35+ SHIBUYA RESTAURANTS FOR DINNER WITH KIDS

35+ SHIBUYA RESTAURANTS FOR DINNER WITH KIDS

Where can we eat dinner with kids in Shibuya?
I’ve made a long list of kid-friendly restaurants for dining out as a family in Shibuya here.   I include the address, budget expectations, any dietary options that these restaurants can cater for and extras such as space for strollers or high chairs. See my more general Shibuya with kids blog post here for ways to combine sightseeing in Shibuya with little ones with these eating out options! See here for my recommended places to stay with kids in Shibuya See here for my guide on Shibuya restaurants with high chairs.

See here if you are looking for restaurants in Shibuya with gluten free options.

DINNER OPTIONS FOR FAMILIES IN SHIBUYA
Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Sukiyaki & Shabu-Shabu

This hot-pot style of eating is so much fun for families and just interactive with kids.  This restaurant Syabu-yo is a chain restaurant. Syabu-Yo Shibuya Eki Mae Branch is in a building right on Shibuya Crossing. Diners choose the amount of time they would like to have unlimited meat brought to their table (usually 60 or 90 mins) and that price also includes access to a salad and vegetable buffet and ice-cream.  The instructions on how to make your meal at the table are here on the Syabu-Yo website but the staff will also help you.   My kids prefer sukiyaki to shabu-shabu as it is so sweet and more-ish. This style of restaurant is tricky if everyone has different dietary requirements (for example if one family member is vegetarian etc) as all the food is cooked in one pot. I guess you could get around this by getting two tables with two separate pots. Sometimes they have pots like the one pictured below that has two sections. This is mostly so you can cook two different flavours but it could also work for a meat side and a veg side too, I guess To eat here I would budget for around 3000 yen per adult.   The entire restaurant is non-smoking. Syabu-Yo accept most major credit cards. If you like this restaurant – I’m pretty sure you will! Then you are in luck as you can always google your closest Syabu-Yo branch as they are all over Japan. They have free wifi. There is a change table in the bathroom at this restaurant.   They also have the little robots that bring the meat to your table. My kids love this! To get here, take the Hachiko Exit of Shibuya Station.    It’s on the 9th floor of a building on Shibuya Crossing the same building as the Loccitane Store and Cafe Gust. There is an elevator.   This restaurant is open every single day of the year.   Best to have your hotel make a reservation on your behalf (unless you plan on trying your luck by walking in – warning that weekends and holidays this can be a popular spot for teens and tourists) or you can try via the Hot Pepper website here but you need to use google translate.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Build your own salad
Inside the Shibuya Scramble Square complex (connected to Shibuya Station)  is Crisp Salad Works. If you’d like to eat an early dinner with kids near Shibuya Crossing and like the kind of cozy restaurant where you’ll be dining with the locals… I recommend Kaikaiya by the Sea.   The food is Japanese fusion and mostly based around seafood.  Here is the Kaikaiya by the Sea menu.  Please note that kids are welcome to dine here but ONLY until 6pm. The entire restaurant is non-smoking.  This restaurant accepts most major credit cards.  I highly recommend making a reservation. This place is tooooo good to miss out on.  With advance warning, Kaikaiya by the Sea can also accommodate gluten free diners- they can even do the 9 dish tasting menu gluten free (and that includes wagyu beef and prawns and they also have gluten free soy sauce.)

Family-friendly Japanese Hamburger Steaks in Shibuya
Yamamoto no Hamburg Shibuya Shokudo
This restaurant welcomes kids and has the cutest kid’s plate. It is 3 mins walk from Shibuya Station. Budget 1100 yen per adult for a meal here. See the full menu for Yamamoto no Hamburg Steak here. They accept most major credit cards. This is a walk-in only hamburger steak spot (no reservations.) The restaurants seats 23 people ( a mixture of table and counter seating.) The entire venue is non-smoking. They have different types of hamburg steaks and then you choose your own toppings such as fried egg, bacon, melted cheese etc. Side dishes include fried chicken, sausages, a few small salads etc. They have lots of soft drinks and alcoholic drinks and they also do their own blended vegetable juice.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya : Wagyu Ramen in Shibuya
Wagyu Ramen Goku is 5 mins walk from Shibuya Station and they use beef and beef broth (quite unusual as most ramen places use pork.) They welcome children – however, as they don’t accept reservations, I do recommend going outside of traditional lunch or dinner hours to avoid a queue. As I say with all of my ramen recommendations, please please please be careful when dining with big bowls of hot liquid around babies and toddlers (maybe have a think about if this is really the right age or not to take them somewhere like this as the counters aren’t that big and the ramen is hot.) Budget 2000 yen per person to dine here. They accept most major credit cards. They have an English menu.

