KID-FRIENDLY RESTAURANTS WITH VEGAN OPTIONS IN TOKYO

In all of my “by area” blog posts, I make sure I include as many vegan options as possible.

But I wanted to make this like of restaurants where you can sit down and have a nice or fancy meal as a family – not just vegan ramen type options.
All of these restaurants have vegan options AND allow children.    These recommendations are for central Tokyo (as I mostly have tourists in mind while writing this article – visitors who don’t speak Japanese.)

Please be sure to reserve these restaurants in advance AND make sure you give them at least two weeks heads up that you require a vegan menu (if there isn’t a permanent vegan menu item on the menu, that is.)

I have extra hints and tips on what to prepare ahead of time for travelling to Japan if you are vegan here (including my thoughts on those translation allergy cards). I also speak here on why I believe it is easier to be vegan over vegetarian in Japan.

For general options or fully vegan restaurants – I recommend looking at the Happy Cow app.

MY RECOMMENDED VEGAN OPTIONS IN SHIBUYA
Tiger Gyoza Kaikan
is 6 mins walk from the Hachiko Exit of JR Shibuya Station.   They accept most major credit cards. The entire hall is non-smoking.   This place is big and seats 80 people .  For dinner time I would budget around 3500 yen per adult and more like 2000 yen for lunch. If you are vegan, ask for their vegan menu.  This restaurant is super dooper casual so bring kids along and have fun. You can also order ramen and fried rice.

Please see my article here on how to go about making a reservation for a restaurant in Japan when the website doesn’t have an English website option.

If you’re looking for a bit more a fancy sit down lunch in Shibuya, I recommend making a reservation at The Rigoletto in Shibuya. The cuisine is Spanish-Italian.  They do welcome children but don’t (of course!) welcome outside food.  Also, they have limited seating areas for families with kids under 6 years old so it is best to make a reservation to avoid missing out.   This restaurant is a bit of a “special celebration” kind of vibe so, if your kids aren’t great at staying in their seats for meal times it might be worth skipping until they are a bit bigger.
You can see the entire The Rigoletto menu online here.  Something handy for families – they are happy to do “half & half” pizzas at all times except for during weekday lunchtime hours. The Rigoletto also have several vegan dishes and a gluten free fettuccini option.
Please note that this restaurant charges a service charge of 440 yen per person for those who dine after 5pm everyday  (and 220 yen per person from opening until 5pm on weekends.)
This restaurant is just 2 mins walk from Shibuya Station (via Exit B1).

In the Shibuya PARCO complex is a vegan izakaya (Japanese style casual pub) called Masaka.
Everything is vegan and I recommend trying the gyoza and “fried chicken.”  I would expect to spend around 2000 yen per adult for lunch or dinner.
They do accept credit cards.   The restaurant is non-smoking.

MY RECOMMENDED VEGAN OPTIONS IN HARAJUKU
How about some okonomiyaki in Harajuku? This restaurant is very popular and quite touristy – but that’s because the food is good and it’s nice a vibey.  Sakura-tei is 8 mins walk from the Takeshita exit of Harajuku Station or 8 mins walk from A2 Exit of Omotesando Station.  This is really fun way to eat out with kids as they can take part in the cooking process right at their own table.  I, personally, wouldn’t try and go here without a reservation unless I was at the door of the restaurant right at opening time. Make reservations on the Sakuratei website here.  At lunchtime I recommend budgeting for 2000 yen per adult and more like 3500 yen at dinnertime.   This restaurant accepts most major credit cards.  The entire restaurant is non-smoking.   This restaurant can also cater to vegan and gluten-free customers.

Another brunch, lunch or dinner option is Mr Farmer in Omotesando ( there are a handful of Mr Farmer restaurants around Tokyo.)
If you’re after fresh juice, organic vegetables, vegan meal options and desserts or just want to get in extra greens, you will LOVE this place.
*Smoking is allowed on the outdoor terrace.
*There are no high chairs but there is some sofa/booth style seating which makes it easier with toddlers.

