admit that I know NOTHING about Amiibo. However, my son always tells me that the Amibo selection in Japan is way better than other countries. If you are amiibo “shopping” then I recommend first going to your closest Yodobashi Camera or Bic Camera. Toys R Us Japan also has a good selection of Amiibo.

Amiibo sold in Japan. Look for Amiibo in Yodobashi Camera or Bic Camera – also Toys R Us Japan. I’ve included Amiibo on my list of suggested souvenirs and gifts from Japan for children.

Shibuya 109 (11 mins walk from Hyatt House Shibuya)
Right near the crossing is the very famous department store Shibuya 109.   It’s the mecca for Kawaii shopping.  It’s full of affordable, kawaii, glitzy, sparkly, kitschy, loveliness all aimed at teenage and University-aged young women.  It’s a great spot to enter – just for some very interesting window shopping.  (In case the boys are feeling left out… these is also a Shibuya 109 Mens around the corner too.)

I do love sometimes picking up some of the cheap and cheerful tops and accessories here (the bottoms would never ever fit me)

And then I recommend going down to the B2F.  To the Print Club Photo Booth store called Moreru Mignon.
We try and take print club pictures whenever we are in Shibuya with kids. It’s always so much fun (and so funny to see the results.)
The store is equipped with curling and straightening irons ( for rental use) and there are plenty of make up mirrors to ensure you look your best at photo time.
The shop itself is…well… basically ….my little girl’s dream bedroom.

This place is crazily busy on the weekends so be warned (although it’s okay if you go first thing in the morning.)
First thing in the morning or last thing at night is probably the best way to get a good look around and use the photo booths.

The print clubs are all 500 yen each.
They even have an English instruction sheet.
Even if you don’t take photos in the machines – the shop itself is like one giant pastel photobooth.

Shibuya Playground 4 Kids – Playcentre (6 mins in a cab from Hyatt House or 21 mins walk)
This is my favourite inner-city playcentre!   Shibuya Playground 4 Kids.  It’s not big (which means that I can keep tabs on  both kids at all times – woop woop!) but it is brand new and the staff keep it so pristine.  My 4 year old loves the gigantic sandpit (and the cutest little cubicle to blow the sand off feet and hands too), the climbing wall and jumping castle. While my little boy loves the imaginative play area with a pretend kitchen and shops as well as the cars & trains table.  If it’s rainy or everyone just needs a bit of downtime, we walk from Shibuya Crossing it takes 18 minutes.  Also, it is only 15 minutes from the T-Site in Daikanayama so would be the perfect “break” between changing areas of Tokyo.  (Take a look here if you decide to walk to Daikanyama and are looking for ideas with kids. )
Please note that this playcentre is only for 0-5 year olds. Babies under 6 months are free. Entrance is via the Konami Sports Club so registration is required at the ground floor before taking the elevator.

Entry to this playcentre is on a reservation only basis. You can contact Shibuya Playground 4 Kids to make a reservation here(A reservation also means you avoid turning up when the venue is closed for a child’s birthday party!)

If you are looking for a free play alternative to this playcentre there is a small park just down the hill behind it.  It’s not a beautiful park but also may solve your wriggle problems (if the weather allows, of course) The park is called Nabeshima Shoto Park. It has playground equipment and a pond (take mosquito repellant)  with turtles and koi.   There are public restrooms here.      This park is 4 minutes walk from the Shibuya Playground 4 Kids playcentre.

For fabulous gift shopping for friends and family  (specific suggestions of mine here , by the way) I recommend going to straight to LOFT department store.  It is 5 mins walk from JR Shibuya Station’s Hachiko Exit or 3 mins walk from Exit A3 from the subway stations.    The stationery selection is also immaculate.

Yoyogi Park (9 mins in a cab from Hyatt House Shibuya or 10 mins on public transport)
I recommend taking kids for a run around in Yoyogi Park.  A huge park (no playground equipment) and a lovely slice of green in the middle of the busy city. Like all large, beautiful parks in Japan, the foliage and view is completely different with every season.
The cafe near the entrance sells some savoury snacks and sweets as well as outdoor toys such as wind-up planes, frisbees and bubble liquid and wands.   There are lots of vending machines and public restrooms.  The pond in the middle has ducks and lots of big trees make for great hide’n’seek sessions.  If you have a kite or a scooter – this is one of the best central parks for it (some other parks have funny rules about sporting equipment etc.)
Did you know that you can now rent a bike in Yoyogi Park (including kids bikes, tandem bikes and parent & child mamachari electric bikes in Yoyogi Park with prices starting at 100 yen? (they accept most major credit cards, including Diners Club and American Express!)
To rent bikes as a family in Yoyogi Park, put “Yoyogi Park Cycling Center” into google maps (also sometimes referred to as “Pedalico”) – closest station is Yoyogi Park Station Exit 4B but you can also walk from Harajuku easily. Helmet rental is also available. The smallest child sized bike is a 12 inch (for children 2-4 years) and the Parent Child bikes are for children up to
Please note that bikes can only be used within Yoyogi Park grounds. The Cycling Center in Yoyogi is open 9am-4:30pm and is closed on Mondays (and Tuesdays if Monday is a public holiday) and is also closed during the Japan New Year Period.)

Aoyama Farmer’s Market – Weekends Only (5 mins by cab or 18 mins on foot from Hyatt House Shibuya or 16 mins on public transport)
The Farmer’s Market at UNU (United Nations University) is held every Saturday and Sunday. It is sometimes cancelled for rain.
There are as many as 70 different stalls to include organic fruit & veg, food trucks, juice & coffee vans, vintage clothing, souvenirs and home-wares.  It’s a great place for some Japanese language practice if you’ve been studying your food vocab and also a chance to stock up on healthy snacks for the next few days.
Just an idea but…why not buy some treats and walk to Yoyogi Park (above) for a picnic?

Some fruit and veg practice for while at the farmers market

Etiquette tip to share with kids: When eating at food stalls or food trucks in Japan, walking and eating is considered to not be polite. Wherever you buy food there will be a place to stand (usually just next to the shop) or a few chairs to sit. The food is designed to be enjoyed while standing still. Will you be arrested or anything for eating and walking? No. Is it considered impolite. These days I see more Japanese young people walking and drinking coffees. Food is still pretty much a no-go while on the move though. The idea it that you stop and take in the flavours and then keep moving.
It also eliminates the lack of rubbish bins around problem as the store will accept their own rubbish back once you have finished eating too.

Meiji Shrine (10 mins in a cab from Hyatt House Shibuya or 15 mins on public transport)
Meiji Shrine is located on the edge of Yoyogi Park and the walk into the shrine is just as spectacular as the shrine itself. You wont believe that you are only just over the train tracks from busy Harajuku. On weekends you will almost always be able catch a traditional Japanese wedding (ask the staff when the next procession will begin.)  There are toilets in several locations on the path to the shrine. The shrine is free to enter.
It is a decent walk along the path so little, tired legs will definitely need a stroller.
I have written all about visiting Meiji Shrine with kids in detail here.