Omakase Sushi in Shibuya: Sushi Hicho
Sushi Hicho is just so so beautiful. They do allow children but the restaurant is small (only seats 24) so, for me, I would only feel comfortable bringing a sleeping baby in a stroller or carrier or a child old enough to sit quietly and eat and enjoy the sushi and sashimi. Please budget 8000 yen per person at lunch time and more like 15,000 yen for dinner. They accept most major credit cards. See the full menu at Sushi Hicho here. This is a non-smoking restaurant. As with all high end sushi restaurants, customers are asked to not wear any perfume or cologne. Make a reservation online for Sushi Hicho here. This restaurant is a 1 min walk from Shin-Minami Exit of Shibuya Station.
Please note : OMAKASE IS NOT FOR FUSSY / PICKY EATERS.
OMAKASE SUSHI IS FINE DINING AND THE CHEF CHOOSES THE MENU. THAT MEANS YOU WILL LIKELY GET SUSHI ITEMS LIKE FISH EGGS, SQUID, FISH SPERM, SEA URCHIN ETC. YOU CANNOT CHOOSE WHAT YOU DO AND DON’T LIKE. THAT IS OMAKASE. IT MEANS THE CHEF CHOOSES.
You don’t have to eat everything on your plate*. You don’t even have to try everything. You are the customer. But you don’t get to choose the menu.
*Japanese people do dislike food wastage (don’t we all?!) and so I recommend at least trying each dish OR if you are not the type to want to try lots of new and wonderful delicacies – then I don’t think omakase style is the best choice for you. Go for a restaurant where you order the dishes you want to eat (a la carte or tanpin as it’s called in Japan.)
Here are a whole lot of my personal tips on dining etiquette in Japan.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Vegetarian Indian Restaurant with an All-You-Can-Eat Lunch buffet
2 mins walk from Shibuya Station (take the Hachikoen Exit) is Milan Nataraj – an all vegetarian indian restaurant and they are known for the all-you-can-eat lunch buffet for under 2000 yen. This restaurant is also popular with those looking for Halal dining options. The food is really good here.   Some seats at this restaurant have a power point you can use to charge your devices while you dine.   This restaurant has free wifi. The naan here is vegan. Items with dairy are clearly labelled.  All allergens such as flour, milk, nuts, eggs and soy are all labelled clearly, actually.  Almost always – 3 of 4 of their curries are vegan here. This restaurant accepts most major credit cards for purchases of 1000 yen and higher.  I would budget for 1000 yen per person for lunch and more like 3000 yen at dinner.  This restaurant does accept reservations- click here to make a reservation at Milan Nataraj now. The entire restaurant is non-smoking.  There is a kids menu (which includes kids plates and cutlery)  and there is also place to store a stroller while you dine. (There is quite a nice view from the restaurant at night.)  Kids 2 and under can eat at the lunch buffet for free when dining with an adult and kids 3-9 years old are half the adult price.

I’ve written in detail here about how it is actually slightly harder to be vegetarian than vegan in Japan.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Standing Sushi Bar in Shibuya If you don’t have a stroller  (no room) and have kids old enough to stand still and be reasonably quiet while they eat, you might want to pop into Uogashi Standing Sushi Bar in Shibuya. This is a walk-ins only restaurant.  It is non-smoking. And, as the name suggests, you stand while you eat.  Uogashi accept most major credit cards.  It is just one minute walk from Shibuya Crossing.  It’s not a Michelin star restaurant by any means, but it is a great place to try some new kinds of sushi and sashimi without breaking the bank.  I would budget for about 1000 yen per person for a meal here or half that if you just want to try a few things.

It’s a great spot for bigger kids to try their Japanese skills actually as the chef is right in front of them .  They can try “Ebi kudasai” (Prawn, please.) “Aburi Toro Salmon kudasai” (flame-seared salmon sushi please) Parents can also try out some sake! This place is small so it would be hard to dine here with more than 3-4 people and still remain all together.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  An all you can eat Sukiyaki and Shabu Shabu option in Shibuya with kids
Momo Paradise
used to be one of the Nabezo restaurants in Shibuya and has since switched hands. This is fantastic place to come and eat A5  Rank Wagyu (or not if you’d like to eat the non-branded kind of meat and save some money) and also a fabulous option if you all need some more veggies in your life! ( I speak about this a lot here but lots of families worry about getting enough fresh western style salads and veggies while in Japan and this is literally all you can eat veggies and salads! It’s amazing!)