Another dining option in Omotesando/ Harajuku is Brown Rice by Neal’s Yard.  This Omotesando cafe can also prepare a gluten free lunch set upon request.  Brown Rice by Neal’s Yard is in the backstreets behind Omotesando Station (just two minutes walk.). There is a beautiful outdoor dining area filled with greenery.  Reservations are possible here, as are walk-ins.  Most major credit cards accepted and is a non-smoking establishment. English menu available.  I would budget for 2500 yen per adult for a meal here. If you are vegan, there is a simple steamed vegetable set to order.

Inside the lovely shiny, reflective Tokyu Plaza Building in Harajuku.. (there’s a rooftop Starbucks with an outdoor area here too! See my Harajuku with kids tips here.)
Bills Omotesando is an Australian restaurant and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  They keep some tables for walk-ins but reservations are the best way to avoid disappointment. Reservations can be made in English on their website.   They have two vegan meals here and one vegan dessert.
It’s a higher end price point here so I would budget for 4000 yen per adult for dinner and 3000 yen for breakfast and lunch.
They are on the 7th floor of the Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Building- which is 4 mins walk from Harajuku Station.   See here for the full Bills Omotesando menu.  They also have space to store strollers while you dine. They also have a kids menu here.

MY RECOMMENDED VEGAN OPTIONS IN SHINJUKU
A great lunch or dinner option for families near Shinjuku Goen is Cafe La Boheme. This is actually a chain for restaurants but this one is particularly beautiful as it has high ceilings and looks onto so much greenery.  The food served here is casual Italian.    For an extra 200 yen you can also change any of the pasta dishes for gluten free pasta at Cafe La Boheme in Shinjuku.
If you are coming by train, it is 5 mins from Shinjuku Gyoenmae Station via Exit 2.  It is also 12 mins walk  from the free children’s Fire Museum and 11 mins walk from the Tokyo Toy Museum.
It is best to make a reservation. Although it’s only a couple of options each – there are vegetarian and vegan items on their menu too ( their vegan quinoa and kale salad is so good and they also have some vegan pasta dishes.)
At lunch time I would budget for 2000 yen per adult and 4000 yen for dinner.  You can see the entire Cafe La Boheme menu here.
Please note that at dinner time, there is a 800 yen service charge per person.  This restaurant does accept most major credit cards – and are a cashless restaurant.
If everyone is tired, these guys are also on ubereats.

Just 1o minutes walk from the Tokyo Toy Museum  and near Shinjuku Gyoen Gardens is a Shinjuku-based vegan restaurant called Viringuito.  The cuisine is Spanish & this family-run restaurant is entirely vegan.    If arriving by train, Akebonobashi Station is just 170 metres from the restaurant itself.
They are open from 8AM-10PM ( last orders at 9pm.).   This restaurant is also very accommodating with food allergies.  This restaurant has free wifi and also accepts most major credit cards.

If you decide to eat Okonomiyaki but one or more people in your group are Vegan, then I recommend visiting Zen.  Zen okonomiyaki shop is open from 5pm-11pm and they have a full English menu and a full English vegan menu.  It is 15 minutes walk from the Tokyo Toy Museum ( or 8 mins in a cab, approx 800 yen) or 13 mins walk from Takashimaya Times Square.  If coming from Shinjuku Station then I recommend taking the subway to Shinjuku-Sanchome Station and then walking for 300 metres. Please note that last time I checked they didn’t have a vegan cheese option but that was clearly marked on the menu.
Zen accepts most major credit cards.
Unfortunately the restaurant allows smoking so go early to miss the smoking drinkers.
They have horigotatsu seating as well as counter seating.  (Horigotatsu means you are sitting on dug out chairs in the floor – looks like you’re kneeling the table but you are still on a chair.)
It is possible to make a reservation on Zen’s English website here.