All you can eat vegetables at Momo Paradise

When you enter the restaurant, the staff will guide you through the menu (they speak english here!). You choose your menu package – wagyu meat or local meat, pork or beef or pork AND beef ( I don’t eat meat but I still need to pay for it to dine here so I can access all of those yummy all you can eat veggies and tofu – side note: tofu in sukiyaki is heaven!)  and then you can go up to the veggie buffet to choose your veggies for the table.  They give everyone little paper aprons and little paper covers for bags etc too. The price for your meal also includes all you can drink soft drinks and juice, ice-cream, dumplings (to cook in the hot pot at your table) and unlimited steamed rice. We went on a weekday lunch time and were able to walk right in without a booking.   It was approx 2200 yen for me and 1700 yen for my kids (less if your kids are younger than 7.) *Please note that Wagyu is, of course, extra.  My kids love sukiyaki more than shabu shabu because it’s sweeter.  They also love doing the “cooking.”

My personal sukiyaki chef!

All You Can Drink Soft Drink Bar at Momo Paradise

Ask the staff for lots of help if you’re not sure how to do it. You are also handed an instruction card. This restaurant has high chairs but it is the type that don’t have a strap at the front so it’s probably better for toddlers than babies.

My kids perching themselves on the high chairs in the lobby outside the restaurant.

This restaurant accepts most major credit cards.  If your kids love this restaurant, there is another branch in Shinjuku and Asakusa. It is possible to make a reservation on the Momo Paradise website here. When you start cooking, they give you a cover for your bags and little aprons for everyone at the table.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Vegan and non-Vegan Gyoza
Tiger Gyoza Kaikan is 6 mins walk from the Hachiko Exit of JR Shibuya Station.   They accept most major credit cards. The entire hall is non-smoking.   This place is big and seats 80 people .  For dinner time I would budget around 3500 yen per adult and more like 2000 yen for lunch. If you are vegan, ask for their vegan menu.  This restaurant is super dooper casual so bring kids along and have fun. You can also order ramen and fried rice.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :   “Australian” Steak and Seafood
Hate to break the hearts of Americans that love the Outback Steakhouse – but it isn’t even a little bit “Australian” to me.  I am partial to a “bloomin’ onion” from here though. I really like it here – especially when dining with kids.  The portions are generous and it’s very kid friendly.  It is 5 mins walk from Shibuya Station.   They welcome children- they have a kids menu and space to store strollers while you dine.  Please note that a 10% service charge is added to your bill when you dine here.  They do accept most major credit cards. I recommend budgeting 2000 yen for an adult lunch meal and more like 4000 yen at dinner time. This restaurant is completely non-smoking. Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Izakaya
Just 3 mins walk from the Disney Store in Shibuya here (or 5 mins walk from Shibuya Station via the Hachiko Exit)  is a Japanese izakaya chain branch called Wan, Shibuya Spainzaka branch.  This is a fabulous place to experience a Japanese izakaya as a family without breaking the bank.   It is cheap and cheerful and won’t be the most fancy food you have in Japan but its easy and yummy (and the vibes are oh so Japanese izakaya!)  Families are welcome here with kiddies.  Best to get your hotel to make a reservation.  They accept most major credit cards.  Please note that there is a service charge of 500 yen to dine here.  When dining here I would budget for approx 2500 yen per adult.   They have an English menu here.  The entire venue is non-smoking. See here for some pictures of menu options at Wan here.  My family like menu options like gyoza, garlic shrimp, fried chicken, Japanese style caesar side salad, chicken tsukune meatballs with cheese inside, edamame, sashimi…. there are also two kid’s menu plates (under 600 yen) : one is a pasta and one is a plate with some fries, fried rice, a small sausage and a chicken nugget.    Like most izakayas in Japan, the idea is that you order lots of little dishes for the table and order more of the same or new items as you go. For the grownups, they also have a happy hour between 5-7pm and most alcoholic drinks are less than 300 yen. This is a shoes-off restaurant so make sure you have matching socks on and easy shoes to take on and off (I recommend considering these things when packing for Japan.) If you have shoes without socks, best to have some little socks or sockettes in your bag.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Taco Bell, Panda Express & McDonalds I
f kids need a stretch and a play while in Shibuya, also not too far from the Disney store is Miyashita Park. Go to the rooftop for rock climbing and lots of open space to play!   The complex is also a shopping centre and their food court has opens such as Panda Express and Taco Bell too (and McDonalds.)

Taco Bell within Miyashita Park, Shibuya.

McDonalds Miyashita Park

Panda Express in Miyashita Park.

Did you know that instead of fries at McDonald’s you can order a side of edamame and corn. My daughter LOVES it!  A reader of my blog also gave me such an amazing suggestion – you can order a McDonald’s side salad and mix it with the edamame and corn to make a slightly heartier salad for under 600 yen!

Edamame & Corn from McDonalds in Japan

*side note: McDonald’s fries are not vegetarian/vegan – they are fried in beef fat.  There are often pop-up character cafes here – for example we visited when they had a Sponge Bob Pop-Up Cafe (like most character cafes in Japan the food tastes like playdoh but the novelty part is fun.) The bathrooms here are lovely and new so go to the toilets here and change nappies here! The toilets here also have those really handy baby seats for while parents are sitting on the toilet- they really should be everywhere.

An example of the baby seat in the toilets.

Not far from Miyashita Park and All Day Place Shibuya Hotel is a family-friendly Italian restaurant called Goo Italiano. This restaurant is 5 mins walk from Shibuya Station. They accept most major credit cards. I recommend budgeting for approx 2000 yen per adult at lunch time and more like 4500 yen for dinner. The entire restaurant is non-smoking. This restaurant isn’t great at making menu alterations so it’s easier to just order as is written on the menu.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :   All you can eat sukiyaki, shabu-shabu, veggies, ice-cream and soft drink
For lunch or dinner in Shibuya I highly recommend eating at Momo Paradise Shibuya Koen Dori.  This is a sukiyaki and shabu shabu all you can eat restaurant. It is great with kids as they can “cook” the meal at the table and also decide what ingredients they would like to eat. The restaurant also has all you can eat rice, salad, meat, veggies and ice-cream! It is located inside of the same building as the Disney Store, on the 8th floor (5 mins walk from the Hachiko Exit of Shibuya Station.) I would budget 4000 yen per adult for a meal here.   They accept most major credit cards.   The entire restaurant is non-smoking and they have free wifi. They have an English menu. They welcome families with children and also have space to store strollers while you eat.
This is a good option if you are gluten free too as you can have split broth bowls and the gluten free dinner can have their own clear broth.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :   Fish for your own dinner For an interesting lunch or dinner? How about using some of your Shibuya with kids time to going fishing in a restaurant?  This place is not far from the Disney Store. It is best to make a reservation but you could always try a walk in. Melissa Bertling wrote a great post here on this place: Zauo : the restaurant chain where you can fish for your meal UNFORTUNATELY – SINCE THE TOURIST BOOM – THE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT THIS RESTAURANT IS NO LONGER OF A JAPANESE STANDARD. SO DISAPPOINTING.

Please see my article here on how to go about making a reservation for a restaurant in Japan when the website doesn’t have an English website option.  Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :    Not technically a restaurant but you can eat while you karaoke! While taking your time in Shibuya with kids, I highly highly recommend renting a karaoke box (booth) for just your family. SEE HERE FOR STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS ON TAKING KIDS OUT TO KARAOKE IN JAPAN. Just across the road from Tower Records is the BEST karaoke box set up I’ve ever seen!!   I’ve written in detail about this place – Rainbow Karaoke Shibuya here.  You could even do this for a mealtime as they bring the food to your room and you can even order a bottomless drink option.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :   Sushi train
Just halfway up the hill from the crossing is Uobei Sushi Restaurant.   Turn right down an alley after Mos Burger and it’s on your right.  This place is such a fun place to take children as all orders are made on an ipad with pictures and then the orders come zooming down a conveyor-belt and stop right in front of your seat.   This is a fantastic place to try different kinds of sushi for the first time but it’s also great for fussy eaters as it’s also possible to order fries, noodles, ice-cream and fried chicken. You could even try a weird and wonderful sushi hybrid “cheeseburger sushi roll.”  All dishes are around 100-200 yen each so it’s actually really difficult to spend too much money. It’s not posh and the food isn’t going to be awarded a Michelin star anytime soon – but it’s such a fun way to dine. *For adults only* Why not try a Japanese mixed drink called a Lemon Sour or a Lemon Chu-Hai ?  Kanpaii ! (Cheers!) On the ipad to order, you can click on a button to request gluten free soy sauce. It’s not possible to reserve a table so just tell the staff how many people and wait for your spot to open up.  Customer turnover is really high so the wait has never been longer than 10 minutes for us before.

They also have highchairs for babies.  How cute is my niece – out for lunch!

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Tacobell On the same side street as Uobei is a Taco Bell, by the way. Open 11am-11pm (open from 1oam on weekends.)   There is another Taco Bell at Miyashita Park in Shibuya.  They are also on UberEats. There is free wifi instore.