Also 5 mins walk walk from Shinjuku Gyoen Gardens is completely vegan restaurant Mer Umi to Geijutsu no Ie.  You MUST make a reservation in advance here.  Children are welcome.  At lunchtime, I recommend budgeting for approx 3000 yen per adult and more like 8000 yen at dinner time.  They accept most major credit cards here.  If you have a stroller, let the staff know and they will help you up to the 2nd floor.   They have an English menu here.  Please note that diners must not wear any perfume of cologne here (it messes with the scents and flavours at the restaurant.)  This is a wonderful restaurant for parents to try different types of sake.   The entire restaurant is non-smoking.   There is a service charge for each diner here of 500 yen (to say thank you for this – diners are given an otoshi – small appetiser- when they sit down. If you don’t want to eat it, that’s fine. Just leave it on the table.)
MER UMI TO GEIJUTSU NO IE
OPEN FOR LUNCH (WEEKDAYS ONLY) 11:30AM-4PM (LAST ORDERS AT 3PM)
OPEN FOR DINNER 7PM-MIDNIGHT
CLOSED WEDNESDAYS

This is random suggestion but you could even come here for breakfast !!!
Kakekomi Gyoza is in Kabukicho in Shinjuku (Kabukicho is the red-light district so I’d avoid this area with small kids after 6pm, personally – not dangerous – but there will be some drunk people, questionable posters about and sprukers handing out pamphlets etc.)
This is an izakaya that specialises in Gyoza of all different types, fillings and colours.  They are open 24 hours a day – 365 days a year!!! Kakekomi Gyoza also serve 1-2 vegan options.  Please note that this restaurant only welcomes school aged kids and older (6 years +) so if you have younger children – get the takeout options ! For takeway gyoza here it is 1100 yen for 10 gyoza and 1900 yen for 20 !!!!!!!
The entire restaurant is non-smoking BUT it is in Kabukicho – the red light district – sooooo if visiting with kids, I will only ever visit between 9am-6pm – just because the area around the restaurant is a bit yucky (not dangerous but just lots of drunkies and light up girlie bar signs etc.)
Kakekomi Gyoza is 5 mins walk from the East Exit of Shinjuku Station. It’s right next to the old Robot Restaurant.
For a full meal here, I would budget for 2500 yen per adult. They do accept credit cards. You can make reservations or you can just walk-in. They do have an English menu.

MY RECOMMENDED VEGAN OPTIONS IN GINZA
For a vegan breakfast, I recommend visiting Komeda Is. .  A cafe that serves plant-based meals, desserts and drinks ( including vegan alcoholic drinks.)  They open at 7am.  It’s 1 min walk from Higashi Ginza on the Hibiya and Toei Asakusa lines, Exit 5.
They accept most major credit cards. The entire restaurant is non-smoking.  They also have an English menu – . There is also space for strollers.

Bills Ginza
is a great aussie style breakfast option (also open for lunch and dinner.)  Open from 8:30am for brekkie.  I would budget for approx 3000 yen per adult for breakfast and lunch here (and more like 5000 yen at dinner time. It can get busy here on the weekends so it is best to make a reservation – otherwise you’ll be lining up forever.  The restaurant is wheelchair accessible. Some seats also have powerpoints where you can charge your phone.  There are quite a few vegetarian options on the menu here.  The restaurant has a lovely view.  You can make reservations via the Bills website here.  See the full breakfast menu here.  Here is a link to the all day kids menu.   They have high chairs here. There is also a change table in the bathrooms in the same building.

Loft in Ginza now also has a vegan cafe on the ground floor. It is called 2Foods.   They serve “chicken” nuggets with brightly coloured different rainbow sauces.  Other menu items include curry, omurice, burgers etc as well as vegan donuts.

There are lots of really cute and free museums for children in this area, see my Ginza with kids post here.

Extra tip: If you are looking for Gluten Free OR Vegan treats in this area, I recommend visiting a department store called OIOI (pronounced “Marui” in Japanese) and go to Natural House supermarket and delicatessen on floor B1.  This department store is just 1 minute walk from Yurakucho Station.  Open 11am-9pm. Options include vegan chocolates, soy meat, tofu, gluten free cakes and rice bread.