Sorry for my blurry pic. This does give you a rough idea of prices at Taco Bell Japan though. For all the prices and pictures see the Taco Bell Japan website here.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :   Ramen (with gluten free options)
Another option just minutes from Shibuya for lunch or dinner is Shimbu Sakiya Ramen – especially if someone in your family needs gluten free food. This is a casual hole in the wall ramen place – so don’t expect fancy , ok?  They do not have vegan or vegetarian options but they do have gluten-free ramen made of brown rice noodles. This place is also well-known for having incredibly yummy karage (Japanese fried chicken.) Sorry to be a broken record on this blog but I honestly don’t recommend taking babies and toddlers to ramen shops. There isn’t space to keep them safe in terms of keeping little hands out of boiling soup broth.    But for school aged kids – it can be fun (& yummy).  If your kids don’t like ramen then there are also fried chicken rice bowls. The chicken is also gluten free and it’s 2 pieces for approx 300 yen. The gluten free meals are marked clearly on the ordering vending machine outside. This ramen shop is cash or Suica card only.  Completely non-smoking.   This Shibuya ramen shop is 4-5 mins walk from Shibuya Crossing.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :    Italian Fusion Izakaya (with gluten free options)
Another restaurant that is just near Shimbu Sakiya Ramen is an Italian fusion izakaya/wine bar called Gabulicious. They welcome children and babies.  The cheesecake here and the risotto is gluten free !  It is 5 mins walk from the Hachiko Exit of Shibuya Station.  They have a “10 vegetable salad with achovy dressing”, fries, plates or cheese or cheese fondue and also margherita pizza.   I recommend budgeting for 4000 yen per meal per adult to dine here (that amount includes drinks.) They accept most major credit cards.   Please note that there is a 400 yen per head service charge (to say thank you, you will receive an otoshi appetizer when you sit down – if you don’t want to eat it – that’s fine- just leave it sitting on the table. ). This is a non-smoking restaurant with the exception of smoking allowed on the second floor terrace.  This restaurant has free wifi.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Ramen (for kids 10+)
I don’t recommend this spot for small kids but if you are travelling with kids who are 10+ or are teens, I recommend visiting a ramen restaurant called Ore Ryu Shio Ramen.  Shio Ramen means “salt ramen” – as the ramen stock/soup is quiet simple and mild.  The tables are filled with different condiments – you can make your ramen spicy or garlic-y or sweeter etc. First thing to do is try the broth and then add as you go.   A bowl of ramen here will cost a little under 2000 yen.   They sell ramen and tsukemen here. There is also fried chicken and gyoza on the menu here.  This is a walk-in restaurant only (no reservations.)  Cash only.
They have an English and Japanese menu. See here for instructions on how they recommend you add the condiments and flavours to your ramen.  The restaurant is 8 mins walk from Shibuya Station (it’s a bit of a walk up the hill but it will take 8 mins.)  This is a non-smoking restaurant.

Oreryu Shio Ramen. This is a karaage (fried chicken rice bowl), miso ramen and Tokotsu ramen.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya : Shabu Shabu If you are keen on a good quality Kobe Beef and Matsuzaka beef lunch, I recommend making a reservation for Shabu Shabu Tsukada in Shibuya Scramble (the same building as Shibuya Sky.)   It’s a bit of a fancy restaurant but they do welcome kids.  Tsukada serve shabu shabu and sukiyaki, made in a hot pot at your own table.  I recommend budgeting for 3000 yen for lunch or 8000 yen per person for dinner.  This restaurant is entirely non-smoking and accepts most major credit cards.  They have an English menu and also offer a vegetarian menu.   This restaurant has space for strollers.  No kids menu (school aged children are expected to order a meal/ lunch set )  There is no dress code but diners are asked to not wear strongly scented perfume. Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya : Teppanyaki/Wagyu Steak (kids who are 6+)
Or perhaps you would like to eat some Teppanyaki Wagyu for lunch (or dinner)? *Please note that this restaurant only accepts children who are 6 years old and older and children will need to also order an adult sized course* This restaurant is called Ginza no Steak Shibuya Branch (it comes up Ginza Steak Shibuya on google maps.) This is an all you can eat steak restaurant.  They can accommodate gluten free customers but please ask which appetizers are gluten free as you order (and they are happy to change the dessert to fruit, if you need.)  Steaks arrive without sauce so you can add your own sauces and seasonings (or avoid sauces completely if you have allergies.) Just a little warning that teppanyaki may be different to teppanyaki you are used to at home so you might want to read this before making a reservation.  Budget for lunch is approximately 9000 yen per adult. Budget for dinner is approximately 15,000 yen per adult. Please note that there is a service charge of 10% added to the bill and also a seating charge of 300 yen per person. The entire restaurant is non-smoking.   There is an English menu. Ginza Steak accepts most major credit cards.  Reservations required. Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Basement delicatessen style food hall
For something different, go to Hikarie department store in Shibuya.  The basement B2 floor inside the Hikarie Department Store contains a  Gourmet Food Hall which is so incredible and colourful for take home lunches and dinners.

One floor below that, B3, has a Gourmet Supermarket level too ( this is still less than 3 minutes walk from the Hachiko Exit of Shibuya Station).  There are some truly magnificent take out Japanese home cooking options.  There are a few small tables here but best to take your newly purchased goodies back to your hotel.

Extra tip: While you are near Hikarie department store, if you need to charge your phone, go to the Bic Camera Shibuya Higashiguchi Store ( Higashiguchi = the east entrance store), the address is 1-24-12 Shibuya. On the Ground floor of the Annex ( 別館)is a charging station.   30 mins of express charging is 100 yen.  Instructions are in English and Chinese.
While at Bic Camera… you may like to check out the Nintendo Amiibo selection
I must admit that I know NOTHING about Amiibo. However, my son always tells me that the Amibo selection in Japan is way better than other countries. If you are amiibo “shopping” then I recommend first going to your closest Yodobashi Camera or Bic Camera. Toys R Us Japan also has a good selection of Amiibo.

Amiibo sold in Japan. Look for Amiibo in Yodobashi Camera or Bic Camera – also Toys R Us Japan.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya : an izakaya with a view that also welcomes children
Washoku En Toki no Toki Izakaya.
This is inside the Shibuya Hikarie building.
Like most izakaya in Japan, the idea is that you order lots of little dishes and try lots of little things and then order more as you go, if you wanted to.   This is a wonderful place for adults to try Japanese sake (hot and cold) or lemon sours etc while still dining as a family.   I recommend budgeting for 2000 yen per adult here at lunch time and more like 5000 yen at dinner time. The entire restaurant is non-smoking and they do accept most major credit cards. You can ask you hotel to make a reservation for you or you could try for a walk-in (I only recommend attempting this before 7pm.) The view here at night is really special (oh-so very Tokyo.) Shibuya Station is connected to the Shibuya Hikarie building so, if coming by train, follow the signs within the station.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Vegetable Skewers and Oden
If it’s mealtime while you’re at Shibuya Hikarie, I recommend eating at Japanese Izakaya “Vegetable Skewers Creative Oden Nurukan Sato” on the 7th floor. Oden is hot pot dish cooked mostly in winter. I’d describe it as winter vegetables (mostly root veg and some konyakku) bubbling away in an almost clear fish based broth.  Other options as well as oden are : agedashi tofu with anzu beans,  sashimi plates of 3 or 5 different types of sashimi, fried oysters, mozzarella and wild duck caprese, karaage (japanese fried chicken), potato salad, …. skewer options include eringi mushrooms wrapped in pork, zucchini with camembert, asparagus wrapped in pork、shiitake mushrooms and mentaiko…  You can see pictures of this izakaya and some of the menu options on their instagram here.  Like almost all izakaya in Japan, the dishes are small and are meant to be shared. You order a few for the table and then keep ordering more of what you like or other dishes you would like to try. (The exception is at lunchtime at this restaurant as they have a teishoku menu – a menu where every person orders one dish and it comes with some set side dishes.)  This restaurant does accept reservations or you can walk-in. They welcome families and have space to store a stroller while you dine.  They also have some high chairs. For lunch here I recommend budgeting around 1500 yen per adult. At dinner time more like 4500 yen.  This restaurant has an english menu and they accept most major credit cards.

*I don’t usually write to say “don’t do this” (because I just leave out the places that I don’t love – but I do feel that it’s important to share that I DON’T recommend the Disney Harvest Cafe inside the Shibuya Hikarie building. From the outside it looks like a dream but the food is expensive and tastes so so so bad.*. The gift store here is cute though.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Spanish/Italian
If you’re looking for a bit more a fancy sit down lunch in Shibuya, I recommend making a reservation at The Rigoletto in Shibuya. The cuisine is Spanish-Italian.  They do welcome children but don’t (of course!) welcome outside food.  Also, they have limited seating areas for families with kids under 6 years old so it is best to make a reservation to avoid missing out.   This restaurant is a bit of a “special celebration” kind of vibe so, if your kids aren’t great at staying in their seats for meal times it might be worth skipping until they are a bit bigger. You can see the entire The Rigoletto menu online here.  Something handy for families – they are happy to do “half & half” pizzas at all times except for during weekday lunchtime hours. The Rigoletto also have several vegan dishes and a gluten free fettuccini option. Please note that this restaurant charges a service charge of 440 yen per person for those who dine after 5pm everyday  (and 220 yen per person from opening until 5pm on weekends.) This restaurant is just 2 mins walk from Shibuya Station (via Exit B1).

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Sushi / Izakaya
**Note : the following restaurant isn’t exactly made for families but I would recommend it with a small baby or an older child who can sit still and quietly.  There are no high chairs and there are a few steps up to the elevator. I don’t recommend taking kids here for dinner**
I love this little lunch spot called Kinka in Shibuya.  It’s about 5 minutes walk from the crossing and is very close to the Disney Koen Dori Shibuya store. Kinka is  small and modern and friendly.  They have an English menu and this plate of sushi below cost me 990 yen!! If completely raw sushi creeps you out, they also have a blow-torched broiled version which is also really yummy. Reservations are possible. The entire restaurant is non-smoking. Sushi omakase lunch sets start at 1200 yen. At dinner time, there are four different omakase sushi courses to choose from that range in price from 2200 yen to 4900 yen. You can see the full Kinka Sushi menu here.  I have more pictures and information about Kinka Sushi in a blog post here.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Sushi Train If you’re looking for a sushi train lunch there is also Kura Sushi sushi train restaurant (it’s a chain so they are in most of major spots in Japan) just 1 minute walk from Shibuya 109.  This place is completely automated . No Japanese language skills required whatsoever. It is a non-smoking restaurant and accepts most major credit cards.  This is the  Kurasushi Shibuya menu.  I’d expect to pay approx 1500 yen per adult for a decent meal.  They are open 11am-11pm daily.  Kurasushi have a list of all of their food with common allergens here. (Kurasushi is great when dining with kids and there are lots of cooked non-raw sushi options but if you really love sushi you may be a little disappointed with the raw-fish quality / some have found that the fish meat is a bit frozen in the middle.  See here for my tips on what to do in Japan if your kids like to eat westernized versions of sushi or california rolls etc.)
For sushi train options in Japan – Kura Sushi definitely has the most gluten free options (you can even put a filter on the ipad menu to see what is an option for you.)

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Japanese Curry House
If you’re craving Japanese curry, just 4 mins walk from the Shibuya Stream complex is a branch of the well known Japanese curry branch Cocoichibanya .  This branch is called Cocoichibanya Shibuya Namikibashi (for when you pop it into google.)   Last time I checked this branch also has gluten free AND vegan options too ( customers can choose their own curry toppings such as chicken Katsu or veggies such as spinach.) Japanese curry to me is more like a stew or casserole than a curry -but, regardless, customers here can all choose their spice level from 1 -1o. To dine here, I would budget for 1500 yen per adult.  Just to manage expectations this place is super super casual.  No need to worry about noisy kids here.  Cocoichibanya branches all accept most major credit cards. The entire restaurant is non-smoking. The place is small but it’s not an eat and linger type of place so I would just wait outside until seats open up OR get takeout!  This branch also has a children’s menu and offers curry udon as part of their menu.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Okonomiyaki
If you’re looking to try some okonomiyaki for dinner ( also open for lunch too, actually)  then I recommend wandering into the very casual but always bustling pub/restaurant Kotegaeshi.    It is only a few minutes walk from Shibuya Crossing.  It is on the fifth floor but there is a small elevator. Okonomiyaki is like a Japanese omelette and you choose the fillings such as meats or seafood or vegetables. An adult lunch will be approximately 1000-2000 yen and dinner more like 2000 yen. Other popular options to eat include yakisoba, which is noodles cooked on the hot plate in front of you. Foods cooked in front of you are really good for fussy eaters or those with an allergy as you can say no to an ingredient before it is added.   It’s very visual and it’s fun for kids to get involved. Read here for how to order a vegetarian version of okonomiyaki This restaurant is very casual. You will be sitting with students who are chilling after university or business teams heading out for a meal after work. These kinds of meals are meant to be shared but you can order your own if you prefer. This restaurant does accept credit cards. They do have an English menu. Please note that this restaurant is not a non-smoking restaurant so you will need to choose your table carefully – another way to avoid a smokey restaurant is to dine early with kids – for example a 5pm dinner.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  A mix of different casual Japanese food options
Another child-friendly, smoke-free option is Gonpachi in Shibuya, up the hill from the famous crossing ( walk up Dogenzaka Road, past Hooters, past KFC).  This Gonpachi isn’t as famous as the Nishi-Azabu branch ( often referred to as the Kill Bill Restaurant and I talk about it here) but it is just as English friendly and offers a beautiful view of the city as it is on the 14th floor. It is also possible to reserve a private room with horigotatsu style seating ( that means it looks like you’re kneeling at the table but the seat is actually dug out at floor level.) A private room is great if baby or toddler is likely to want to move around and play for the meal.  Food options include sushi, soba noodles, yakitori, tempura etc. Their entire menu is here. They don’t mind if you bring your own baby food. They do have high chairs.  The entire restaurant is non-smoking. Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Salads, Soups, Tapas style dishes, Vegetable laden dishes.
For a delicious farm-to-table restaurant, I recommend We are the Farm in Shibuya. It is 10 minutes walk from Shibuya Crossing.  .  Lunch is especially good value but the dinner is also amazing. The lunch course  at this Farm-to-Table restaurant includes soup & a kale side salad and you can choose your own main :  a vegetable gratin, a “choose your own ingredients salad” or a grilled vegetable platter (see pictures below)  for 1500 yen. The entire restaurant is non-smoking. They also are happy for diners to bring strollers inside. They also have beer made with Kale if you’re feeling game…. let me know if it’s any good?

I especially love their lunch salad buffet (although they might not like me visiting as I just keep eating and eating.)

My husband and I go here for date nights often and, I know it sounds weird to say but, this simple marinated onion served with rock salt was to die for! We both love their ‘Chunky Veg’ gratin and the plate of all the amazing Japanese varieties of mushrooms was one of my favourites. The only negative thing I have to say about this place is that I haven’t found any yummy alcoholic drinks there yet – but I rarely have success with organic wine. Perhaps its those chemicals that make wine taste so yummy???!!!

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Wagyu Beef/Yakiniku
If you would like to eat some good quality Wagyu beef then how about having yakiniku for dinner? BeBu-Ya Yakiniku welcome children and babies – they even have storage spots available for strollers.  This yakiniku restaurant is 8 mins walk from Shibuya Station. I recommend making a reservation. I would budget approximately 4000 yen per adult when you dine here.  You cook the meat at the grill at your own table so it’s really fun and interactive when eating with kids. This restaurant accepts most major credit cards.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Kushikatsu
For something casual and vibey, Kushikatsu Arata is a fantastic option.  This is a chain of Japanese style lightly battered, fried and skewered meat and vegetables.   There are also lots of seafood options.  It is located in the Parco Department Store, not far from Shibuya Crossing. I love the vibe in here. The decor is fun and retro with Japanese decor and posters. I find this kind of way to eat to be easy when you have vegetarian diners with you as all ingredients can be ordered, on skewers, on their own. It is possible to reserve a table here but, personally, if its just seats for two? I’d just try my luck. Unfortunately, it is not a non-smoking restaurant – I’ve never found it to be too bad but I also want to let you know, incase this is a deal breaker for you.) They do accept most major credit cards.

Also in the Shibuya PARCO complex is a vegan izakaya (Japanese style casual pub

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :   Ramen (with vegan options)
And one more vegan friendly option within Shibuya Parco basement is Jikasei Mensho,  ramen spot.    This is not a vegan restaurant but they do serve 4 types of vegan ramen – one of them is spicy ramen. On the flip side of vegan options, they also serve Wagyu Ramen. Sometimes you need to wait to dine here but it most definitely worth it if you are vegan.
The spicy miso ramen is incredible and the Tan Tan Men is also so good.
Please note that this restaurant only accepts cash.  Jikasei Mensho do not accept reservations.  They do take most major credit cards.  They do not accept cash. Budget for an adult dining here? Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :   Pub/Izakaya If you want a bit of a fun dinner in this area. I recommend visiting Shibuya Zetton – this is a western style pub that prides itself on being a pub that meets an Japanese izakaya.  The food is all Japanese fusion but the interior is a bit like an American Sports Bar.  I recommend ordering the Thai curry spring rolls, secret recipe fried chicken wings, garlic shrimp, shrimp tempura, wagyu sukiyaki bowl.    See the full Shibuya Zetton menu here. Children are welcome here.  Shibuya Zetton accept most major credit cards (they don’t accept cash at all.)   Please note that there is a 500 yen service charge per person when you dine or drink here (and to say thank you – you wifll be given an ootoshi -a small appetizer –  I explain about that here in my Japan dining etiquette tips) .  The entire venue is non-smoking.  You can make a reservation here for Shibuya Zetton via  Tablecheck..  This restaurant/pub is 4 mins walk from Shibuya Station.

Family-friendly restaurant in Shibuya :  Omakase Sushi
10 mins walk from Shibuya is Sushi Kourin. This is fine-dining omakase sushi. Please remember to not wear perfume and cologne.   They welcome children and babies. I don’t recommend bringing children who can’t stay seated for the full meal. They also have space for strollers (you need to let them know that you will have a stroller with you when you make the reservation.)     I recommend budgeting for 15,000 yen per adult. There is a service charge of 530 yen per person (they will provide you with an ootoshi appetizer when you sit down – if. you don’t want to eat it – just leave it on your counter/table.)   They accept most major credit cards.  This restaurant only seats 11 people.
Book using this ByFood link now if you have allergies or want to choose your exact course ahead of time. You can tell them exactly what you can and can’t eat and order your exact course online. This is also a great option if you’re worried about any language problems while in the restaurant – it can all be done in English ahead of time.
